The Creation of the Nine Worlds

Burning ice, biting flame; that is how life began

There exists a burning land called Muspelheim, a world that has always existed, and always will. It is a land brimming with heat and fire. Fire so hot that only those born into the realm can endure it.

As time began, the fiery demon known as Surt* (Surtur) sat on a blackened throne, lurking in flame as the world was born, already planning its destruction.

Across the great void called Ginnungagap, was an bitter, cold land--the frozen realm of Niflheim. Here a collossal frost Giant called Ymir rested. His icy body melted slowly, revealing mountains and rivers, man and animal, all trapped within his enormous carcass.

As time began to run, so the expanse of what was Ymir filled the great void. Ginnungagap was at last covered. Life began to creep into all of the strange new lands.

Descended from the union of men and giants, came Odin*, the Allfather. He who would rule over all. Odin and his brothers built Asgard--the great home of the gods.

From this vantage, Odin and his kin would rule over the Nine Worlds, until the coming of RAGNAROK*--the annihilation of all that is.

These Nine Worlds are interconnected, situated among the roots of the great ash tree Yggdrasil*. This tree is what gives and sustains all life in the Nine Worlds, and will survive even Ragnarok, to see the coming of the world that has yet to be.

Know ye the Nine Worlds that sit upon Yggdrasil:

1. ASGARD* - Realm of the Aesir, or warrior gods. A vast, golden plain with tall grass and bountiful woods and rivers. The utopian Viking ideal. Here lies Valhalla, the hall of the honored dead. In this place, the Einherjar (honored dead) are alive once more, battling each other in tournaments, dying and being reborn as often as the sun rises. Here these ressurected heroes wait to join the gods in the final battle.

2. VANAHEIM - Realm of the Vanir, the gentler healing and fertility gods.

3. ALFHEIM - Blessed land of the Light Elves.

4. NIDAVELLIR - Hearty land of the Dwarves.

5. MIDGARD* - The "Middle World", known to mortals of the day as "Earth". Virtually none of the race of earth-born know anything of the other worlds, but continue in the day to day struggle between their own nations. Trouble brews on Earth, a coming war that will surpass all others in its past.

6. JOTUNHEIM* - The mountainous region that is home to giants. Earthy warmth surrounds the lower tribes, while the equally fierce Frost Giants dwell in the snowy mountains. By and large, these large barbarians are deadly foes of the gods.

7. SVARTALFHEIM - Shrouded land of the Dark Elves.

8. NIFLHEIM* - Frozen land of the dead. In this realm resides the dragon Nidhogg, a collosal beast that gnaws on the corpses of the dead, as well as the lowest roots of the world tree. Situated inside Niflheim is Hel*, the realm of the dead, presided over by a woman also known as Hel (Hela), who commands the undead in her domain--the dead that passed from life as cowards, godless, or purely evil. The growing army of undead also waits for the final battle.

9. MUSPELHEIM - Land of eternal fire, home of Surt.

The Gods

The gods were led by mighty Odin*, wisest and strongest of all gods. He is both a master warrior, and father of poetry and magic. (He parallels the Greek god Zeus.) He sacrifices one of his eyes to the Well of Mimir, that he might have wisdom beyond what any other had possessed. He hung himself for nine days on the branches of Yggdrasil, to gain power over death.

He is king among even the gods, all respect his name. His servants are the Valkyres, angellic warrior-maidens that gather the honored dead and bring them to join him in Asgard. He is foremost a warrior, but also a master wizard. He can impart gifts on the worthy, curses on the unjust.

He is proud and temperamental. The affairs of mortals generally do not conern him.

Other gods of note for this campaign include:
Thor*--god of thunder, foe of giants (think Hercules)
Frey* (or Freyr)--god of fertility (think male Artemis)
Balder* (or Baldur)--god of light (think Apollo)
Tyr*--fiercest of all warrior gods (think Ares)
Heimdall*--watchmen of the gods (think a warrior Hermes)
Hel*--evil goddess of the dead (think a female Hades)
Loki*--evil god of mischief, adopted son of Odin, father of Hel (a trickster who evolved into a god of evil)

The Death of Balder
Upon the birth of her innocent and beautiful son Balder, Frigg (wife of Odin) was moved as only a mother can be to protect her child from any harm that might beset him in life.

She traveled through the Nine Worlds, patiently speaking to everything in creation, living and not alive. Each thing was made to swear an oath not to do harm to her infant son. Birds, Beasts, Fire, Steel, Ice, and Rock, and even the intangible such as Sickness... all took this oath.

All but a harmless bush of miseltoe...

As Balder grew into manhood, Loki (half-son of Odin, and half-brother to the nigh invulnerable Balder) became enraged at the immense gift Frigg had given her son.

Using his powers as a master shapeshifter, Loki took upon himself the likeness of an old woman, meeting with Frigg. After drawing the goddess into conversation, Loki garnered from Frigg the secret of the miseltoe.

Meanwhile, it had become sport among the gods to test Balder's blessing, tossing all manner of items at the kindhearted god. He laughed in good spirit as he watched their implements--pebbles, rocks, spears and clubs--bounce harmlessly off his skin. The blind god known as Hod (or Hoder) was present at one of these such games. Always jovial, Balder bid the sightless kinsmen to join in the challenge.

But sinister Loki, jealous beyond measure, rose to Hod's side. He bore with him a dart made of the innocent miseltoe, placing it into Hod's unknowing hand. Guiding the blind man's arm, Loki watched as the dart was released. The thin barb of wood shot immediately through Balder, dropping the god to the ground. The wounded son of Odin was utterly dead. The reamining gods quickly surmised the soucre of the murder, and pursued Loki in fury.

The Binding of Loki
The gods refused to stain Asgard with the blood of their evil prey. Led by Thor, the host instead set out to capture Loki and imprison him.

The shapeshifting god proved to be a difficult quarry, but eventually, the persistence of his hunters was his undoing. While attempting to flee into a stream in the form of a fish, Loki was snatched form the water by Thor's unyielding grasp.

At last, the miscreant would be punished. Thor and his companions took Loki out of Asgard into Midgard, the realm of man. Deep within a hidden mountain cave, they bound him to a rock. Above Loki's head, they bound the most poisonous snake in creation to a stalactite.

As the acidic venom dripped, it would strike Loki's face, stinging the god painfully for all time. The gods left him to his fate, allowing Loki's faithful wife, Sigyn, to remain with him. She has spent the centuries catching the falling poision in a bowl, pausing only to empty it. As she does, the missed drops strike the bound god, causing him to trembling in anguish... and the earth shakes with him.

In this manner, Loki shall remain bound until the time of Ragnarok.
