I picked up my PS2 network adapter and SOCOM today. The physical installation of the network adapter is a snap, literally. The start up disk that comes with it is also a breeze and even contains a how to video.
Within 10 minutes I got the adapter installed, configured my connection, and registered. Then it was off to play some games. The adapter comes with a few demo games such as Madden and Frequency you can play.
I went right for the football. I had to register with EA before I could play which was no big deal. Once connected I selected a room from which to choose opponents. Immediately I saw 20-25 other folks listed along with their connection speeds. I began to choose someone but was interrupted by a challenge from another user, do they know who their talking too?
We each selected our teams and began to play. On my first posession I drove to his 20 but missed a field goal. On his first posession he threw into the flat juked me and took it all the way. But wait, there's a flag. Clipping! It's coming back. We played to a 0-0 tie. The game was often quite choppy and I was worried that the experience would not be satisfactory.
I went back out to the lobby and challenged someone with a good connection. I took an early 10-0 lead but he came back and scored went for the conversion and it was quickly 10-8. He scored again and I found myself down 15-10. With less than a minute to go I ran a sweep to his thirty. Lightning struck twice and I ran it again down to the seven. I pounded it in with the fullback from there, 16-10 good guys. With seven seconds left I set up for the 2 point conversion at which point I got a message saying that my opponents connection had been dropped. HOW CONVENIENT!
Anyway, the second game ran exceptionally smooth and soothed my online console gaming fears for now.
I can't wait to unwrap SOCOM and start shooting folks.
So far I highly recommend the PS2 online capabilities.
