What is so great about "A Beautiful Mind"?

Since the movie is coming out on DVD I would like to know the deal about it. I seen it and I thought it was not bad it was well made but the hype about it being "FANTASTIC" to me is bull! Now, I am not turning this movie down because Russell Crowe is in it I thought he was good in it but he was not (again) "FANTASTIC". So tell me, am I missing something?

First, Crowe is FANTASTIC. He becomes the character.

Second, it's got a great supporting cast.

Third, it's one of the best mind-fuck movies out there.

Answer: nothing.

Fourth, even though the score is derivative of his previous work, especially "Searching For Bobby Fisher," James Horner knocks another one out of the park.

I can't believe I just said that. I'm such a soundtrack freak.

Is this movie better than "THE INSIDER"?

No.

"You pay me to get guys like Wigand, to draw them out. I do. He sits. He talks. He violates his own fuckin' confidentiality agreement. And he's only the key witness in the biggest corporate malfesance case in U.S. History. And Jeffery Wigand, who's out on a limb, does he go on television and tell the truth? Yes. Is it newsworthy? Yes. Are we gonna air it? Of course not! Why? Because he's not telling the truth? No! Because he is telling the truth, and the more truth he tells, the worse it gets!"

One thing I noticed about this film...

The microphone sound boom thingy is clearly visible in several key scenes (when he's talking to his wife when they're dining outside, when he's talking to his department head, trying to persuade him to give him his job back).

Once I started noticing it, I just couldn't stop.

So while I did enjoy it, and I do think Crowe is awesome, I would quibble slightly with the notion that it's "well-made". You'd think someone would have caught that stuff.

This topic should be in the Films in Release or on Video Forum.

What is so great?

Well, Howard was able to restrain himself after the train-wreck of a cinematic ass-raping that was The Grinch. And that's about it.

That's totally a question of projectionist incompetence. Next time you see mikes, tell the theater people that they have the print framed wrong, and if any of the have triple digit IQ's they might understand what you're talking about.

The movie itself? Like Nick said, don't hate it because it won an award, it's fine for what it is. I mean it's not the kind of movie that makes you want to make movies, but it's fine.

Uh, no, I was showing why the Insider is better than A Beautiful Mind.

Eh. I found the whole performance pretty cliched. If he wasn't tilting his head to the side, he was rubbing his knuckles against his forehead. He might as well have been wearing a sign reading "WARNING: ACTOR WORKING FOR OSCAR."
