Battlefield 1942

So now we have the demo.

My first impressions are that the game does indeed have a few bugs to work out but overall I am sincerly digging it.

I love the overall feel it conveys as it really is a massive tatic online game. I've been waiting for something like this for awhile.

At first I did not think I would like it what-so-ever but ended up quite enjoying what I was playing.
I can't wait to see all the levels and vehicles you can use.

Should be fun.

Not to mention the clan I belong to(funny how most members are over 25) has lined this up to be the next game over MOHAA.

I have a brand new computer, P4@2.24 ghz, 512meg ram, and a Geforce4 4600, and the damn demo keeps crashing to the desktop under WinXP.

Shame, too, 'cause it looks right up my alley.

And you ain't seen nuthin' 'till you've looked up my alley...

My GOD this game is good. I cannot wait to get the full version next month. I shot my wad when Medal of Honor came out for the pc. Now this? I'm going to die...

I saw a preview for this and I thought it looked great. Where did you get your demo?

Set your refresh rate to 60hz. It's a known issue mentioned in the readme.

Mine does that too (Godforsaken XP!!!)

Where is the refresh rate you are talking about? That in the video settings?

Yeah, I read about that, but wasn't into playing a multiplayer demo all that much, so I didn't bother. Just gonna wait for the full game and some reviews and maybe try again then...

This game is very, very cool - count me among the addicted. It's like Tribes without all the SUCK.

The vehicles make for excellent and frequent comedy, as your teammates slam into buildings, each other, battleships etc. The vehicles (well, at least the jeep) are about as fun and handle as well as the common cars in GTAIII, and the wise inclusion of alternate camera views is a REALLY refreshing decision on the designers' part.

The size of the demo map is really impressive and last night I was on a solid 32 vs 32 server with a 35ms ping, alternating between sniping as a scout and driving guys forward into enemy positions under extremely hairy, hilariously intense opposition fire from land, sea and air. It was as if Saving Private Ryan was a fast-paced slap-stick comedy on the level of Airplane! or something.

For those who can't appreciate a funny WWII experience, fuck right off please.

Good, good fun I'd highly recommend to any fan of war 'sims' like Medal of Honor or Return to Castle Wolfenstein, as well as those who can appreciate deep teamplay games like Tribes, Quake, CS etc.

Great shit and I will be buying this game for sure.

Yeah it's gone gold and should be out on Sept 10th and I am So. Fuckin. There.

I am a terrible, terrible pilot at this point, but my tail-gunner skills have improved alot. I too, love bailing out and launching my jeep like a rolling missle at tanks. I really wish the cars wouldn't blow up the moment they hit water, but I suppose it's a good way of keeping the vehicles from being lost at sea without respawning back at your base.

One frustration I do have is the network code: it's super impressive that it handles the amount of players, vehicles etc., but I really wish I could get an accurate reflection of my ping from the scoreboard. I suppose when the game is released there will be alot less people hosting servers on flakey DSL & cable connections and more servers on t1's and such.

Here's some good info - a hands-on preview by IGN covering a big BF-1942 press event where they got to see many more of the other maps, new weapons and equipment:

http://pc.ign.com/articles/368/368840p1.html

This is a damn good game, and after a patch or two that will clean up some annoying bugs it will kick serious ass. I highly recommend trying it if you have a decent pc rig and connection.

That's rad...

OK, big SPAM of the BF1942 Tips and Tricks section of the official site, which is located in a hard to find and terrible to navigate spot. Forgive the length, but it's big, and HIGHLY useful:

Land Vehicles
When driving the tank, take out foot soldiers with your co-axial machine gun
by clicking on your right mouse button. This allows you to fire the machine
gun without exposing yourself to return fire.

Damage takes armor and angle into account, so shoot tanks from the sides or
behind at a perpendicular (90 degree) angle to maximize inflicted damage.
But remember, shooting at the frontal armor will only cause minimum damage.

Artillery can fire further than any other vehicle. Use the increased range
to disrupt enemy movement from safe distances and use snipers to scout enemy
units.

Remember to use [C] or [F] keys to change views while in vehicles. Use them
to occasionally look behind you when in vehicles, especially tanks. Tanks
can be destroyed with one good shot from the rear.

The scout car can be used as a bomb if driven correctly. Just aim it at a
tank or other target and hit the accelerator. Don’t forget to jump out
before you hit. You can also run over infantry if you’re going fast enough.

The APC will heal and resupply you if you sit in the back.

Be careful driving over rough terrain, if you’re going too fast you can
damage your vehicle.

You can drive over landmines if you go slow enough. Of course you’re a
sitting duck while you navigate this way.

Air Vehicles
Zoom and Scoop -- This maneuver is for when you're in a dive-bomber and have
an empty backseat. Fly very, very close to a ground-based teammate. Have
your teammate hold down the enter vehicle key [E]. If your teammate is close
enough, they will pop into the rear seat of the bomber for a quick getaway.
This is really useful in CAPTURE THE FLAG games

Drop torpedoes from planes at a low altitude or they might go under the ship
you are targeting.

Use the [F9] key to toggle your plane's HUD (heads-up display) on/off. You
can fly planes with arrow keys (as default) instead of mouse.

If your plane is about to crash, hit [E] to eject and [9] to open your
parachute.

Planes are probably the deadliest vehicles in the game. They can blow up
tanks with one well-placed bomb. Create your own multiplayer game and
practice bombing vehicles. A good bomber is a valuable asset to any team.
Joysticks help A LOT when flying, try binding your yaw and throttle to the
keyboard, but leave the roll and pitch to the joystick. Remember to stay
away from the AA guns!

You can resupply your planes by flying slow and low over airfield/carrier
ammo sources. You’ll know you’re near one if the ammo icon appears on your
screen.

Airplanes are weakest in the engines... shoot for those in dogfights. Just a
few well-placed shots can turn your opponent into scrap metal.

Watch for AA (anti-aircraft) and machineguns... they can turn your plane
into swiss cheese. To avoid these, approach them from below their horizon
and drop a bomb on them as a wake-up call.

The B-17 is as slow as a pig... but it can lay a devastating carpet of bombs
on the ground. With two gunners to keep fighters off of you, this is a
potent weapon. Your gunners can also act as paratroopers.

Infantry
Short bursts produce higher accuracy than continuously holding the FIRE key.
Firing while standing still, crouching, or prone also helps with accuracy.

Pay attention to uniforms. When you first spawn, look at your teammates'
colors. Usually one team's clothes are darker than the other. Sometimes the
player tags don’t show up quickly, so pay attention. DON'T KILL YOUR
TEAMMATES!

When using the sniper rifle, hold the FIRE button down after you shoot to
stay in zoom mode. This will allow you to see how your shot fell. When you
release the FIRE button you will un-zoom and reload.

The scout can place cameras with the binoculars fire and the artillery
pieces and ships can cycle through those cameras with [ALT] + FIRE.

Right mouse click when you are on foot for a slightly magnified view.

Shots are not instantaneous; depending on the distance you may need to aim
in front of a moving target. Experiment to find the correct adjustment for
all your weapons.

You can throw grenades a short distance with [ALT] + FIRE.

Choose your kit wisely. Just because you like sniping doesn't mean your team
can survive without a medic.

Increase your grenade's distance by jumping when throwing. You can throw a
grenade about a block and a half by doing this.

Learn to use the environment as cover, hide behind trees/rocks/buildings and
don’t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes (you won’t give away your
position, and you’ll have a better chance of getting an easy kill).

Tanks are easily outflanked by fast moving foot soldiers. Always attack
tanks from the rear. Throwing grenades beneath the tank is also effective.

Land Mines are effective for closing off areas to tank and vehicle movement.
Remember to tell your teammates where you place them.

Watch your ammo and health: Grenades may be great for killing enemy
soldiers, but unless you're an anti-tank or engineer soldier, they're your
only weapons against enemy tanks. Remember to reload whenever you see an
ammo box and heal whenever you see a medical locker or APC.

Teamwork is your key to winning and getting a good score: Try working as an
anti-tank soldier or engineer with a friendly tank. As he distracts them in
the tank, you can get around them for the killer rear shot or plant some
dynamite. Afterwards, you can repair your ally. If quick travel is
necessary, he can give you a ride. Type a quick message about strategy, and
don't assume he heard it unless he responds.

In concentrated street battles often reloading is too slow. Try switching
kits [G] with the guy you just killed!

As a medic you can also heal yourself.

When in a firefight from a distance, STAY LOW. Go prone or keep moving.

Naval Units
You cannot command enemy ships. But you can steal the airplanes off of their
carrier.

Submarines go slower under the surface so drive long distances at surface
level and submerge when you spot a target.

The destroyer is your only means of sinking a submerged submarine... keep
them near high-priority targets to sniff out those sneaky submariners.

Watch for the submarine’s periscope. Use radio commands to notify your team
when you’ve seen it. That will give everyone a general idea of where it’s
located.

The pilot of the destroyer can drop depth charges with ALT+Fire. The gunner
in the rear turret can use the guns in indirect fire mode if a sniper calls
for artillery.

Watch for the shallow water. The bottom will rise abruptly as you approach
dry land. Try to avoid beaching your ships.

The battleship can use its guns in indirect fire mode if a sniper calls for
artillery.

Ships can take a lot of pounding... but just a few torpedoes will sink you.
Watch out for submarine and torpedo bombers.

All ships except the submarine have landing craft attached to them. These
can be used to make landing assaults.

The ramp on the landing craft is lowered/raised using the up/down arrow
keys.

Miscellaneous
Axis nametags are ALWAYS red and Allies are ALWAYS blue. Remember that.

You will see teammates in your minimap as the color of your current team:
BLUE for Ally and RED if you’re Axis.

Strategy. Don't just run, blaze away, and die. This isn't your standard
first-person shooter, and that will get you killed. Think, aim, move, fall
back, repair, get healed, and backup your teammates.

Man the shore batteries to keep the ships at bay.

Use 16-bit color for better framerates.

Experiment with your sound settings for a better framerate. Also see if you
can use hardware acceleration.

Don't win the fight but loose the battle. Remember to focus on control
points in Conquest.

Memorize and use the radio commands.

The direct route to an objective is rarely the safest; use alternate routes
to achieve goals. Be sure to watch the spawn interface when you are dead, be
prepared to click on a new spawn point if yours is lost, because you don't
want to wait for another spawn cycle.

Choose your spawn points wisely. Examine your map before spawning, look for
vehicles, and look for places that may be spawn-camped by the enemy. Do you
want to defend or attack? Where is the fighting concentrated? Do you want to
join the main battle or execute a backdoor strategy of your own?

Learn how to use all the weapons at your disposal effectively. Each hand
weapon and vehicle has strengths and weaknesses.

Try your best to respond to your teammates' radio commands. If you're an
anti-tank soldier and you hear a request for anti-tank support, look at your
minimap and see who's talking -- they’ll flash yellow.

If in a conquest game and the spawn point aren't changing flags, look around
for the enemy who might be nearby preventing it.

Keep your eyes open. Snipers, landmines, expacks, and artillery are silent
killers. ALWAYS look out for these.

Vary your class to fit the situation. If the enemy is not using tanks, don't
play an anti-tank all the time. If your team is mostly on foot, be a medic
and heal them. If your team is in tanks, be an engineer and fix them.
Supporters are every bit as important as attackers and defenders.

If you catch an enemy from behind at a distance, don't shoot right away --
you may miss and alert him to your presence. Close in a bit and make it a
sure thing.

Empty vehicles that are nearby will appear on your minimap as gray icons. If
one of these disappears abruptly, you know an enemy has jumped into it.

i'm pissed because i'll say "I'm just gonna have a quick game." and then, 2 hours and blurry vision later...

the wonderful chaos of games like this with 32 and 64 player war zones just make me more baffled how people can get into console "multiplayer" with just four people. maybe i just don't like hunting my prey all over a level

am i the only one who absolutely cannot fly a plane?

Halo circumvents that limitation nicely, Dave, hence the love for it.

As interesting as this game sounds, I don't know if I'm going to pick it up with UT 2003 seemingly right around the corner now that the demo is out.

I play Halo, Dead to Rights, and am barely touching NFL2K3 on the Xbox right now due to a lack of time.

If I start getting back into UT2003, and have GTA: Vice City and Smackdown 4 to look forward 1.5-2 months away, I just don't see where I coulkd possibly fit this game in.

Besides...when I want war simulations, nothing pleases me more than a game of Red Alert 2, which I already have.
i honestly had no knowledge of this game until someone told me about it the other day. the bastard.

this game has about as much in common with Red Alert 2 as it does with Asteroids. i will say, however, that it's everything C & C Renegade could and should have been. they took all the cool features of Delta Force and the Day of Defeat mod and put them together with huge levels and loads of vehicles, and it all works ridiculously well. and once again, my consoles are dust magnets...

It sounds like an awesome game. I remember Microsoft tried doing this a number of years ago with their game, Urban Assault (which I remember playing at E3 on "super-speedy" P2-400Mhz machines ), which took the "battle/large levels/multiple vehicles you could control from a first-person perspective" idea and put it the future. It just didn't have the foot soldier/regular FPS perspective...it was all vehicles.

I guess you could argue that Battlezone predated even that.

Anyway, I lvoed Urban Assault, and I'm sure I would love this, but I only have but so much time in the day to play any games, and my Xbox will not become a dust magnet anytime soon, so I have to keep that in mind.

I cannot fly a plane either.

and boy does that stink.

My favorite vehicle? The jeep. Man do the people on RW have fun with me when I get in a jeep and start speeding across the entire map knocking guys up into the air!
This will be on Xbox I believe early next quarter and Xbox Live will support it.

Personally, I prefer console shooters over PC ones, maybe cause the controls don't bother me at all.
Yeah I'm really happy with bf1942 - the variety of vehicles is staggering, thre maps are waaay more varied and pretty than I figured they'd be, and you just ain't lived until you've sank a full-sized battleship with a sub.

My only gripe is still the inaccuracy of rifles up close in 1 vs 1 combat; I spray a guy and he doesn't seem to take damage while I die, the next guy I meet, it's the reverse and I live though I know he should have hit me. Pretty wacky, might be 100% related to the netcode. This game seems very server dependent, and there are PLENTY of slow servers up right now trying to host games that are way too large for their connection, but when you find one that can really hold 64 players it's friggin incredible.

There's alot to do in this game, and I often find myself going from tank to infantry to ship to plane to infantry to sniper to AA gun to etc. etc.
On and on - Good stuff for any FPS/Action war-sim fan.

GAME. SO. ADDICTIVE.

Really for all its flaws this game just kills. I mean some of the scenes I have seen have been increidble. People flying through the air is immensely funny.

Yea you can get frustrated but since deaths actually means less then say MOH:aa it doesnt really matter. You can still come out top of map while getting killed a buncha times.

FUN FUN FUN

I love finding the perfect sniping position (since most maps are so damn big) and just unloading on enemies cresting a hill or mountain side. Often times you have to go WAY out of your way to get there undected but it is certainly a good time.

But it is so lovely taking out guy after guy after guy and them all wondering where the hell you are out.

64 player fights are crazy with the right connection.
Sniping is awesome. It just sucks when you have to go get some ammo.

It's better to die after you do that. Much easier having to walk back to base or sneak into an enemy base and grab ammo.

Also, I've found much love for the engineer. Nothing like laying landmines over a pinch spot. Then laying dynamite in the same area. When the tank driver goes to slow down or get out and disarm mines, you flip the switch and no more tank and dude.

Also, another engineer tactic is to not actually take over an enemy spawn point, but to line the area with dyno and sit and wait. I blasted 10 guys one time doing this.

Another cool thing is to sneak onto an enemy base, lay dyno in jeeps or on tanks, wait till an enemy tries to get in, and then blammo!
