Oldie but goodie...DEEP RISING

Just acquired and viewed this gem, and I love it like the whore that it is. So much better than that other piece of tripe by Sommers known as 'The Mummy' I could not even believe it.

Cliched, ripped-off, and formulaic, it still somehow ends up a gorgeous piece of B-list movie making.

Thoughts?

GREAT MOVIE. I have an ANNUAL "Deep Rising" party where we watch the flick and have a terrific time while doing so.

Actually, we're about due for the 2nd event.

Maybe I should get cracking... or KRAKEN in this case.
Yeah, saw it again in Sabah a few days ago in a hotel. You hit the nail right on the head when you said it was cliched...contrived even but it moves along as if it knows all this. It probably does. Fun and a lil nuts. True B movie.

In some ways, its like an HK movie. Characters are larger than life and they do the most damnable things.

Cool. Oh, and it has Famke.

And a big ol' Cthulhu-god, too...I loved it. It made me go out and rent THE RELIC when I was done.
Yep, right again. The Relic makes the perfect companion piece for Deep Rising. The same kind of structure, if you think about it.

Gory and with the right kind of cheese. Loved it when the cop buys it in a big way while scrambling off the skylight. Heh heh. You know which one. Predictable scene but loved it anyways.

My man, Davis. Good on ya.

The key scene for me in THE RELIC is when the dog's master gets kibbled in the sub-sewer, and then the dog BOWS in fear and supplication to the shadow of the beast.

Bows! Now that's writing for you!
Oh yeah, I remember that part. Right again. Hey, whats this about you being right all day, huh?

There were quite a few other scenes as well, while maybe not equalling the creativity and depth of THAT scene, had that WOW factored in as well. The beast going up the stairs in a sudden burst of speed... I have to go get that DVD now. Damn.

Anymore faves?

What a great movie. I remember the first time i saw it. I was with my brother (he was 14)and i was trying to get him into horror movies and heavy metal (my parents are still pissed)and i thought this looked cool. The half-digested mercenary scene scared the shit out of the both of us. All the way home we kept trying to think of worse ways to die. "They don't eat you, they drink you" Damn what a great line. And a great movie. I want a special edition dammit!!

I want a special edition Famke is what I want.

Oh, and my favorite part of DEEP RISING (aside from the psuedo-porn title) and Savant Jon's favorite part as well, was when the beast is first truly revealed, behind the smarmy guy, and it drips goo on his shoulder and he turns around and sees it, and screams like a little girls and...of all things...SLAPS it.

While holding a machine gun in his other hand.

I love this film.
I haven't seen it in a long time, but I do recall liking it a lot. I too need to rent or buy the DVD soon.

But my all time favorite underwater monster movie is still Leviathan...
I have angered people with my love for Deep Rising.

It is the kind of film I would make wee I in the biz.

Treat Williams is great in the Bruce Campbell role (it's so obvious).

And Famke is wonderful in the Claire Forlani role (and I'm not lying).

The CGI effects are really good for their time (in four years we've come a long way) and it's shot with pitch-perfect precision.

And it KNOWS...oh yes, it KNOWS it's cliched...

And it LOVES it-and so do I.
Big problem for me with Deep Rising - and also the Mummy - is a lot of supposed to be funny, but only stupid, jokes. Most of them originated with or around the annoying fella who is supposed to provide comic relief in both films.

One difference. It worked in Deep Rising, it didn't in The Mummy.
I thought the Mummy worked. For the SAME reasons Deep Risig worked.

INTENTIONALLY CHEESE-BALL humor in the Evil Dead vein.

And the fact that they are both-despite the squishier moments-WHIMSICAL throwbacks to old fashioned genre filmmaking-albeit with over-inflated senses of self-without an over-inflated sense of worth.

Meaning that the both films KNOW that they are ripping, demented cheez-fests, but aspire to be nothing more.

Sometimes we don't need to save the world with cinema-sometimes we just need to feel good.
And Kev O'Connor is hilarious in both films.

"Your strength gives ME strength..."

"Peanut."

"Peanut?"

"PEANUT!"

Drip!
If I had seen Deep Rising before I saw the Mummy I would have liked teh Mummy a lot more. I was just expecting bigger, more serious moviemaking.

But I have to admit that I love Deep Rising, sat up and watched it on cable one night knowing nothing about and laughed so hard a few times I almost puked. It's a cool movie that can make you laugh and jump within seconds of each other.

The only thing that sucks about this film is there isn't a sequel (it needs one). And that the DVD doesn't even have SCENE SELECTIONS, let alone any extras.

It does need a sequel, and this will not happen. If for no other reason than Famke's rising star. Treat and O'Connor would probably jump at the chance.
But the again, since Sommers is such a biggie now, they all might jump at the chance to do it again if he wants it. Provided, of course, that Sommers retains the sensibilities he had during Deep Rising.

Wow. I thought this was a horrible film. I walked out of the theater just as soon as they started up the wetbikes. Caught it on canle later...did like the ending where they washed up on Mysterious Island. I didn't like the creature effects at all...very hokey. Bad acting, stupid jokes.
Rather than start a new thread, I found this old one. Anyway, saw this film for the first time last night/early this morning and boy was it a CHEESY FUN FLICK!

I really enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.
Phreak, I remember seeing this on opening week at what that time was United Artists cinemas in front of Gwinnett Place Mall. Somehow my brother and I dragged our mother to see this and needless to say we all had a great time. To this day I can't understand why she liked this film and From Dusk Till Dawn not that I'd complain about that. Like Treat's character this one ages like fine wine. It's the ultimate monster popcorn flick and due for a replay at my home soon.
This was the thread that convinced me to watch this movie. I had always written it off as one of many lame "Alien" clones but man was I wrong. I ended up buying the disc shortly after my first viewing. I've been meaning to give this one another viewing, it's the best way I can think of to pay my respects to the late Trevor Goddard.

That's the main reason I rented this. The only film I had seen him in was Mortal Kombat. I had heard so much about Deep Rising that when I went to knock it to the front of my Netflix queue, I was surprised that I had not even added it there. So, I added to the top and it arrived a few days later. Glad I decided to finally watch it.
This movie is great fun. Deep Rising and Surf Ninjas are my two favorite bad movies of all time.
Can I cast my vote for "Oldie-but-SUCKY"?!?

I suppose this movie is fun...but in a so-bad-it's-good way. I don't think there's anything intentionally entertaining in this film. But it's fun to laugh AT--not with.
I'm of the opinion that this is pretty much the greatest movie ever made.
Sommers knew the movie he was making, and so did the cast. If you think you're lauging at the movie you're not.. you ARE laughing with it.

"I don't want to sound like a pussy or nuthin'... but this shit is really startin' to FREAK ME OUT!"

or

"I think she broke my nose..."

"Not like anyone would notice."

"Where is THIS coming from...?!"

or

"Cock me!"

This thread will rising up from the depths of the South China Sea like a mutant Ottoia, I watched this flick for the first time and had a terrific time.

Everyone in this knows exactly the kind of film they’re making, from Treat Williams (who deserves a better career, but thats a story for another time) who plays Finnegan as Harrison Ford by way of Harrison Ford, to a never-weaslier Anthony Heald.

The mercs are all gold, with all of them getting a moment to shine. My favourite scene might be Wes Studi’s death, which Mr Oliver offered some prose for a few years ago

Love for Deep Rising.  It's been too damn long.  Plus:  the great Rob Bottin designed the creature.

Deep Rising is the better Alien: Resurrection

Saw this in the theater when it came out. I was the one.

You were not alone.  I'm pretty sure I went to see this for my birthday the year it came out.  Needless to say my friends and I had an absolute blast.  Deep Rising was a damn good birthday present!

I want a Bluray of this fucker stat. Such a fun movie, my friend who introduced it to me has a big group showing at least every couple of years. it's always a blast.

100% agreed.  How is this not on Blu-ray, but Another Stakeout is?

I haven't seen Deep Rising in a while, but I am a fan of the movie.

My LOVE for this flick and desire for a sequel (besides 6 seasons of LOST) knows no bounds.
