Also revealing their first screenshots this week are two licensed cop games - one heavily indebted to chunky knitwear, the other to eye-popping psychics. Starsky and Hutch (PC, PS2, GC, November 2002) was first announced as a game way back in 2000, when the idea of copying Driver probably seemed incredibly fresh and clever. Two years on, and the game looks like it may finally hit the street. No sign of David Soul or Paul Michael Glaser, but to the utter surprise of nobody, Antonio Fargas has whored himself out once again to record some no-doubt hilarious pimp-speak for the game. "When I saw it I was blown away", quoth the jive-talking one in a painful press release, "To be able to have one dude drivin' and another dude shootin' man I thought cool, I want me some of that". He was then forced to dive out of the way as a 1970s muscle car came careening through the pile of convenient cardboard boxes he was leaning on, before anyone could point out that Chase HQ 2 actually did the driving/shooting thing way back in 1990. Sucka.

Woo hoo!

Now all we need is are games of The Fall Guy, Battlestar Galactica and Magnum PI and my life will be complete...
If you want The Fall Guy, there's always Stuntman (although it is sadly Howie-less). And you don't get to do much bounty hunting. And it's a bit crap.

If there's any TV series from that era that would work as a videogame today, it's AIRWOLF.

Damn. I can't believe I forgot Airwolf.

Apparently they're waiting for a microprocessor with enough memory to accurately render every groove and crevice on Jan Michael Vincent's raisin-like face.

Ouch. Nice one, Dan.

Anyway, wasn't there an Airwolf game back in the 80's?

Copying (stealing) someone else's idea has always been a game within the gaming industry. eg. Drive & Shoot, Fly & Shoot...Who Cares!

Are you saying that the success of Driver wasn't the reason for this game getting produced, or just that unoriginality doesn't matter as long as everyone is doing it?

But then, judging by your sig, you're hardly unbiased in this instance.

First let's get one thing out of the way - Starsky & Hutch forever!. (Yeah!)

Now that said, as long as the game gets sold it really doesn't matter what you or I think. I'm sure that the success of Driver was a major consideration but the only one? I don't think so when you consider the licensing fees attached to the name, Starsky & Hutch. I'm speculating that they're trying to zero in on the 'original' gamers that are now in their 30's-40's.

I want A-team and Miami Vice games goddamit!

I doubt the license for Starsky & Hutch is that expensive. Hate to break it to ya, but it's not the hottest of properties. The fact that a small company like Empire Interactive can afford it speaks volumes.

And I do think that Driver is pretty much the only reason this game came about. Let's face it, Driver was a Starsky & Hutch game in everything but name, and it was inevitable that somebody would see that and decide to do it again, but with the official branding. If Driver hadn't come out, we wouldn't be talking about a Starsky & Hutch game now. It led the way technically, and aesthetically, and proved that it could be done.

Warner Bros. Studios now own most of the rights to the S&H story and they're betting (hoping) that by next year with an upcoming prequel-remake that the "franchise" will be of some value.

I haven't played Driver yet but what I've heard and seen so far sounds like my kind of game. That said, saying that a S&H game wouldn't be a made today if it wasn't for Driver is highly speculative to say the least.

So tell me, what makes Driver so great and what do you think so far about the upcoming S&H game?
Nobody seems to have mentioned the last one in that holy triumverate of cheezy-suped-up-black-vehicle-tv-shows... Street Hawk.

Could make an okay bike-based action game I think. Racing through the streets at 200+ mph. Soundtrack by Tangerine Dream.

An Automan game would be cool as well.

Of course the great thing about most of these games based on old tv shows, is that they could easily afford to pay the original cast members to do voiceovers... I mean Chuck Wagner isn't exactly busy these days.

Not really. The S&H game was announced after the blockbuster launch of Driver (which made it one of the most talked about games in the industry), and during the build-up to the (disappointing) sequel. Driver is a game where you drive around a realistic 3D city, screeching down alleys, knocking over cardboard boxes and generally indulging in exactly the same sort of car chase that typified Starsky & Hutch. Everything I've seen about the S&H game says that it will follow the exact same template, but with the addition of being able to shoot from the car while driving.

Driver invented and popularised the "cops and robbers car chases in 3D city" genre. Starsky & Hutch will be a cops and robbers game, with car chases in a 3D city. There's a very obvious lineage here. That ain't speculation. Driver made this game possible, both technically and commercially.

Driver is great because it was the first driving game to give you freedom of movement in realistic cities. Also, the game is designed to encourage handbrake turns, alleyway pursuits and death-defying leaps. The action replay allows you to position the cameras so you can direct your own action sequences.

It's fun.

As a Starsky & Hutch fan, you'd love it. The car you drive in the New York level is an obvious homage to the one from S&H. And when you've played Driver, you'll realise just how redundant an official Starsky & Hutch game is. We've already got an unofficial one that kicks ass. Add the fact that Empire Interactive have never produced a brilliant game (although they've put out quite a few OK ones) and I just can't see Starsky & Hutch being an improvement over the game that inspired it. The only thing it will add are better graphics (Driver was PS1) and the S&H characters. As a fan, that will probably be enough. I know I'll enjoy an average game more if it's based on Star Wars or Marvel Comics, so I don't begrudge you that.

Just don't expect anything amazing.

Once again, the mists of time have already been down that road. At 300mph. On a motorbike. Without falling off.

Christ, how many properties did Ocean have the license for in the 80's?
