Halo for PC (Discussion (the real one))

For people who actually care about the game and not the moral jousting in the other thread.

I'm evil and downloaded it. I have 2.2 GHz, 512 RAM machine, but the video card isn't up to snuff. It tells me this, and then crashes toe the desktop before the menu can load. Any suggestions? Support for this sucker is kind of hard to come by right now, for obvious reasons.

I've downloaded these versions of games before and what you have is probably a development copy and not cleaned up, so expect the actual release to work bettter.

Me, I'm waiting on an official demo.

Meh, this copy seems to work well on some computers. Mine, it's royally fucked for the most part. Flamethrower is cool though.

Flamethrower? What? I thought it was identical to the XBox version.
My copy is a beta, but it runs fine on my Athlon 2400+ with 768 DDR and Geforce 4 Ti4400. I have only played with the multiplayer for a bit, exploring new maps and such, but it runs like a dream.

I am just so used to playing HALO on the XBOX that the PC will most likely pale...but we shall see.

They've done a bang up job with the driving. It feels perfect. Hear me, Rockstar Games?
I thought the new additions were the multiplayer Banshee and the Ultra-Grunt's plasma cannon...? What's this flamethrower stuff?

And there's a Warthog with a rocket launcher, rather than a gatling gun.

Thanks for ruining my pants.

I wish I had a good computer.

Incontinent.
For clarification, the new stuff is in multiplayer only. Several new maps, ability to use the Banshee and alien Fuel Rod gun, flamethrower, and a new type of Warthogs with rocket launchers.

For those playing through the beta single player, do you frequently crash when moving on to the next level? I've found it impossible to progress after the end of Silent Cartographer. Oh well, the first few levels are enough to entertain me until the full game is out.

Here are some kickass screenshots, showing off some of the new stuff ingame:

Today, beyotches!

The single player is chunky and there are flaws. See lighting with the flashlight.

There is a patch. 1.01 out, so get that ASAP. It fixed a sound issue.

Now Multiplayer:

Think XBOX LAN party, with new guns and people that don't want to talk, and there you have it.

So far, so good. Runs very smoothly in 1024x768 with everything turned up and at 30fps. Multiplayer will be the real test...

Actually, I thought MP ran a lot better. Though, that's with low ping servers.

What system are you running on? And did you get the patch? It's supposed to fix some performance issues.

I'm running Halo on a 1100 Mhz processor, 32 meg Video Card, 384 megs of ram, and an old ass sound card.
2.0Ghz, 768mb RAM, GeForce4 64mb Ti 4200, crappy Sound Blaster card. And I did not get the patch yet.

I was reading in a review yesterday some complaints that the framerate was locked at 30 fps. It can be lower, but you can't make it go higher. Is this the case?

There is a tab to adjust the frame rate, but I haven't messed with it yet.
I didn't try to increase it, but I think you can...at least I think the arrow was highlighted to make it higher...
Theres an option for the framerate lock thing. It's default locked at 30, but your free to set it to infinite or cannot exceed refresh rate.

The thing is, the game runs like SHIT on even the most powerful systems. It is the worst performing game currently on the market. Tron 2.0 stressed my system to the max, but this runs even worse. It's a shitty port.

Still, the multiplayer is infinitely fun, so it's worth getting.

Multiplayer- AWESOME. Fucking amazing, and has made me decide to buy the game. Death Island is so fun, but good old Blood Gulch...ah, I love this game. And the Plasma Rocket Launcher is cheap as hell, but cool. Flamethrower is sweet too.

Best of all, the server I was on had zero lag. We might as well have been playing on XBOX.

Since the game was running great in what's essentially a 733 Mhz Pentium III with 64 megs of Ram, it makes you wonder why many PC games perform so badly.

Because too many PC games are developed with nice screenshots in mind, not good games.

I don't know what kinda specs this game was made in mind for, or if it favors Nvidia like most Xbox ports. (I wanted to buy MGS2:Substance, but it supports ONLY Nvidia cards, what a fuckin load)I've got an Athlon 2200, 512 Ram, and a Radeon 9700 Pro. Running at 1024 with all details the game drops to 15fps during any firefight.

I've heard that the games Pixel Shader 2.0 programming is shitty, and a possible fix is adding the command -use10 or -use11 to the game shortcut to make it use pixel shader 1.0 or 1.1.

The bottom line is, Gearbox fucked up bad. They did a crap job optimizing performance. What they did do right, was the new multiplayer levels. Those are fantastic. The game runs better in multiplayer than single player, too.

Graphics req: 32 megs T&L. That's hardaware transform and lighting.

My brother is one of those resolution whores. It's like EVERY game has to run at resolution levels much higher than even HDTV.

It looks great for me.

I'm running it at 1280x1024 with 4xAA and 8xAF and it's smooth. I jacked it up to 1600x1200 and had big time slowdown.

The graphics are sweet but it isn't on par with Unreal II or any of the latest games. Still, it looks a hell of a lot better than it does on the XBox.

Not only is the video better but the audio seems to have been cleaned up and it sounds much clearer than before.

The multiplayer is a blast. I'm lovin it.

I like the update program.

Too bad it didn't come out on PC first like it was supposed to. Back then it would have been a breakthrough.

I am playing through the single player again though because it looks and sounds so much better.
