Out of print RPGs, MIRC and You...

How many of you use this program to get PDF scans/OCRs of really freaking old role-playing and/or War Games? Do you use it to get newer games at all?

I use mIRC to get PDF's of exceedingly rare stuff like Space Opera and Tunnels and Trolls (the solo-play modules especially). I know people who have pretty much every d20 book there is. I also know people who get COMICS this way too (how evil is that? Nothing like kicking an industry when it's down...). Comments? Stories? Great finds you would like to share?

Not really on topic {sorry}, but...

From the surge of comic-related movies recently released, and coming out in the next few years, how is the comic industry actually "down"? From what I've heard {which admittedly isn't founded by fact, just store owners and magazine shit} there is a renewed interest in comic-books and it's growing more now than it did in the past 20 years.

Explain if you will....thanks.

Now on topic.

I really have a problem with IRC as a way to get things. I've been "on the net" for nearly fourteen years now, starting out on old Usenet and FIDONet boards through dialup BBS's, and I am actually a little intimidated by going into IRC channels and just begging for shit. I really don't have a firm grip on how it's supposed to work, and have a real issue with the legalities of it...{pot, kettle, black}...

How are you doing this, and what methods do you go about actually getting this stuff?

The comics industry, from what I understand, still continues to take a beating financially despite certain properties making their way to the screen. Dan Laugharn would be the better one to confirm this than I.

Sorry, I didn't have time until just now to answer your second post Kid Ego. I got my friend, who has been doing this for a while to teach me. It isn't terribly difficult. You will find though that leeching (i.e. DLing files W/O hosting your own) is generally frowned upon. I am setting myself up as a file server for OOP stuff ONLY. I disagree with hosting current stuff, but I am finding it quite thrilling to find these way OOP games and ressurecting them through the magic of technology. The original licence holders are either dead or not interested in defending the copyrights (especially for Space Opera), so I have no ethicla problem with it. If you want precise instructions on where to go and how to get files, e-mail me at my mike@chud.com account.

How 'bout old D&D stuff, such as Judges Guild?

If you have a decent newsreader and a good newsgroup server, go to alt.binaries.e-book.rpg. There's tons of stuff there in PDF format -- I got the original version of Skyrealms of Jorune, a couple of volumes of Grimtooth's Traps, and I've seen the entire Planescape series of box sets on there as well.
