Best RPG other than Final Fantasy

Thread Starter
Final Fantasy is a plain given that's why I'm asking for your other favorite RPGs. I loved Chrono Trigger for the SNES and Chrono Chross for the Playstation. I thought Legend of Dragon is a great game to. Their are many others because I love pretty much every RPG there is.
I loved both Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. They were original in what they did, and I really got into the emotional aspects of the characters in a way that I really haven't with many other games.

recent gem would be Arcanum.

older fav of mine would be Shining in the Darkness for the genesis. First rpg I ever played and got sucked into.

Skies of Arcadia

I would say Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, but that's not really fair because it's pretty much the same people behind the Chrono games as the Final Fantasy games. Outside these games, it would have to be Zelda: Ocarina of Time, unless your talking traditional RPG as opposed to action RPG. Then it's Mario RPG.

Only if you're under the age of twenty and have never played anything other than a console...

Sorry, pet peeve. Final Fantasy, while an enduring and entertaining franchise, is not the be-all and end-all of RPG's, not even if you discount titles from before 1990.

FF is ON RAILS. I love it, but I think X-COM, Pool of Radiance (gold box), and Shining Force II are the bestest.
Your main gripe, like mine, is that the RPGs on the PC go completely unnoticed. I love the FF games, don't get me wrong, but there are tons of RPGs on the PC that are terrific and even more deep and involving gameplay-wise than most on the consoles.

Fallout 1 & 2
Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
Icewind Dale
Planescape: Torment

Hands down, some of the best games ever made. Put them up against ANYTHING on a console.

"Best RPG's Other than Final Fantasy?"
Answer: I wouldn't know, joking.

But seriously folks, I would have to say Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2(DC), Star Ocean 2, Breath of Fire 3, and Xenogears.

I really don't like PC RPG's or RPG's based on the D&D, so don't flame me for not putting them on my list.

Damn, I forgot to mention Panzer Dragoon Saga for the Sega Saturn, that game was awesome and I'm so hyped for the new on X-box.

I gotta rent some of them, I have never played them, but I have a whole bunch of music downloaded from the series.

Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger—Chrono Cross—are better than any FF, save 3. The Zalda games too.

Zelde dammit ... I mean Zelda.

Breath of Fire(SNES)
Earthbound(SNES)
System Shock(PC)
Ultima Underworld(PC)
Ultima 7(PC)
Crystalis(NES)
ShadowRun(SNES)
Fallout(PC).

Earthbound is probably my favorite. As for the Final Fantasy games, the first one and all of the Sony ones weren't that great, but 2 and 3 on SNES were classic.

I didn't know that Zelda was going to considered an RPG, so if that's the case I would have to also put on my list "The Battle of Olympus".
Maybe it is just because it is new and my current favorite game but, Golden Sun for GBA can give anything listed above a run for its money.
Console wise? I really loved Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross (even though I never finished the latter), but my favorite is the original Suikoden for the PS1. One of my favorite games of all time.

PC? Baldur's Gate 2 or Planescape: Torment.

(Edited because I forgot about the glorious Earthbound for SNES. Whatever happened to the sequel for the N64/GC?)

Fallout 1 and 2.

A side note: every RPG should have the option of upgrading to "Bloody Mess".

Phantasy Star I II and III

I never got to play IV.

Skies of Arcadia is the best modern day game.

Dungeon Master for the Atari ST computer is still the best RPG ever made.
Shadowrun for SNES.
What about the new D&D game from Troika. The temple of elemental evil. It should be a pretty good release I imagine. I have now done a good amount of reading on it and would love to beta test the game. Won't get chosen... ever... for any game. I guess it is the role O' the dice. I love the turn-based cobat though.
Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Suikoden 1-3, Shadow Hearts, Wild Arms, Tales Of Destiny, Tales Of Phantasia, Star Ocean: Second Story.
recently, I would have to say Star Wars:Knights of the Old Republic for Xbox. It's really the first game on console that is like a PC rpg.( aside from Morrowind, but that sucked like cheap hoe, mainly cuz of combat) It holds is own as a great SW game and a great RPG. And nothing beats weilding dual lightsabers wink

All-time classics, not from FF are
Skies of Arcadia (DC)
Chrono Trigger & Chrono Cross
(sorry, I was raised on Console RPGs)
Freedom Force (If zelda is an RPG, than so is this)
Diablo 1&2

and while it might not be one of the greatest, Kingdom Hearts was sweet.

PS. is it worth getting Xenogears, i hear its one of the best?
Where's the love for the original Grandia?

Still, Shadowrun for Genesis is probably my fave...if that counts as an RPG.
SW:KOTOR
Morrowind
Skies of Arcadia
Chrono Trigger

Can't believe I read that many posts before Phantasy Star got mentioned. I absolutely loved III.
Kingdom Hearts
Shadow Hearts (Before the roadblock with the heavy door, that is.)
Unlimited Saga.

I'm hoping RPGs based on LXG and Van Helsing will arrive soon....

Enjoy NWN. Liked Morrowind. Beginning to hate Baldurs.
