Okay, we should try to get one of these going sometime. Preferably Star Wars.

I'm pretty much a beginner in the world of RPG, but I'd dig doing this.

How would we do it online?

I dunno, somebody said it was possible. Chat, maybe?

"Wow, look at that, another natural 20! Man, I'm hot tonight!" wink

Seriously, there's a website called WebRPG that uses Java to let you play RPGs online, complete with dice rolling and everything. I checked it out once a few years ago, don't know how good it is now, but it might be what you're looking for.

You can play online with a program as simple as Instant Messenger, as long as you're playing with people you trust not to fudge their die-rolls. I did this for a long time until I found a program called GRIP, which is similar to WebRPG, but which I find is superior in every way.

I've been DMing D&D 3e on GRIP since October 2000, and it's a fantastic program. Even better, the player half of the program is free, and you get a 60 day free trial of the GM half, after which you pay a one-time fee of 40 bucks. This is different than WebRPG and other programs like this, where you usually pay a monthly fee.

Anyway, I'd be down with helping set up a CHUD online roleplaying group. I think it'd be fun to play some Star Wars with some diehard fans. I own the Revised Core Rulebook, am familiar with the rules, and I've been playing RPG's since '87.

If anyone wants to take a look at GRIP, check out www.rpgrealms.com and go to their downloads page.

Rereading my message, I just realized I come across as a shill for the GRIP program.

I'm not.

Just for the record.

I role-played online for a few years (with General Logan no less!) in a chat room. It was more a matter of ego and who would be honest and realistic. No die rolls. No neutral sides, really. Basically just converstation between characters (and people just shotting the shit), various Highlander/Vampire/Every other fucking thing spinoff characters and plot lines, and stupid battles that were "moderated" by the site owners, who had loyal followings that strangely "rose to power" in character.

I tried e-mail roleplaying, but tis a lengthy and too hard to manage affair.

The best thing would be an ICQ/AIM type thing with honest die rolls (or someone else, the GM perhaps, rolling for you).

As far as free online stuff goes.

When I was living in the South a few years ago, I used to use WebRPG to play AD&D with my buddies back home. It works quite well.

Well, I guess we could always take a crack at a multiplayer on-line game...Diablo 2, Dungeon Siege, Icewind Dale, or somesuch...

Get Roger Wilco.

not tried dungeon siege yet... try to keep my addictions to a minimum.

Diablo and the like isn't a good option. Diablo after running through the initial storyline becomes a ongoing treasure hunt and can be very tedious.

something along these lines would be best found with the MMORPG games out there like EverQuest and Asheron's Call.

An irc-based game can be a lot of fun. I've played with my mates before doing this. The rolls of course were a matter of trust.

Anyone love making characters as much/more than the actual gaming?
