Jesus's Son

I just finished watching this.

Great movie. Billy Crudup did an amazing job portraying an addict. Brutally honest in its depiction of drug abuse, the movie did come across kinda heavy. But I really enjoyed the love story aspect between Cruddup and Morton. Their scenes together were awesome. Especially when they were lying in bed pretending it was the first time they met.

I gotta admit I'm a little confused about some parts of the ending, but I'm already itching to see it again and figure it out.

What's the consensus on this flick?

Check out the book by Denis Johnson. Powerful stuff. The guy's a hell of a writer.

I just wondered about him sticking his hand through the window and touching the menonite woman.

Still loved it, though, and look forward to digesting it better with repeat viewings.

You know, I saw the film with the director and Crudup and they said something specific about that scene, I can't remember exactly what though. My brain is fried. But there's a magical, mystical sort of quality to the book I think and they wanted to capture a piece of that. And I think they wanted to show him finally getting a chance to reach out and touch someone, find a little solace, a little peace in humanity.

Read the book hester. It's a quick little read but chock full. I saw Denis Johnson read the first story from it about a year ago and I was blown away.

It's been a while since I saw this and I haven't read the book, but I thought I would add:

I love the hospital scenes with Jack Black, particularly the usage of the guitar solo from Neil Young's "Cowgirl in the Sand" in the one drug induced scene. Inspired.

AND, I have a VHS copy of Alison McLean's short film Kitchen Sink which is excellent. Many of you chewers would love this, I think. Anyone familiar with it?

Saw this flick at a screening in Atlanta before it opened for a very short time at one of the artsy theaters.

I really enjoyed it, though it is kind of a sad flick. Have always liked Crudup, ever since I saw him in Without Limits.

You cannot beat Jack Black in his supporting role though. I especially love the scenes of his with Crudup in the truck and also the scene in the hospital where he is squatting and complaining about the shoes.

Read the book in one sitting this weekend. Pretty damn good.

I actually prefer a few of the liberties the filmmaker made when adapting it. I like that Michelle was expanded and fuckhead was the one who slept through her suicide and not John Smith.

When Johnson submitted the first story of the book to the New Yorker, they said they'd publish it if he took out the last line. He refused and of course published elsewhere. When I saw him read, he told that story and said something about being idealistic, saying today, he'd just change it and take the $.
