Classify these film characters

Ok - easy game, but one which has provoked a lot of consternation and apoplexy down at the local pub last Friday evening.

Given the following D&D alignments - classify the below film characters.

Lawful Good - Virtuous; upholding moral excellence, virtue, and righteousness

Neutral Good - Benevolent; inclined towards acts of kindness, compassion, helpfulness, and love

Chaotic Good - Visionary; concerned with great forsights/prophecies for creating a unique future

Lawful Neutral - Logical; adhering to the principles of regulated society, logic, and authority

Neutral Neutral - True Neutral; uncommitted with respect to cultural ways but upholding balance

Chaotic Neutral - loners and individualist tending toward total unpredictability and chaos

Lawful Evil - Criminal; working to undermine accepted principles of the social structure

Neutral Evil - Destructive; constantly causing upheaval and destruction through abusive ways

Chaotic Evil - Malicious; possessed of strong urges to see all life suffer and endure hardship and pain

1. The Man with no name (Clint Eastwood - various spaghetti westerns)
2. Darth Vader
3. Scorpio (Villain who starred in Dirty Harry)
4. Luke Skywalker
5. Han Solo
6. Sauron
7. Batman
8. Harry Potter
9. Boba Fett
10. Randall McMurphy

For a bonus 10 points - see if you can name more than 3 film characters who fall into the category of - CHAOTIC EVIL. (tricky)

I'll try and get to the list later. But, I can give you 3 movie characters right now that fit into the Chaotic Evil mold (not counting Scorpio)...

1. Leatherface (in fact the entire family in 'TCM')
2. The warlock (Julian Sands) in 'Warlock'
3. Chucky

We used to do stuff like this all the time!

First of all, I take issue with some of your definitions here. My takes (with the help of the D&D rules in the Baldur's Gate II game):

Lawful Good: Someone who believes in making life better for the majority through upholding the laws of society. Society prospers when the laws are respected, and therefor the most good is done.

Neutral Good: Someone who believes that upholding the good is more important than upholding the laws of society. If the needs of good can be met by obeying the laws, so be it, but fear of breaking the law should be no deterrent to upholding the good.

Chaotic Good: Someone who believes in the virtues of goodness and right, but who have little use for laws and regulations. Their own sense of right and wrong does not always coincide with the rest of society.

Lawful Neutral: Someone who believes in order and organization, regardless of whether that government operates from a desire to do good or evil. The need to maintain law and order outweighs any moral considerations.

True Neutral: Someone who believes actions are not inherently good or evil, and that all forces -- good, evil, law, and chaos -- should always been in balance. They may even switch sides in the middle of a fight if doing so maintains the balance.

Chaotic Neutral: Someone who believes there is no order to anything, even their own actions, tending to follow whatever whim strikes them at any given moment. Good and evil are irrelevant when making a decision.

Lawful Evil: Someone who believes structure and order elevate those who deserve to rule. If someone is hurt or suffers through a law that benefits a lawful evil character, so be it. Might makes right, essentially.

Neutral Evil: Someone who is primarily concerned with themselves and their own advancement. Any way to get ahead -- legal or illegal -- is acceptable.

Chaotic Evil: Someone who is motivated by the desire for personal gain and pleasure. The strong have the right to take what they want and the weak are there to be exploited.

That said:

No Name -- Chaotic Neutral. He basically does what seems right to him at the time. Sometimes, it's a good thing. Sometimes it's not. But he doesn't really stop to think about it.

Vader -- Lawful Evil. I think the fact that he belongs not only to an order (the Sith) but to a government (the Empire) makes him Lawful.

Scorpio -- Chaotic Evil. Classic serial killer motivation, killing for the sheer pleasure of it.

Luke -- Chaotic Good, then Lawful Good. The farmboy who goes off on the rescue in A New Hope is definitely Chaotic Good -- he's fighting the established government, after all. Once he restores the Jedi, I imagine he would become Lawful.

Han Solo -- Chaotic Good. Though he likes to put up a Neutral Evil front, his actions show his true nature.

Sauron -- Lawful Evil. He has the right to rule because he has the power, and seeks to impose his order on Middle Earth. Simple as that. Then again, he was part of the order that revolted against the Valar, so he may be veering into Neutral Evil territory.

Batman -- Neutral Good. He prefers to turn the villains over to the cops, but isn't above going beyond that if need be.

Harry Potter -- Chaotic Good. The fact that he breaks practically every rule at Hogwarts makes this a no-brainer.

Boba Fett -- Neutral Evil. You get the feeling he would have accepted a contract to kill Vader just as easily as he did the contract to hunt down Han.

Randall McMurphy -- Chaotic Good. Has an innate goodness but doesn't care for all the rules bologna.

And for the record, my post here indicates that I will in all likelihood never kiss a girl again....

Kudos to Agent Orange for giving this forum the kiss of life.

Whose Alignment Is It Anyway! Been a while since I played this.

1. The Man with no name (Clint Eastwood - various spaghetti westerns) - neutral good. Never too quick to rush to someone's aid, and not above letting people sway in the wind - literally.

2. Darth Vader - lawful evil. Served the Empire and the Dark Side faithfully. Until he threw the Emperor into that shaft, that is.

3. Scorpio (Villain who starred in Dirty Harry) - chaotic evil. Random, hateful, hurtful.

4. Luke Skywalker - lawful good. Paladin if there ever was one.

5. Han Solo - chaotic good. He shot first, but it was a bad guy.

6. Sauron - I'd say chaotic evil, but damn he was organized. He got Barad-Dur up and in ship-shape in no time! Lawful evil.

7. Batman - Ummmm...This is a toughie. Miller's Batman: Chaotic Good. Employed cop-killers for the greater good.

8. Harry Potter - Never read the book. LG? LN? CE?

9. Boba Fett - Neutral evil. Did what he did to make a buck, but fit into the system in a certain way.

10. Randall McMurphy - Who dis?

CE characters - excepting Scorpio upstairs: Scott Rosenberg, Simon West, Michael Bay. Just Kidding! Ha ha! Actually, no, but we're looking for characters here, not filmmakers.

I'd say - Gollum, Imhotep, and the Gemini Killer (Brad Dourif from The Exorcist 3). Yeah, thougher than you think. A lotta guys fell into the LE category, e.g. Alonzo from Training Day, Yu Law from The One.

Again, good thread.

I'll throw in a few more characters:

Vincent, from Gattaca

Roy Munson, from Kingpin

Blade

Ash

Jack Burton

Hmmm - Gollum isn't really chaotic, Imhotep IMHO would have to be lawful evil.

The Gemini Killer? Well any Brad Dourif character automatically qualifies as Chaotic Evil.

Perhaps Gollum would not be chaotic if he had not spent centuries under the influence of the ring- I consider Hobbits lawful by nature, but his behaviour - making promises and breaking them like a freshman on the prowl at university, leading them into Shelob's trap, etc., makes him chaotic IMHO.

Yeah, Imhotep may be Lawful since he wants to make himself a feudal ruler of Egypt. If he wants to destroy Earth, he's chaotic. Now Hannibal Lecter, he's chaotic.

I think there should be a whole rpg based off of this. Kind of like a faster, cooler, violent version of "The Last Action Hero"

Nah - Hannibal Lecter isn't chaotic either.

There is quite clearly method in his madness as he brings down retribution on those who break his own 'code'.

More like lawful evil if you ask me.

An individual who is chaotic evil has no master and kills at random.

Agree on Leatherface but I reckon the Warlock falls into the Lawful Evil band.

Chucky? It's that man Brad Dourif again!

However Chucky does not kill at random, he kills everybody!

Certainly evil, but what branch?

"An individual who is chaotic evil has no master and kills at random."

Hmmmm... wink
Ooh, that was evil!

I think Chaotic Evil characters have to have power. Simple killing machines are different from those who have a vision of the future where he rules and everyone else suffers. Leatherface and chucky are more instinctive when they kill. But someone like Emperor Ming knows what's he's doing and wants to enslave the galaxy. Now he might be uphold his own law but I don't think that applies when the villian creates the rules himself.

Some more contenders:

Tyler Durden
Veronica Sawyer
Shrek
Woody
Buzz Lightyear
William Wallace
Curt Henderson
Draco from "Dragonheart"
Heath Ledger in "A Knight's Tale"
Paul Bettany in "A Beautiful Mind"
Russell Crowe in "The Insider"

And I want stat blocks, this time. Let's make it...interesting.

This thread is nowhere near fucking nerdy enough. We need ability rolls and approximate HP / AC.
