How to tell when George Clooney is acting
(don't blink or you'll miss it)

There are no comparative studies on George Clooney's acting methodology because no one has wanted to do one. Fear has been cited as the reason for this -- fear of boredom. As in the case of Julia Roberts, a pretty face dulls the mind. Dazed and dazzled, a moviegoer often imagines seeing hidden emotions there: subtle longing, subtle pain, subtle grief. But no; it is only a smile, a blank smile, nothing more

There are, however, "breakout" moments in every George Clooney film — that is, brief instances in which George Clooney breaks out of George Clooney and acts. In most of his films, only one of these breakouts occurs, and that's why this user's guide has been compiled — it's a public service for those who've parted with hard-earned money to see George Clooney on the big screen. Here, in no particular order, are some George Clooney films. In each film we've pinpointed the acting moment(s), or breakout(s). To rid the world of Clooney on screen, you should subtract five cents for each moment mentioned here from the amount you paid to see Clooney on film or video. The remaining amount is what you should demand from the box-office or your neighborhood Blockbuster. If enough of us do it, we can rid the world of the Clooney scourge.

I know this is an Onion-like article, but they shouldn't have brought up "O Brother Where Art Thou" - he put together a dang fine performance in that one.

Clooney may not be a great actor in the "thespian" sense of the word but NO ONE has his charisma and screen presence.

I will now release my lips from his ass wink

I thought he was just a fucking miscast-as-all-hell TV-actor until I sat in the theater for "From Dusk Till Dawn" for the first time and he changed my mind about that in a matter of minutes.

Charisma and charm counts for a lot when you're on a screen that big.

I like him, but he has his ups and downs. Like Jack noted, he ruled in FDTD, but I got annoyed with him in Out of Sight, along with the general overkill on cool of that flick. He was good in Ocean's Eleven, but Brad Pitt owned his ass and that movie.

i consider myself a fan of Clooney, but that site seems based far more on their negative opinion of him than it does anything else.

plus, it's ugly.

another thing that people (particularly those who don't know much about movies) tend to ignore is that performances are dependent on the director more than the actor or the material. it's the director's job to get a certain performance out of an actor

Exactly, Dave. A bad director can hang even an experienced actor out to dry.
