Tomorrow is "PS2" day at my house...

I will pick my son up from school, tell him "Let's go get your birthday present." And we will purchase a PS2, a second hand-held, a memory chip and a few games.

I'm planning on picking up "Baldur's Gate" for us to play together. Any other picks for a soon-to-be-9-year-old?

And then, of course, there's the collection I'll need just for me:

Nightfire
Silent Hill
Two Towers

No One Lives Forever
Splinter Cell
The Thing

Damn, I need something for the kid to play, too!

Ratchet and Clank

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus

Jak Daxter or whatever the heck it's called.

Three good kid-friendly platformers.

Thanks, Singer. Those look great!

SSX Tricky is good and cheap.
I think Tony Hawk 4 is cheap by now... my cousins of that age group love that one (as do I).

The PS2 is a great system, but if you want my opinion...i'd say you would be better off getting him a Gamecube. For starters, it's cheaper. Also, it's perfect for someone so young. You and him could have a ball with Mario Golf...not too involved at all for a kid to learn. Not only that, but Luigi's Mansion, the Star Wars games (with Rebel Strike coming), Super Mario Sunshine, and basically 3/4 of the GC library would be suitable for him.

Just a thought....and a reminder that there ARE games for you on the GC, Nightfire/Splinter Cell included.

Plus...Mario Kart Double Dash in October.

How could you forget to mention Super Smash Brothers Verbal?

Some friendly and fun games for the PS2:
Jak and Daxter is just a great platflomer, plus Jak 2 comes out in October
Maximo: Ghosts to Glory is a fun hack and slash platformer
Baulder's Gate as you mentioned is good
SSX Tricky and Tony Hawk are both cheap as previously mentioned and aren't half bad
Dynasty Warriors 4 is a fun beat em up
Gran Turismo 3 is great but it's only one player
The Two Towers you can play with your kid too, don't be gready Blofeld
Final Fantasy X also, but I'm not sure if your kid is to young or not

I'd say Timesplitters 2.

War of the Monsters.

Insane B-movie fighting game, massive destructable cities, and a plenty of fun multiplayer options. Plus, a martian brain in a jar on robot legs!
I'll second War of the Monsters and Dynasty Warriors 4. I'd also add ZOE 2 and don't forget there are tons of PSX games that are still worth owning. Ico and Burnout 2 are cool as well.
Way of the Samurai, too.
Freaky Flyers is a fun game for all ages.

Crash Team Racing for the PSX is about as good as kart racing games get. Yes, even better than Mario Kart. Burnout 2 is a pretty good driving game, but multiplayer Crash Mode nudges into "must have" status.

Yeah, Blofeld. If you do go with the PS2, Ico is an absolute MUST.

I have one happy boy. He's in there playing "Monkey Ball 2" right now. "Wait a minute!" you scream. "That's not available on PS2!"

Well, you're right. I took him to the store, and he had his heart set on a Gamecube -- what he's wanted for awhile now. And it is his early birthday present...

So, what is a dad to do?

I picked up "Nightfire" and "Baldur's Gate" for me. "Monkey Ball 2" and "Wind Waker" for him.

What a champ!

Happy Birthday to mini Blo.

He's willing to share Monkey Ball with me ... but has asked that I not play Wind Waker. Fair enough. Oh, and he wants me to buy Smash Bros Mele for his sister tomorrow (apparently she liked that game when she played it at a friend's house...)

I think he might be working the angle...

Crap, see below post.

I was about to tell you to get Smash Brothers damn it but you beat me to it, it's a great game and both you and your son would enjoy it. Also, wish a happy birthday to the little Blofeld to little Blofeld from the samurai (you don't have to actually tell if you don't want too).
I was just about to ask how the Blofeld Family Gaming Extravaganza went. All seems well in Blo-ville. Great job!

Can't remember if you're a Star Wars fan or not, but Rogue Leader is virtually a must-have for the 'cube, and the next one is hitting in October, so you should be able to find the first one at discount. It's old-school Star Wars, no prequel stuff, and it looks fan-freakin-tastic.

For the adults, I can also heartily recommend Eternal Darkness and the Resident Evil games (if you're a horror fan), and Metroid Prime is pretty cool too, but it was hard as hell towards the end, for me at least.

Dude you're such a turncoat. We take the time to give you PS2 recommendations and you turn around and get a GC.

Oh well, at least your kid is happy.
damn, a cube. Never saw that twist coming. Cue the Shyamalan flashback.

Monkeyball is great, save the annoying eeeeeeeeeeee!

My daughter and I started a Baldur's Gate journey last night. She was playing the Elvish Sorceress, me the Dwarven Fighter. Her strategy: stay behind the Dwarf until all the rats are killed, then smash all the barrels.
Hey, she cribbed that from me!

And of course, by the time I'm good and hurting, she's got all of the healing potions. "Drop one of those for me, sweetheart." "No."

The Dwarf is what I played, kicked some ass too.

Check out Mario Party, pretty fun game.

Now you should consider getting the digital crack that is Animal Crossing.
