I recently saw this for the first time because it was a Best Picture winner. And I have to say I wasn't overly impressed. I mean, its very Academy friendly, but I didn't see the point. It was a fine romance set against the war with a very literary feel to it. But that was one of its weakness IMO. Too many of the elements and characters never seemed to fit. They seemed like book characters who they didn't have time to flesh out in the film version.

What's the CHUD opinion? I think its a great looking but just okay film that dominated a really weak year for film.

It did suck - totally pretentious - but I remember Frederick Forsythe wrote a really funny article, something like 'Why I Hate The English Patient.' Really funny.

Hate this movie with an undying passion.....but absolutely love Talented Mr. Ripley. Is there a cure for this?

And if you've read that damn Oprah Book Club shoulda been, then you know there is a large chance of an English Patient repeat.....
