Thoughts on MMORPGs - PC or Console?

Tried playing EQ recently on PC - HATED it. Friend has it on PS2 and he actually seems to make, you know, progress, whereas my PC version just stands there (and dies). I was surprised because it seems like with MMOs, its easier to talk (and not die) with a keyboard than with foofy little controllers. So I have a few questions:

1 - Is the medium important to gameplay?
2 - Do you play at all? (Yes, I know half the board plays SW:G)
3 - How do people on Consoles EVER engage in the specific community-style experiences that seem to be available on PC-style MMOs?

Though PCs have a huge choics of MMORPGs. I'd say most are lacking and that is communication, just as you said.

I literally have to stop what I'm doing and type in a message. Thus allowing myself to be killed. Some games like Tribes have built in voice, which gets rid of this major problem. Most games do not have voice chat and you usally have to use a third party voice chat program and not everyone will have that who's playing the game.

Some games address this issue with an integrated messaging system. A few quick key strokes and bam! You have a nice command that everyone hears and can work with you. IE: BattleField 1942 and Castle Wolfenstien. Though these are effective in combat and in the midst of action, they can be somewhat clumsy.

Now, Consoles coming the the MMORPG world are realitively new, I've only had the fortune to use XBOX. Which already has integrated voice. If your playing a multiplayer game on the XBOX, odds are its got voice chat, and bye bye complex command system, hello fun.

I have a friend who is massively into Everquest Online Adventures (that's the PS2 one). I've watched it played a bit, but it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. You buy the network adapter, you buy the keyboard, you buy the game, you buy the monthly fee. Until the Final Fantasy MMORPG hits, there is no marriage between console and PC so there is a kind of rift between the two. The EQOA community thinks their game is far superior to the PC version, and they're probably right considering how old EQ is now. EQ2 will come out and the PC folk will put down EQOA even more than they do now.
I dunno, these things just make more sense on PC to me. I guess I'm just stuck in that old mode from playing MUDs and Meridian 59 back in the day.

A-Pathetic: I have to agree with you, I was just curious, due to the Everquest Online Adventures thing, I geuss I thought it was the same as EQ and that there were more.

Interesting.

My only real problem with this, and I've been exposed to all the TeamSpeak stuff thanks to Planetside, is that once somebody is allowed to speak non-stop you often find them grating on your nerves. While the time it takes to type may turn some people away from communicating, I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. I find myself in games with both young and immature people and the fun level decreases for me substantially. When you only have typing it's basically a matter of ignoring the l33t speakers and focusing on everybody else.

You can mute certain players.

Oh crap. Walked away and forgot what I was going to say.

I dont' like the idea of voice-talk. Maybe I'm an oldie, but Internerd = typing.

The main thing keeping me from trying these is the monthly fee. I'd love to play Planetside, but 15$ a month? No. I really want to play World Of Warcraft when it comes out, but that will likely be $15 a month as well.

If it was something like 5-7$ a month, and I could actually TRY the game before I bought it (they should set up an isolated demo server) I would be more inclined.

Yeah, but when you think about it - its basically paying them to develop new content, etc. There's a BILLION THINGS that one has to pay for. Not to mention, you know, basically running what amounts to an ISP with reactive content and whiney bitchy gamers.

money. dammit. why do they want mine?

I have quake and diablo to blame for the fact that I believe strongly that I shouldn't have to pay for online goodness. That and I'm just an anti-social motherf...

Right now there isn't anything out there content wise to lure me to upload my credit card info. The adventures found in EQO, Ultima, Planetside, etc...could easily be found in single player games. Even Galaxies doesn't interest me despite KOTOR making me excited about Star Wars again.

Honestly though, I don't even have time to invest in online mmorpgs, which is my first real excuse for not going online despite having a zippy broadband connection. Money being the second reason.

If a game were to come out that were a mmorpg. I'd hope it was for the x-box, with voice support, as intuitive to play as KOTOR, but as free form as Morrowind...yet avoided the cliched dark ages/fantasy crap that's everywhere. Give me an Old Western rpg. Or something.

I think time is a big factor. The reason I'm asking, of course, is that I came across a really good site for the *academic* discussion of MMORPGs that I found really interesting. Amazingly enough, its sounds like the majority of players are in their late 20s - early 40s - people with kids who use it as recreation.

For about a month and a half Planetside gave you the ability to download their game and play it (full version) for free for 7 days. Once your 7 days was up, you had the ability to just repeat the process. Basically you could have played for 6 weeks for free. Of course, that just ended a little over a week ago.
You also figure that you get a free month when you first buy the game, that's standard with any of these MM games. You can grab Planetside for ~$20 right now on Ebay, free month included. I grabbed SWG off Ebay for $30 about a week after it came out. Even if I end up not especially caring for a game I'm willing to pay $20-$30 to try it out online for a month, it's not as if there are so many of these games coming out it might break me.

Right now, MMORPGs are better on the PC because console players do not yet know how to participate in a persistent online world. They are still a bit immature. I see this all the time as new people on Xbox Live try to distinguish themselves by saying the stupidest shit. Eventually though, this community WILL mature and it will be an excellent platform for MMORPGs.

I played PSO for xbox and found a good number of mature and serious gamers. It shows that consoles are capable of good ORPGS. They just need a little time for everyone to get more use to the concept.

So for the time being, PCs are still king for MMORPGs.

That's exactly what I'm thinking of.

As an aside, why don't *I* get to go to MIT and study this stuff?

For the PC, I recommend one of the following:

- Anarchy Online. Beautiful graphics, great community, great story.

- Dark Age of Camelot. Nice graphics, great tradeskills, wonderful high-end game.

SW:G could be great in the future, but not right now.
