Halo. Love.

Didn't really find a topic related to general discussion of this game. I know it's been out for ages, too. But anyway...

FINALLY got my X-Box and this was the first game I threw in. Seriously, if this is the only game I ever like for the X-Box, I'll still be happy. Sweet Christmas, I am enthralled by it. And it's fast. I was taken aback by how fast I was bouncing around the first few rooms with all the characters battling on screen in the relatively small rooms of the ship.

I've barely scratched the surface on this game and I'm already in love with it. I received two other games with the system, but I don't see them getting a chance in the system for quite a while.

Yeah...the X-box is really a Halo-box that happens to play some other pretty nice games (I'm REALLY digging NFL2K3 right now).

But Halo is unstoppably good. Aside from the level design from the middle of the game toward the end, it's near perfect. And you have so many great moments ahead of you even just with the single-player experience.

- The first time you use a Scorpion tank
- When you discover the REAL threat at hand through one unfortunate crewman's video recorder
- The first large-scale ice battles between your Marines and The Covenant.
- And lot of other stuff I can't tell you about because it'd ruin the great story that's to unfold.

And best of all....when you're done with all of that, you have the multiplayer experience. Just awesome.

It's a little silly, but my jaw dropped when I went to reload my rifle and there was an entire reloading animation. It caught me completely by surprise to see that detail and I got blasted. It's so cool to actually have to use cover and concealment while in the heat of battle. I'm used to tapping a button and the gun is magically loaded again. I'm sure it will get frustrating in later levels, but right now I'm totally digging on the tactics that must be implemented to survive.

One of the most halirious things that happened during that game was the time a friend and I were playing Co-op and I was at the top of a mountain and my friend at the bottom.

I throw a grenade and one of the little guys gets scared and throws himself off the mountain screaming. Lo and behold my friends hears the screaming looks up and sees the thing drop right in front of him. Classic.

After that he left me in the dust during a critical get the hell out of dodge sequence. Bastard!

And too think that was the one and only night I played that. Till 4 a.m. I most likely will get an X-Box soon and that is thee foremost reason to get it computer version coming or not.

Wait until you discover the maddening of frustration of the reload sequence when your getting fragged in multiplayer.

Indeed!

Few things are more maddening than getting the drop on someone and unloading your entire clip into them to leave them just inches away from death, and then as you reload, watching them shoot you into oblivion.

The reload animation has been in countless PC FPS's since, gee I don't know....1998?

Yes, Verbs...but Halo has one of the more natural looking and seamless ones.

For example...if you are in the middle of reloading and you switch to another weapon, it's quick because you're just changing hands.

But when you switch back, you must STILL reload the weapon you didn't finish reloading the first time.

Also, when you're getting shot, you re-load a bit slower.

Just little things like that that add that extra little bit of immersion.
Yeah, that's true. I wasn't trying to make a stink or anything, just wanted to make sure people knew it wasn't some X-Box exclusive.

I'll agree though, moreso than any FPS in recent memory the reload is a HUGE factor in the game. The fact that your reload ability is hindered when you are getting shot does wonders for the overall realism.

And yeah, in other games you'd start to reload a gun and then switch to another, then switch back and it would be fully reloaded. Not so here.

I'm strictly a console gamer, so for me this is nice to finally see implemented. I was getting tired of double tapping R2 and Snake suddenly has a full magazine. Immediate Action Drills take longer than half a second, regardless of how good you are.

Hooray for HALO!

Now is when I get pissed.

Is there any way to alter the AI of your support squad? I'm on the level where you need to get to the transporter to infiltrate the Covenant ship where they're holding the Captain. I've advanced the group to the section where you round the corner and the cliff is on the left side. I know exactly what I want to do and what position I want to take to snipe the gunners and other assorted enemies, but the group is providing me with little-to-no cover fire. It's seriously pissing me off. I'm guessing I'll find another suitable spot to fire, but the lack of support from my team at this point is annoying.

So I stopped and tried out Munch's Oddysee. Nice graphics and fairly fun. I'm enjoying it.

And you'll enjoy it even more as you advance. A special game.

WHATEVER YOU DO....SAVE EVERY SINGLE FURBALL/MUDOKON THAT YOU CAN. I got the bad ending after close to 20 hours of play because I didn't save enough of them.

And whenever you can, try NOT to have the furballs or Mudokons fight for you. And if they do, don't let them do it alone- help them.
There's no way to adjust your teams AI, you'll get through it. There is a part later in the game that had me stumped for days but I finally overcame.
The part in HALO that still has Dennis (GOT) stumped, you ask?

Multiplayer.
Oh that's right we're in the Justin zone. That 24-48 hour window just prior to a Halo session in which he runs his mouth uncontrollably. Unfortunately that is quickly followed by radio silence as his life force fades.

Fuck your mother!

sounds like you guys have alot of fun playin this.

Any of you enter the tourny couple of weeks ago?
Got waxed myself but fun nonetheless.

I'm desperate here (well maybe not desperate) and I am trying to get an X-Box and this game. Yet dont know if I want to get X-Box considering I have a PC and Halo will come out in a few months or whatever for comp.

I want a cheap X-Box and Halo game but I don't want crappy quality. I know I am asking for impossibility but I am a man of faith a certainly I have enough faith to find this!

Help anyone...WHAT SHOULD I DO!!?!?!?!

I think Halo is coming to PC in april.. right before Halo 2 hits on the box, completely negating the existence of Halo on PC altogether.

oops, damn return key. I think that should read "who works for..." Anyway, said relative hooked me up big time for my birthday/Christmas thanks to the bargain basement prices he gets on stuff.

Question: Does the difficulty setting affect the ending? I'm continually getting destroyed on the last section of "Truth and Reconciliation" (at the transporter to the Covenant ship) so I pussed out and started up a new game on Easy. I'm wondering if when I get to the end I'll receive a screen that says, "Congradulation! You Are Good Gamer! Now try next difficulty!"
If you beat the game on legendary you get a different ending than you do on the other settings.

Damn my PS2. I suppose it's to much to ask for a Playstation version evebtually.....

The way the game is structured....it couldn't be played on any platform that doesn't have a hard drive.

So Legendary is the only difference? I'm okay with that for now. MY FPS skills have really gone down the shitter. I'm shamed.
What is the other ending anyways?
I'm man enough to tell you that I'm not man enough to know what the alternate ending is first hand.

And here I was standing in awe of your HALO skills. The disclaimer on the legendary setting alone is enough to make me run away crying for Mommy.
My forays into the Legendary realm have been brief affairs.
I've played and beaten it on every level except Legendary. ONLY I got to the very end of Legendary where you're driving the warthog thru the very end level and my game got erased. Don't ask. Anyway I've been replaying thru it on Legendary and I can't see myself every playing it on a lesser difficulty setting.

The second level where you're holed up on the outside base and the dropships just keep coming again and again bringing wave after wave of covenant forces is probably the biggest rush I've ever had in a game..period.
What about the point where you have to take the transporter up into the ship? Covenant troops just keep beaming down and kicking your ass.
I've never beaten it on Legendary either...but one of the OXM magazine discs I have - has the Legendary ending cutscene on it....

Spoiler (Not much of a spoiler though)....

....it briefly shows more of the Flood and Covenant on the surface of Halo as it's exploding at the end. That's it really...not much difference to put yourself through the punishment of Legendary.
Do have any shooter slang of your own? My friends and I came up with some FPS terms for Halo:

"Hamas"- Whenever you kill an opponent with a grenade just as they kill you.

"Major Tom"-When you leap off into space in the Boarding Action map.

"Shotgun Wedding"- When two opponents dance around each other trying to blow each other away with shotguns.

SPOILERS

So, I met THE FLOOD yesterday. What. The. Hell?! Awesome stuff. I thought those giant Covenant rhino-type guys were a pain in the ass, they were nothing! I'm lasting about 45 seconds on the Guilty Spark mission right now. The bombardment never stops. Great fun. It takes the edge off of not getting Vice City until Christmas.

I remember reading a lot about how HALO is the first game in a long while that makes you actually care about the story and what happens to the characters. After playing through the Silent Cartographer mission (LOVE this mission) and up to Guilty Spark, I can totally understand. There is better storytelling here than in a lot of movies I've seen recently. After Cortana's little rant I was starting to get nervous and planting me in the hazy jungle didn't help, then seeing all the destroyed Covenant weaponry was eerie. Watching the video from the helmetcam sealed the deal. Good stuff.

And I love me some destruction with the Ghost.

Yep, I finally started doing that the last few times I played through and I did last a bit longer. I've decided I'm not a big fan of the shotgun, I prefer the plasma rifle.
Like most FPS games, the shotgun is a great weapon if you take the time to aim with it. If you hit with most your shots. it's a devestating weapon.

Alot of times, the action moves too quick to actually aim though.
