Background info on our campaign:
This RPG Campaign takes place in the fictional town of Coldstone. It is a mid-western city (picture Chicago or Detroit), serving as both a port town (across one of the Great Lakes from Canada) and a thriving industial/commercial hub for all business between the coasts.
It has a bright center of business, the skyscraper-lined commercial district. this includes the bustling town government area. It also houses a bustling commercial harbor, a large city park, blocks and blocks of low-to-high income housing. Irish and other Euro-American groups dwell here. This is in the north and central part of town. An invsestor and Coldstone's "Number One Citizen", Steadman Avery conducts a large international business here. The vastly wealthy Avery is rumored to have everyone in his pocket... local beat cops all the way up to the Mayor, the underwhelming Joseph Eakin.
There is an elite part of town, where socialites gather. Fine art, dining and entertainment mark the nothwestern part of town. Museums, concert halls, the works.
Coldstone is a melting pot for nearly every ethnicity. In the southwest sector, one can find a thriving "Chinatown". This includes various other Asian ethnicites, Korean and Vietnamese as well.
In the southern part of town, one should avoid the turf wars of the African American and Hispanic gangs, both claiming specific parts of the area as their stomping ground.
The western part of town is home to Little Italy, the amazingly stereotypical Italian community. Here lies the home of the norotious "Don" Marco Capella, a "father figure" for the local people, and a growing economic force.
In the east, one finds the suburban, cookie-cutter homes of the middle class. Great strides are taken to make the "Chesterfield" district a safe haven for young families and "honest people". Libraries, schools, shopping mall... all you would expect here.
Finally, in the southeast, one can find an amusement park (think Coney Island), Kingsman International Airport, and more "seedy" elements, including a horse-racing track, exotic entertainment, and other such forms of excess.
Notes about the town:
Other than the track, gambling is illegal. Plenty still takes place of course, including unlicensed boxing and underground casinos.
While a powerful force in Coldstone, Mr. Avery is not a political player. No more than his money is concerned, anyway. A businessman who doesn't mind bending, breaking, and re-writing rules. He is one of the major forces in the town. Many of the player characters will find themselves working for him.
"Don" Marco Capella is the other major player in town. His organized crime syndicate has grown under the nose of Mr. Avery, into something much more powerful than the businessman is aware. Illegal gambling, "purchasing" of officials and policemen, prostituion, extortion, narcotics trafficking and all around racketeering are his fields of reach. Many of the players characters will find themselves working for Don Capella.
At this point, a "truce" exists between Avery and Capella. While Avery dismisses Capella as an "ethnic minority", he still understands the man's influence is notable. Capella has attracted the attention of his superiors in New York and Chicago, who have begun investing in the man and his efforts. He is waiting until he has the strength to take Avery out of the picture, and until then, is happy to play second string.
