The Thing

Is anyone going to get this game? I think it looks pretty good and I love it how you don't know if your partners are aliens or humans.
Whithead already played it, here's his take.

I can't wait for it.

Whitehead, even.

I read Dan's review before, good review. Can't wait for it to come out. On Sci Fi you can win a free copy autographed by the master John Carpenter.
Ok, it's out, at least for PC and PS2. Should I wait for X-Box?

I AM going to buy it, regardless, so I'd like to at least get the best version I can...
Is it any good? Looks alittle like Extermination, the PS2 game that took place in some snowy location. I've seen bits and pieces of The Thing, and I liked what I saw. Is it basically like another companys take on Resident Evil? If so, that can be a good thing(Silent Hill) or a bad thing(Countdown Vampires).

I think it'll play better on a console than on the PC, but as to PS2 or Xbox? Xbox version looks nicer, but they're pretty much the same otherwise.
Whoever buys this, let us know how the controls are.

Dennis (God of Thunder) and I played this in San Diego, and they were terrible. You couldn't really walk in a straight line, only sort of sideways.

I'm hoping this has changed, because it's a great game title, but if the controls haven't been improved the the game is ass.
This was for the X-box, by the way.
I've heard about that control problem too.

But my biggest worry right now is if they've fucked up Macready's voice. I saw a demo movie of this on the web the other day, and he sounded like some third rate Solid Snake reject, not even close to Kurt Russell's pure gravel. I'm not kidding when I say that I could do a far superior Macready impersonation myself.
You don't play Macready.
Yeah, but I think you do hear an recording from him.
There's definitely someone in the demo trying to attempt a Macready voiceover.

Either that, or I'm hearing things.
I bought the ps2 version. Will comment more after playing.
The trailer for the game, which plays on G4 CONSTANTLY, features a voice-over by Macready. They explain it as a tape recording discovered by the new investigative team.

I still have hopes for this game.

Let me know how it is. The demo version I had showed promise, but could've gone either way. I'm hoping they've at least created a fun game that does the movie justice. Anything beyond that is a bonus.
It's out already? for some reason I thought this was at least a month away... eek!
I must admit, I got a good deal on it, as I had 35 bucks worth of coupons to use at Media Play. But that won't color my opinion...

So far, the game is fine. Atmospheric and spooky, with good voice performances and music. I have yet to hear that telltale Carpenter ba-bump music though; I hope they use it somewhere along the line.

Controls are working just fine for me, but there is more depth here in the inventory and weapons systems than most console games I've played. You can use items directly on the environment and on your teammates, or give them items and weapons to use on their own accord.

The trust system is interesting so far, but has not had much impact this early in the game, even though some bizarre things have happened (it's funny to see teammates throw up when we stumble upon some mangled corpse).

I haven't gotten very far yet; I'm still exploring the Norwegian compound, but it's been fun so far. As someone who LOVES the film, I realy dug rooting around the ruined post, looking much as it did by the end of the flick. I'll check in later with a little more.
Jacob, you think this is a buy or more of a rent game, I've been playing Golden Sun and had not planned on getting anything else since Mario is only five days away. If it is really good I'll pick it up, if not it will just be a rental.
I'd definitely rent it first.

You don't think it's a keeper?

Try to respond quick because I was probably gonna be buying it later today.....
And try to explain why.
The controls suck and it's fairly a bore. The action is very clumsy.

On the bright side, it's tense and very moody.
For me, it's a keeper. I'm enjoying it. But the graphics ain't exactly state-of-the-art, and switching weapons, which is absolutely necessary during battle, can be frustrating sometimes.

That said, the adult themes, language and violence help keep it more interesting than your average survival horror, and the storline is very interesting so far. The save points are readily available and can be used as often as you wish, so that's a bonus as well, coming from a pc gamer used to being able to quick-save anywhere.

I also really like the teamwork aspect, there actually is some depth here, especially when you start getting suspicious of your buddies. Anything can, and does, happen.

That said, my only reason for recommending a rental first is that I don't play as many console games as some, thus I can't say my opinion is worth a hill of beans to hard-core PS2 players.

I like it. I like it a LOT. But I can see where others might not.

Alright, i'll like it then.

I don't care if the graphics aren't the greatest ever because if it's got a lot of gameplay that's all that matters. I've heard people say it's worth 15-20 hours or so and that's a whole lot more than most games these days.

And the movie is one of my all-time favorites and if this is anywhere near as suspenseful and eerily quiet then it'll be a winner.

Controls don't bother me either, you adjust to them. Hell, I love the Resident Evil control scheme.....

But thanks for letting me know, Jacob. And Tony.
And I disagree that the controls suck. There are a number of configuration types and modifications, such as auto-aiming, that can be tweaked for individual preference.

Also, I do recommend that if you buy the game, you RTFM (Read The Fucking Manual) as there are some nice tips, such as being able to lean around corners and fire in first-person-view using the strafe buttons, that aren't covered in the tutorials.

Yeah, but that's really bad news. I wanted the game to be good.
Thanks for the info, sounds like a rental to me. I love survival horror the first time through, I very rarely want to play them again though.
Jacob, it wasn't about the control configurations that had us miffed. It was mainly the fact that you couldn't walk in a straight line! You were always sort of walking sideways, which is crap.

Is this still the way it is in the game, because if it is, you can't tweak that.
Well, not having seen what you're talking about first hand, I can't be sure. I'm not having any trouble moving in a straight line, so maybe that was fixed.
Steve...

I rented The Thing today and actually haven't noticed that wierd sideways walking thing you and Dennis mentioned. It seems to control pretty well.

Unless like Jacob...I'm not noticing exactly what you mean.
Well, this is at least some good news. I was always planning on giving this game another chance anyway.
Just picked it up, can't wait to get started. I know this thing (no pun intended) is gonna be great.

I'm picking this game up this Saturday and I can't wait to start playing.
It's FUN so far, you can really feel a sense of isolation, and you WILL feel cold. The team aspects of the game are some of the most innovative ever. The graphics are great....i'm sure they are better on the X-Box but I don't care, they look sweet on the PS2.

Kicks ass and can't wait to play more...definitely a good purchase.

I finaly came back from EB and started playing The Thing and I love it. I'm not very far into the game but I can already tell it's going to kicks ass. And for everyone who thinks the controls suck what is your problem I think they are great.
The controls are fine, speaking as it does allow you to actually have configurations and customizations on it. The game is very tense and has a very nice survival feel to it - plus the AI is pretty well done. I don't really think the game has much of a scary feel to it but it does have lots of nice action and suspenseful moments.

Since I have the PS2 version, the graphics are great. The monster designs are awesome, and it seems like Computer Artworks engine worked fine.

My only real complaint - when way too many monsters surround you, espescially the big ones. You have to shoot at them first and them flame them in order to kill them. The Trust/Fear system is a novel concept: the way the soldiers react to their environment is pretty cool. I do find it quite cheap though whenever you do gain trust of your men that later on, they turn into monsters. Still, I'm surprised: this, along with Buffy, is a licensed game done right.

Rating: 8.5/10

is the action mostly indoors or you get to go out in the snow?

It switches between the two but mostly, it's indoors - which makes for some nice scares.
Sounds good. I'd like to be able to run outside and use the flamethrower on something... LOVE that contrast of the flames against the snowy backdrop, when Mac & co torch the hand-claw Thing in the movie.

You can pretty much go outside when you want to it's just not following the plot. I got a little further and it is really tense. I don't like how the monsters gang up on you either but I cant say much because I'm still at the Norwegian Base but those little spider things do team up on alot. I can't figure out haw to get into that one house in the north part of the base after you cross the electical fence thingy.
I agree with you guys....The Thing is cool as hell so far. I'm at the Norwegian Base too. I thought originally it would end up being a Resident Evil rip off ...just in a different setting. But NO...it truly captures the feel of tension from the J. Carpenter flick. Right down to the blood tests...when the blood just busts right out of the glass syringe !! There are even "in-jokes" that fans of the film will pick up on. Like when your character corrects a member of the team for calling dead crew at the Norwegian base "Swedes". This kind of stuff is just awesome for fans of the film.

They do tend to throw a lot of enemies at you..especially one section of the Norwegian base when tons of the tiny crab like things attack...but that's when you have to be sure and be smart with equipping your team members. Give them guns to earn their trust and they will help fight quite well. If they are low on ammo give them ammo and they will help you.

Great game though...I've rented the PS2 version but will most likely buy this one when it hits X-Box.
Question: I have yet to see The Thing(the movie, I know it's a shame), and I plan on getting the game before I see the movie. Is this wise? Should I see the movie first? Hopefully I can trade in a few games and get it at EB.
Thread Starter
You poor, poor child. How could you not have seen the movie yet, anyway see and buy the movie first because the game is the sequel to the movie.
Another example of how I could describe The Thing - Extermination done right with a little Half-Life thrown in for measure. The game does actually remind me of a third-person Half-Life somewhat, only...better.
I bought it this afternoon never having rented it based on my undying love of the movie as well as all the good reviews I've read. It's REALLY damn good so far. Terror-Mike's opinion is correct... it does feel like Extermination + Half Life = Greatness. This game is great. Go buy it now... no rent-o... all buy-o.
Oh, and just to point out, my Electronics Boutique gave me a free... FREE copy of the movie The Thing on DVD when I bought the game. It didn't come in the keep case, rather in a crappy jewel case... and I already own the DVD... but who cares!

So, to say to Nick Hexum, if you're EB near you is doing this too, go buy the game and get the movie free... watch the movie then play the game (in that order). Never seen The Thing... pah!

That's not fair, my Electronics Buetique didn't give me a free copy of the movie. Even though I already own it on DVD it's still not fair so POO on you.
This game is GREAT, i'm not sure how far I am but the most recent thing I had to do was kill 3 walkers so this guy would trust me. And then my teammates and I got COMPLETELY swarmed by little baby crawlers or whatever they are. They just kept coming and would NOT stop. You may know what i'm referring to. It was just ridiculous.
