Cap'n Katanga:
Diversions

Roman's left arm erupts in a fount of blood as the bullet tear through skin, meat and bone. He falls back down through the roof access. He pulls himself up on the stock of his rifle. He pulls his belt taut around his tattered arm. Clicking down on his radio...

Roman grits the strap of his weapon between his teeth and climbs back up top. Before reaching the exit...he props himself against the opposite wall...he rises just enough to fire a series of shots at the gearing of the helicopter blades.

"Whoever you are...you aren't leaving."
Your shots miss wildly, as your cover is perforated with hot lead. The blades are whipping full force now, wafting the rising smoke into your face.

Virgil 'Blunt' Abrizza:
"Why the fuck did I even get out of bed this morning?"

Just as the gunner open fires, Virgil jumps to the side and rolls over to the edge of the roof, barely avoiding being cut in half by the gunfire.

"I swear, I'm gonna work on that cocksucker Tivoli with a pair of plyers and a blowtorch."

He crouches, grunting in pain from the bullet in his stomach, and sees gunfire coming from the hatch. He unstraps the assault rifle from his shoulder and open fires on the chopper.
Like raindrops, your shots richochet off the black metal. Slowly and surely, dents form from your rapid fire weapon.

You make out the bottoms of feet being slid onboard the farside of the vehicle.

As you recoil from your attack, you notice a second chopper is moving towards the
rooftop, coming from your left side. Soon there will be twice the trouble.

Bite Fett's Shiny Metal Ass:
Frank stares at the man in his way. He looks down, his wakizashi shining in the blood stained hand. His eyes flick back and forth between the knife and the Triad's eyes. Frank's eyes then move to the two huge knives Sun is carrying.

Frank has talked many times about honour. It is one of his principles. But there is a time for honour, and a time for survival.

He bows to the Triad, kneeling down, then springs up, jumping back, his blade aimed at Sun. The moment it leaves his hand, Frank suddenly crosses his arms and unholsters both guns. Sucking in breath, he fires.
The blade is deflected to the ground harmlessly by the long knife in the left of Sun's hands. Your kidney is cleanly skewered with the blade on his right.

A crooked trail of black and red runs the length of Linh Sun's chest, neck and head. He slumps to his knees, then falling fast first to the ground.

The surprisingly short battle ends with a machete-length blade sticking out of your front and back... in equal portions.

You feel no pain, but see red blood trickling, darkening as you watch.

Echelon sees the burst of gunfire come towards the helicopter. He swings the rifle around towards the location and fires twice. It is only after the bullets hit above the man's head that he sees through the scope that his target was Roman Carvaggio.

This complicates things, he thinks.
In the confusion on the roof, you watch the two sides wage a bloody war on top of the smoldering battlesite.

Despite the violent sounds in the air, you are suddenly shaken. Your cellphone vibrates. You are well aware there is a frighteningly pateint woman waiting for you to pick up...

DIVERSIONS

Paulie looks up at where the glare came from, squinting to try to make something out. Roman? A cop? More of the Chinese fire drill? Only one way to be sure....

Paulie sprints towards the building.
Roman spots the approaching flickering shadow.

"Your employer is leaving you to die. Which, to a man in your line of work, translates to 'non-payment of funds'. Do you consider this fair recompence?"
"I've been paid in full, but from where I stand it looks like my obligations have been fulfilled. You gonna let me walk out of here alive after I killed a bunch of your men? Do you have the power to make that promise to me?"
"Oh...you've been paid? Who's gonna spend it? Your ghost? I am prepared to offer you a substantial retainer for your services."
"I am open to such an offer. As I said can you guarantee me that I will lesave alive. Who are you and what authority do you have?"
"Roman Carvaggio, head of the Capella Family. I have such power."
"Al vostro servizio, Don Carvaggio." Redman bows deeply. "I am Othello Redman. Some call me the Mad Moor. I recommend we leave quickly if we are to leave. This place is wired to blow."
"A pleasure. Now Mr. Redman...please to help me retrieve my man off this roof. I believe some of your bullets are still in him. Would you like them back?" Roman tosses Othello his assault rifle as he rushes the the roof access.

"Cover me." Roman musters all his available strenght and dives for Virgil. He snags him by the collar and yanks him down while firing at the pilots line of sight.
"We traded bullets, Don. A return is not necessary." Othello lays down cover fire for the two mobsters.

His aches begin to disappear and his vision becomes clear as the magic pill begins its work.

He silently prays that the chopper's gunner doesn't remedy that.
"Lemme go Roman! Tivoli is onboard the chopper! We need to get him. I went too far just to see him slip away, goddamnit. Look, just you cover me and I'll handle this."

Roman and Othello lay fire on the choppers, allowing Virgil enough time to make his move. The second chopper's gunner is forced to protect himself from the hay of bullets. Virgil runs as fast as he can to the edge of the roof and jumps at the chopper. For a split second, it seems like he's not gonna be able to make it, but he ultimately manages to reach it. Using only one hand to hold himself, he grabs the gunner by the leg and pulls hard, sending him hurling to the ground below. Before the pilot can react, Virgil has his gun in hand and empties the clip on him. He pushes him aside and grabs the chopper's command, intended to go after Tivoli.

"Let the fun begin"

Paulie pounds up a set of metal stairs inside the other warehouse. Crates and boxes, but no people. "Mook on the roof must be the only one," he thinks, then slows down.

The hatch leading to the roof is still openm, sunlight filtering down into the darkness.

"Okay, Oswald, you watching your back or you watching the show...."

Slowly, he pokes his head up through the hatch and looks around.
Frank tries to edge towards the door of the warehouse, stumbling desperately. He feels his kidney. It's coming. He's sure of it. He's bleeding to death.

He reaches a wall, behind a group of crates, and leans against it, falling to the ground. His left hand is still holding a gun. His right hand is resting on the knife in his midsection. He closes his eyes, and pulls. His hand is bathed in red. The pain screams. Suddenly, he hears a voice.

'Sir?'

Echelon sits crosslegged on the roof, ten feet away from the edge, the rifle at his knees, deconstructed into several parts.

He sees Paulie and looks up.

Three fatal sparks, have set the hearts of all
On Fire."*

Paulie climbs onto the roof, pistols aimed at the figure sitting near the ledge.

"Oh yeah? Well I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like them, Sam I Am! Now how's about stepping away from your toys there and tellin' me what the fuck you're doin' up here?"
"Agreed"

Echelon stands up and kicks the pile of parts, scattering them across the roof.

"My name is Echelon. No doubt you have heard of me. I was assigned to kill Don Marco. I was responsible for the first attempt on his life. I did not kill him, although the woman who arranged the situation currently considers me under her employ. Note I said 'considers.' Despite a warning given to me a long time ago, I don't like being set up. Do you?"
"Thanks for the monologue, Shakespeare," Paulie says, pistols never wavering. "You know, I oughtta end you right here and now for admittin' you had anything to do with whackin' the don." He grins. "But I've had a really shitty day thanks to this surprise party. If you got an idea who might be behind it, I might have developed a hearin' problem in my old age."

Echelon turns towards the war zone, making sure to keep his hands in sight.

"A terrible beauty is born."

"Hey, buddy, Cliff Notes for the rest of us in this conversation, okay?"
"A terrible beauty is born. Yeats wrote that about Easter Sunday, 1916, when a group of rebels, starving and outnumbered, took a stand against a tyrannical empire. They were slaughtered."

Echelon turns to the man, calm and collected.

"Men like MacDonagh and MacBride and Connolly and Pearse still fight against that same tyrannical empire today. This reminds me of the time I spent fighting with them. So. A terrible beauty is born."

He extends his hand.

"My real name is Forbes McCready. The man you seek is a woman. Her name is Lin Laoh."

Despite the adreynaline rush of your successful leap attack, you are having quite a difficult time moving the pilots body.

At first, the remains of his splattered head slumped forward, sending the chopper careening toward the walls of the ailing warehouse.

The painful scrape of the blades tapping into concrete was not a comforting sensation.

With no real knowledge of what you are doing, you instinctively pull up on the stick and back the chopper away, avoiding a fiery collision.

Smoke billows around the outside of the bulletproof cockpit. Black smoke.

A painful sting bites into Forbes' right side. Not a bullet. Once the shock of the unforseen assault wears off, he is startled to see something a bit different sticking in his ribs. Something a bit more archaic... no... elegant. Fitting somehow. A silver arrow.

Removing the dart allows for closer inspection. A series of golden letters... Chinese on the side. And the tip? Covered in blood and some pungent dark green powder.

Looking around reveals nothing. Chaingun fire is the only sound heard.

You watch Virgil's display of heroism/lunacy unfold as he slips from your grasp and leaps perilously close to the chopper blades. Miraculously, he survives the jump and tries to stabilize the chopper. (See above post).

The roof is clearing as the other two choppers have pulled up into the air, quickly moving beyond your grasp.

Frank grumbles and looks up at the fresh-faced rookie staring down at him, gazing at the hitman's false ID badge.

'You're injured, Lieutenant. We have to get you out of here.'
'I'm dead, kid. Leave me.'
'I refuse to do that, sir.'

The rookie kneels, and takes off his shirt, pressing it to Frank's kidney.

'Now sir.. this may hurt a little bit.'

Frank screams as the rookie pulls him up strong, onto his stumbling feet. The kid drags Tobiasi towards the exit, as more of his squad fire frantically at the Triads. As they emerge, several officers are pinned to the wall. The chopper sounds can be heard all around. The rookie props Frank against a wall.

'I'll get help.'
'Kid...'

The rookie runs away. Minutes later, he returns, with his Lieutenant and an ambulance crew. Nothing. All that remains is the kid's bloodstained shirt.

Frank is nowhere to be seen.

Never fuck with the Triads, boyo...

Darkness and incoherence fill McCready's skull. As he drops down to the ground, his glazed eyes look up at the man he had extended his hand in friendship to.

"Do...what...you...must..." he says. "But protect...protect my beloved...Marie Huffman. Teacher at my academy. And protect my boys. Please."

He collapses face-first onto the rooftop, still semi-concious.
"Yeah, great idea Virgil, what the fuck made you think you could pilot a chopper?"

Virgil's inability to fly the chopper gives ample time to his foes to escape. As he finally manages to stabilise the thing, they are already out of reach. He can see Palooka waving ironically at him. They won, this time. Virgil lands the chopper on the roof and gets out of it, heading towards Roman and his former ennemy, now his ally, from what it seems. He gives one final look to the other choppers, now barely visible and disappearing into the skyline. He smiles wickedly.

Vengeance, as they say, is best served cold.

Othello walks over to Virgil. "Gutsy play man. Looks like we're on the same side now." He extends a hand. "Not gonna sucker punch me again are you?"
