A Shot at Glory

Probably none of you have heard about this film, as it was filmed WAAAAYY back in 1999 before CHUD launched and it is now getting a very limited release.

Well, I went to see it last night in a suburb of Atlanta (in the last place I expected it to be showing) and it turned out to a good little movie. I give it a 7.5 out of 10.

I first read about it here at Upcoming Movies when it was shopped around to the festivals. The guy that runs that site got to see it at the 2000 Toronto Film Festival and gave it 3 out of 4 stars, but it never got picked up...until now.

Plot synopsis:

Coach Gordon McLeod (Robert DuVall) leads a scrappy soccer team of misfits from the tiny fishing village of Kilnockie, vying for the Scottish Cup, led by the recently-acquired star punter, Jackie McQuillan (Ex-pro Scottish footballer Ally McCoist). There's friction in the air as Jackie is married to McLeod's daughter, which is something that McLeod has been against. The season the film follows is especially important, as the team's American owner (Michael Keaton) may move the team to Dublin if they don't win the Cup. (Upcoming Movies)

The film was directed by Michael Corrente (Outside Providence, American Buffalo) and has lots of great soccer action and Duvall does a pretty mean Scottish accent. The movie also features Brian Cox and Cole Hauser. It has a really good story and Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits does the soundtrack.

I suggest you check this one out if it happens to be playing in your area. If you happen to miss, I suggest you check it out when it comes out on VHS/DVD.

Here's links to important stuff regarding the film:

I haven't heard of this, but it's great to know that Michael Keaton has been doing something these last few years.

I saw the poster for this movie at my local Regal a few nights ago and was completely confused by it. I hadn't heard of any Duval movies coming out. This explains things, thanks. I'd forgotten to look up the movie. Destined to be missed, I guess. This movie going after some of that The Rookie action maybe?
