Mario Sunshine - Page 2

Picked this up today. Sold it after an hour of playing.

Found it boring, not my style.

Wasn't a fan of Mario 64 either.

So why did you get it in the first place?

I guess i'll have to go with the "To each his own" line, but if he doesn't like Mario what is his own? wink

Verbs, since you have a guide there are two areas I can't do anything with. From the main area, there is an island that I need a Yoshi on but can't get to, and from the main area where the boats pass through there is a bridge that I can shoot into from underneath and I get to an area with sand that if a make any move I fall back to the begining, any advice?
I think that second area you are talking about is the secret that takes you to the plinko machine. Just stand on the front side (the side without the ramps) and zoom all the way out and you can see the whole machine. You just jump on the square to the right of the plinko machine and it launches you to the top.

Love...this...game. Muhahahaha. Damn you Sand Bird.
I've got like, 88 stars...going a little slower now as they have gotten tougher to come by. It will be a gradual process but i'll get all 120.
Bought it tonite. Playing it in lieu of hard ass Accounting II homework. Much fun had.

Super Mario Sunshine selling at record pace, says Nintendo.

September 05, 2002 - Nintendo of America today announced that in its first 10 days on the market, its 3D platformer Super Mario Sunshine has sold through upward of 350,000 units. The title has already earned a spot as one of the Top 15 best selling games of this year, according to the company.
Super Mario Sunshine follows Nintendo's mascot plumber on an all-new 3D platforming adventure. After being framed for a crime he didn't commit, Mario must clean up a polluted island using a water-spray gadget mounted on his back. The game has earned high marks from the majority of specialized and mainstream press for its tight play mechanics, big worlds and pretty visuals.

"This launch is historic -- promising to break longstanding records," said Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America. "So far, sales rates for Super Mario Sunshine are running 36 percent ahead of even Super Mario 64 six years ago -- and that game went on to sell more than 10 million units worldwide."

Nintendo pointed out that Super Mario Sunshine's opening was significantly larger from a sales standpoint then either Halo for Xbox or Grand Theft Auto 3 for PlayStation 2. The firm also noted that retailers across the US have been reporting on average a 50 percent jump in GameCube hardware sales, sometimes double that, since Mario's debut.

A great start for sure. It will be interesting to see, though, if Super Mario Sunshine will have the staying power of Halo or GTA3 one month from now.

More as it develops.

Damn straight, and it deserves to break records. The way I saw it, the N64 never got a better game than Mario 64, and to follow it up would have had to be a massive undertaking.

Thank God it was worth it. We got it last night and played for literally 6 hours straight, barely breaking to go to the bathroom. What an amazing game, and after reading this thread and seeing how deep it really is, I love it that much more.

Be prepared for this to happen a lot. I popped the game in last night with the intent of only playing for about a half hour. Needless to say that stretched out to two and a half hours...
Yeah, I had a few day-long sessions. Nothing to do is a terrible thing indeed...

I'm still stuck on 90 shines.
A couple of my buddies reactions upon seeing it were "Mario is totally gay." It took some convincing, but I got them to play it, and one went out and bought a Gamecube specifically for it, the other is over at my house constantly wanting to play it.

40 shines and still 80 to go...damn this is fun.
I'm up to 25 shines...my God do I have a long way to go. And I'm going to love every goddamn minute of it.

You might not be saying this after trying some of the challenge level red coin games, they can be complete hell.
Yeah, it gets absolutely ridiculous in some spots. You will die.....A LOT.
You know what's been the most frustrating of all of them so far? The out of control Ferris Wheel in the amusment park level. Is there any way at all to get rid of those damn koopas climbing on the gates?
Johnny has forsaken me for Super Mario Sunshine...

GODDAMMIT I WANNA PLAY TOO!

Ahh, memories...

Anyhoo, I'm debating between a GC superpack from Costco or Shemue II and Vice City + DVD's for Christmas. I can't decide. Sunshine tempts me.

Johnny - I hope I'm remembering this correctly. If you can get on the opposite side of the gate - opposite meaning the one the koopas AREN'T climbing on, you can butt stomp them into oblivian.

I think I'm at about the half-way point in this game. I have 62 shines, or about that many. However, they don't come so easily any more. I'm currently getting my ass kicked at different points in the different levels.

Pirana Beach, trying to clean off the goop in under 3 minutes: my ass kicked.

The rescue the mayor from the fire goop level: my ass kicked.

Trying to use Yoshi: my ass kicked.

The second rollercoaster ride mission: my ass kicked.

Oh, and the Plinko mini-game is also driving me nutty.

It's hard. But fun, for sure.
The hardest thing i've done so far was rescuing the mayor from all the lava. Absolutely frustrating beyond belief. However, there is sort of a way around getting there from underneath.

You know how when you get out of water and Mario still shakes off a little bit of water?

Well, what the strategy guide tells you to do is keep running back and forth from the pond to the lava leading up to the mayor's platform (that golden mushroom, I think) and you can create a path by splashing the water on the lava. It's sort've frustrating but I managed to do it after....oh about 45 tries.....

The Plinko game makes me want to die. The top right coin is a hateful bitch.
Johnny,
Here's an easier way to do it: walk up to the person who tells you the ferris wheel is out of control. From there jump to the bricks that are directly underneath the ferris wheel. Next hover to the catwalk above the two swinging ships. From the top of the catwalk hover to the top of the ferris wheel tower where the giant turtle is. It looks as if you will hit the ferris wheel, but you don't...
Hope this helps!
You can also punch those suckers off if you are on the opposite side of the gate - with the little red button.
Ah-HA! I knew there had to be something easier, and I can get on the platform above those ships with no problem.

Thanks!
No problem!

I fall off of everything, (lacking the insane gaming skills of your average five-year-old,) so I have to try to find crazy ways of doing things. Now if I could only find a way to escape jumping on all of those pink blocks on the haunted mansion level...Sheesh!

So when I get 120 shines, and I will, some Last Starfighter shit better go down because that is the only reason that I can think this game would be so hard.

Getting a little tired of this mother farger. Anyone else not loving it all that much?

Thats funny Kevin, I was about to post the same thing. I think I have 92 shines, and I am just not caring to much about the rest anymore. Playing the same levels twenty times in a row and not getting the shine is fucking draining.
Just hit 76 last night, and anyone that's gotten that far knows what that means. I'm ready to go back and get the rest, but I can completly understand where the tiredness is coming from.

Remember what happened in Mario 64 when you got all the Stars? YOU GOT TO PLAY AGAIN! Bit of a let down.
I think I'm at 72, and it has certainly been fun. But it's starting to feel like a bit of a chore - in a way that I never felt in Mario 64. I don't think it's a GREAT game, but it's a good one. Here's hoping that 'Zelda' and 'Metriod' will rock the block.

That is my problem, after about 75 shines it kind of stopped being fun to try and get them anymore. There was still some satisfaction getting the next few, but when I hit 85 it was way more tedious than anything else. Think I'll play some more THPS3.
I haven't played since I got 91 or so, but that's due to Icewind Dale II and Kingdom Hearts, really...
I got to about 112 stars and all I had left were blue coins, so I pretty much stopped. Unless I find out about some big secret for getting all 120, I think I'm done for a while. Great while it lasted though.

Since I'm finally doing a major overhaul of my PC, I'm actually glad I got it cleared. Now I can make up for missing 2-3 years of computer gaming.
had this game for a month and a half I think and am only beginning to really play this game. The more I play, the more addicting it gets. Right now I'm up to about 42 shines. Weird how I've been pretty anal about exploring every nook and cranny for those blue coins...just finished my first battle with that centipede thing on level 3.

The only thing I could utter was god damn when it stormed for me, circled at the last minute quickly leaving a clone wars-esque wall of dust in its wake.

Enjoy it while you can. In a few months you won't be able to look at this game without cursing the makers.

"Collect these eight red coins to win a star"

How about I shove my foot up your ass eight consecutive times instead? It's faster, easier, and less painful for all involved. Fucker.
And why is it that all the fun missions are either really easy or really short? That sucks too.
I saw this at a pawn shop for ten bucks, and I didn't buy it.

Considering that I must have played through "Super Mario 64" at LEAST a dozen times, that's just a really sad indictment of how dramatically unfun this new game was.
Maybe I'm burned out on it from playing the game so much this weekend, but right now I can't wait until I have the bare mininum number of stars to get to the final boss.

I did not have the same feelings with Mario 64.

I can't imagine any end game bonus that could ever be worth the trouble of finding every star. This game takes tedium to new heights.

If you're playing for 100% in hopes of getting a cool bonus, stop playing right now.

Mario Sunshine's 100% "bonus" is perhaps the least rewarding "reward" in the history of videogames.
C'mon, Slater, who DOESN'T want to waste weeks (months?) of their life trying to get that one last star to see the AWESOME picture of Mario and Co. kickin' it old school in their rad shades?

Thats right, I forgot that the shit 100% ending was mentioned in one of the other threads. As far as trying for it, not a chance in hell, got sick of Mario and sold it back to EB months ago. I'm still holding out some hope for Mario 128 though.
