the real A Simple Plan thread

Who loves this movie? Not only do I think this is Sam Raimi's best film, it's also my personal favorite Raimi flick (yup, over Army of Darkness, over Evil Dead 2... yes, yes, and yes). This film got little love when it was released, which is sad. It's such a brilliant film filled with great characters, great acting, great writing, and, of course, great directing. The film is one of the tightest, most suspensful thrillers ever, one that rivals Hitchcock's best.

Give it up.

A little love? I remember a lot of critics thinking it was the greatest thing since the thighmaster.

I liked it myself, Smith's original story was good, but nothing sublime.

It got little love from the rest of the world. I don't know a soul who's seen it.

I rented it (Raimi AND Paxton? Had to be good!), and found that while the script was terrific, and the acting was brilliant, I just couldn't get into it, mainly because the characters were essentially idiot morons who were extremely unlikable; my gf said 'this sucks' and went to bed at ~45 min in; I said I'd give it a full hour......

And in those 15 minutes, the movie started to cook; the plot tightened up, and you started getting, if not sympathy for the characters, a tremendous interest in seeing what the fuck else was going to go wrong.

And Billy Bob's death at the end is fucking heartbreaking.

Brilliant flick - now if we could only get people to watch Traveller and For Love of the Game. wink

You know what's really heartbreaking?

Hank's original end in the book. Fucking sad and disturbing as hell.

Haven't seen the film, but read the novel several years ago. Great read.

My review from when it hit theaters: http://www.chud.com/reviews/simpleplan.php3

Love the flick. Own the dvd. Raimi is subdued and confident, and the performances are spot-on.

I think this is a fine example of Raimi's maturation from being kinetically clever and a bit over-the-top to a master scenarist;

Am I the only person who thought For Love of the Game was one of the better romances (not romantic comedy) in the past few years?

"Sam was very vocal about his motivations for taking on the film adaptation of Scott Smith's bestselling novel, 'A Simple Plan'.

He needed to prove to Hollywood - and maybe to himself - that he could direct a character-driven film. He needed to prove that he could elicit performances of alternating grace and intensity from his leads, and he needed to illustrate that, beyond a shadow of a doubt, he could tell a story behind the camera - not necessarily with it."

[QB]Bridget Fonda does great, great work in this movie. The pregnant woman as schemer and opportunist provides such a nice contrast to Fargo's pregnant woman as voice of sanity and truth.

And as evil as she was in the film (and she was evil) she was 10 times that in the novel. I got chills from the passages with her character directing the action and tellinh Hank what to do.

Love the movie, I bought the DVD just so I could let my friends borrow it so they would know the film. I always meant to get around to reading the book, but I dont have time to. Could anyone sum up the differences for me?

No.

I figured I'd have to get my lazy ass up and read it.
