PS2 Online

I picked up my PS2 network adapter and SOCOM today. The physical installation of the network adapter is a snap, literally. The start up disk that comes with it is also a breeze and even contains a how to video.

Within 10 minutes I got the adapter installed, configured my connection, and registered. Then it was off to play some games. The adapter comes with a few demo games such as Madden and Frequency you can play.

I went right for the football. I had to register with EA before I could play which was no big deal. Once connected I selected a room from which to choose opponents. Immediately I saw 20-25 other folks listed along with their connection speeds. I began to choose someone but was interrupted by a challenge from another user, do they know who their talking too?

We each selected our teams and began to play. On my first posession I drove to his 20 but missed a field goal. On his first posession he threw into the flat juked me and took it all the way. But wait, there's a flag. Clipping! It's coming back. We played to a 0-0 tie. The game was often quite choppy and I was worried that the experience would not be satisfactory.

I went back out to the lobby and challenged someone with a good connection. I took an early 10-0 lead but he came back and scored went for the conversion and it was quickly 10-8. He scored again and I found myself down 15-10. With less than a minute to go I ran a sweep to his thirty. Lightning struck twice and I ran it again down to the seven. I pounded it in with the fullback from there, 16-10 good guys. With seven seconds left I set up for the 2 point conversion at which point I got a message saying that my opponents connection had been dropped. HOW CONVENIENT!

Anyway, the second game ran exceptionally smooth and soothed my online console gaming fears for now.

I can't wait to unwrap SOCOM and start shooting folks.

So far I highly recommend the PS2 online capabilities.

I didn't know that SOCOM is already out. How much is the online play a month for SOCOM?

All I have to say is people who are waiting for FFXI to come out in the states in order to get a network adapter, be ready to pay Steel Batalion kind of money. From what I hear, you have to buy a hard drive to play FFXI, which is very expensive, at least in Japan. I heard the final cost to play the game was about $220, including a keyboard. I'm paying $29,000 a year for college, so I guess I'll have to pass on this fantasy, which was the only reason for me to get the network adapter.

Couldn't you get the PC version, Zan?
My PC would print out a note saying "please return game to store", if I tried to run it on the PC I use, but my dad just got a new computer: Pentium 4 2.26 ghz with a Geforce 4, that could easily run it, but I won't be able to use that computer, because I'll be starting college in a week. The thing is that even if I could run it on my PC, it just wouldn't be the same. It is hard to explain, but FF was meant to be played on a console. On the other hand if things get bad then I will buy it for the PC and just play it like every other weekend when I'm home.

I didn't fire up SOCOM last night but the online play is supposed to be free.

The last I heard the PS2 hard drive was not a done deal because they were struggling with price point.

Are you rank as to how many games you win? I knew people would try and disconnect themselves from a game to avoid getting a loss. Something that in PC games would get you a loss anyway, but unexperienced console players might try it nonetheless. Hope it doesn't get too annoying.

Nice to hear that the PS2 network is good and stable though.

I have heard reports today of the servers being so full that people were getting dropped. Maybe that's what happened to my loser opponent.
