Neutered and Spayed

Nope, this ain't a thread about the collosal hit Cats and Dogs.

Right now, it's my weekend. Just sitting back in on the couch partially naked and browsing through some extra features on a few of the dvd's in my posession.

I haven't seen any mention of this topic since becoming a chud member (last november). And was curious if any of you had any favorite scenes that were exorcised from the theatrical version of any movie but later added on dvd/bootleg/vhs either as a deleted scene, added in via seamless branching /extended cut, or put back in as the definitive directors cut.

If you have any in mind that you like, offer your explanation as to why it's your favorite...and why it should've remained in the theatrical version regardless of pacing or time related issues.

Here are some obvious choices for starters:

The radio show scene in "Untitled". This was a fun little moment in the movie that also added to the relationship between Jason Lee and Billy Crudups characters. With a cameo by Kyle Gass. Hilarious stuff. It makes me wonder though, what did Neil Young say or do when he was in a similar situation.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Rented the movie via netflix a week ago and checked out the extended version. I liked the scene where Reese appears in Sarah's dream warning her about their son. Then he leaves the cell she's in after giving her a kiss. She follows only to appear in the playground witnessing the children being nuked. Dark and haunting moment that should've remained in the theatrical version.

A deleted scene on the Vista series of Unbreakable is another favorite. I don't know why it was cut out of the movie or where chronologically it fit...but it's the one where the boy (who grows up to be Samuel L) goes on board the Tilt-A-Whirl. Even as a deleted scene it really had an impact because you know something bad was going to come of it, and something did. Never have I gone "oh no" in a movie; to feel for any character and be afraid for him.

Those are 3 particular scenes that come to mind. I'm sure there are more out there. Dive on in with your own...

I love the Almost Famous scene in Untitled where Jeff and Russell talk about their relationship and decide they don't really hate each other, but it's good for the band. Great scene that should have been back in. Most of the stuff in Untitled is a bit too self-indulgent, and overall, I prefer the theatrical cut, although why the aforementioned scene was cut, I'll never know.

Also, the 'Qui-Gon discovers probe droid' scene in TPM should have stayed.

There was a very funny sequence from Zoolander that I would have liked to have seen in the final cut. Instead of forcing the audience to listen to quite so much of the weepy Wallflowers song after Derek loses, this version has several more laughs while he's talking to his reflection in the puddle. Then he marches off to Moomba with great determination, where he has to gain access to a series of increasingly tinier and more exclusive rooms, until he finds Hansel with Winona Ryder and delivers a comeback to the insult from half an hour before. Then he gets himself literally thrown out of the club.
I thought this sequence was hilarious, and removing it made the limp you see in the next scene senseless. I know it's just a comedy, but it added a lot to explain Derek's frustration with his position in the modeling industry and it would have given the film more momentum.

I also love the deleted scene from Donnie Darko in which Donnie has a heart-to-heart with his Dad, but I can understand why it was taken out.

There is a cut scene from Austin Powers that I absolutely loved - after the henchman gets run over by the steamroller, his wife explains to his step-son that he's dead. That was so great because we never think of the evil henchman's family

That's interesting. It's one of my favourite scenes, but it was also present in the theatrical and DVD releases I saw. I'm not sure if that's just the UK cut or not.

"But mom, since dad died, Sid's been like a father to me!"

Incidentally, the mom in that scene is ex-007 girl Lois Chiles, who played Holly Goodhead in Moonraker

Yeah, just checked IMDB and it mentions that this and another funny henchman backstory were not included in the US cut. So was this one in the UK/European cut?

A couple of guys are sitting at Hooters waiting for Bob (the henchman who got his head eaten off by an ill-tempered sea bass) for a surprise bachelor party. One of them gets a phone call and he finds out that Bob's dead.

A scene from "Charlie's Angels" when Bosley meets Tim Curry's character for the first time. In the movie, they go straight to wrestling in the Sumo outfits. In the cut scene, they go to a pool and play "Marco Polo" before that. It's pretty funny.

In "Harry Potter" (and I think someone mentioned this elsewhere), they find out who someone is based off the chocolate frog card, instead of Hermoine "finding" it in a book.

Previously mentioned movies, different deleted scenes:

There's a little conversation that Russell and William have in Almost Famous: Untitled right before Stillwater takes the stage. They're talking about a Marvin Gaye song and the little one-time bits that make or break a song (the "rewind parts" as a friend of mine calls them). It captures my thoughts perfectly on good songwriting and performance. It also shows some insight into Russell's songwriting and the fact that he listens to ALL kinds of music, as the best musicians tend to do.

The whole Watership Down subplot in Donnie Darko was excellent. Actually, nearly everything excised from that movie adds to it.

Yup, that was in there too. The guy who answered the phone in Hooters was Rob Lowe.

I think a lot of the Russell/Jeff stuff from Untitled should have definately been in the theatrical cut. I think the Untitled cut as it is drags too much, but there is definately some gold stuff in there.

thread has died somewhat, but why not go sweet then sour and now start listing scene's you were glad never made it into the theatrical release of some movies available today...

One pick, would be from the Die Hard 5 Star disc...it featured the slimy reporter interviewing John McClane's off-spring. Those kids were just wretched. Almost as cringe inducing as that astronauts kids in Contact.

I wish some of the extra footage from the pod race had been left in Episode I. I know people think it's pretty long already, but there were some great scenes of Anakin responding to mishaps with his speeder that really highlighted what a great instinctive pilot he was supposed to be.
