I never got to see this, and there are no reviews on CHUD that I could find. Sucks? Rules? Batman and Robin? Advise me, people.

Okay - where do I start?

Plus points:

1. Excellent performance (as usual) by Depp.
2. Fair support from British ensemble.
3. Reasonably accurate.
4. Convincing set designs.

Minus points:

1. Heather Graham - oh dear.
2. Where the story veers away from actual events - it REALLY veers away.
3. Excessively graphic (stomach churning at several points)
4. Pacing problems.

To be honest, I didn't like the film at all. Mainly this was due to the excessive gore which should have been left more to the imagination and probably would have been by more talented directors.

I was told that the comic book from which it's based was MUCH better than the movie. (of course) So, anyone who has read it them that can comment on this?

Or at least point to a thread where this was discussed?

I own the graphic novel and, yeah, I liked it better than the movie.

The movie centers around the investigator and his hunt for The Ripper. Pretty boring "who dunnit?" if I ever saw one.

In the comic, we know who the killer is the entire time, but it's the uncovering of his motives that is the main point of the story. I think if they'd gone this route, you'd have seen a much more interesting film, but perhaps not as much an "audience friendly" one, which is probably why they went with the boring ol' who dunnit.

I highly recommend picking up the graphic novel. It's pretty readily available at Barnes and Noble, Borders and Amazon ever since the movie came out. It's a good read and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Thanks. I appreciate it.

The film should have a credit stating "NOT based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell". Seriously.

The graphic novel is simply stunning. The movie is nowhere near as intricate and moving, but it's still a passable two hours.

Actually I think From Hell is very worth checking out. I think it was one of the better films of last year (some flaws aside) and is sure to be rediscovered as a cult film. To adapt the graphic novel (which is something like 800 pages) into a 2-hour movie was nearly impossible but they did a very honorable job with several sequences storyboarded directly from the novel. It was an incredibly layered film that rewards repeat viewings. It's the JFK of Jack the Ripper films and the two-disc set looks great.

I agree with dolarhyde. The movie was overhated.

I really liked the graphic novel and realize that it would have been impossible to do a literal translation. That said, the Hughes Brothers did a good job at making a good, violent movie with "From Hell" as a loose framework.

I haven't seen the film yet. But I'd heard by some reviewers (I think Harry said this) that the movie wasn't really violent or graphic enough. That it got boring.

I definitely plan on watching this movie someday. Hughes Brothers interest me.

It wasnt the greatest movie I've ever seen, but I stil enjoyed it.

It's a good and enjoyable Jack the Ripper movie. But if you want to see still to date the best Ripper movie, then check out Jack the Ripper, the CBS mini-series starring Michael Caine. I know it plays on cable quite regularly and I think it's available on at least tape.

The book is amazing.

FUCK that movie.

Awful film. Heather Graham should never be allowed to appear in a film again. I say appear because she clearly can't act. I think they took too many loberties with the story and linked together theories that shouldn't have been linked together. I also dislike that they gave Jack the ripper a "face." It's the not knowing who he was that makes the story interesting.

Were Boogie Nights and Drugstore Cowboy simply anomallies in the Heather Graham ouvre? Seriously. She was great in those movies. Why does she stink in everything else. I heard a clip of her talking on Howard Stern and she was commenting on her english accent and she said, and I quote, " I worked really alot on it."
