Did anyone see "The Majestic"?

The movie is coming to DVD soon an I was wondering if anyone saw it...and what did you think of it. I heard that Jim Carrey was freaky acting....romantic. Strange!

It was my favorite film of last year. Darabont made his Capra film with this one, and like Capra, The Majestic made me feel all warm and soft inside. Excellent film.

It's either just come out in the UK, or is coming out soon. If I get the chance, I want to check it out because it looks like it'll give me the same warm dose of cinema-love that I get from "Matinee", one of the greatest love letters to the movies ever. And I prefer Jim Carrey when he's doing this sort of thing.

I want to see it bad, I didn't catch it when it was in the theaters and I will when it comes out on DVD.

Jim Carrey rules.

Steve's reviewing the DVD this week. It was a lot better than people said it was.

It looked pretty pants in the trailer. Sort of like a whole movie of Jim Carry saying, "Screw me over for Man of the Moon, will you Academy? Well, I'm going to win THIS time, damnit!" I haven't seen it, so I can't really comment (hell, I might like it), but from the trailers, it seemed pretty mediocre.

The movie was good, not great. I found the performance in question to just be an attempt to recall the spirit of Capra with a touch of Stewart, who Carrey always said he looked up to. It was sort of a dream role for him that somewhat succeeded. Shoot, I take that back. It aimed for syrupy and delivered just that. On that level, it was a complete success.

It's a movie for people who love going to the movies.

3+ hours of pure boredom.
What? Were you bored before the 2 hour 20 minute film began? Is that how you got over 3 hours of boredom out of it?

I love Jim Carrey. I love Frank Darabont. I love going to movies. I want to see this bad.

It's far too sugar-coated at times, and it tries to be too many things at once when they throw in the Communist stuff. But as a movie lover there are some undeniably good things about it. Jim Carrey is really good. This proved to me that he really is a good actor and not just a comedian with a few quirky dramatic performances. The overall theme of love and the power of mvoies should be good for everyone, and there are some moments that really do hit you right in the heart.

Not as bad as reviews made it seem, but definitely not for the cynical and skeptical.

Dear god man, hit it on the head.

If you hate the movie, nothing wrong with that. If you love it, congrats to you. But every person on this board that claims to really love "going to the movies" should be able to relate to one scene.

The moment where Martin Landau describes what the experience of going to the movies is. This scene brought tears to my eyes. Just as Sixpack said, you can't watch this scene and walk away unaffected. Unless you have no soul or are truly just a harsh cave-dwelling critic who avoids the light at all costs.

Okay, that is coming off a bit strong, for something that is my opinion. But does anyone agree? Anyone feel the same way?

I completely agree. I thought the film was fantastic all around. This may anger some but I feel any problems people had with the movie were their own and not the film's. It truly requires you to give yourself over to it and to accept the situations and the dialogues and COMPLETELY abandon any of the cynicism (sp?) or skepticism that is really part of our everyday lives.

And from what I've heard, it features the greatest "film within a film" since Mant! Bruce Campbell in Sand Pirates Of The Sahara? That alone sounds like it'll be worth the rental fee.

It's one of those highly flawed films that you can still get some joy out of. The Martin Landau scene is truly wonderful. If you hate the movie, I don't see how movie lovers wouldn't still just love the hell out of his scene about going to the movies. When the film deals with the therapeutic and bonding experiences we can have in the theater, its really touching.

In other ways its more akin to Tony's simple description.

I'm gonna pick it up.

As you all know, I'm a diehard fan of Carrey's work, but this one left me underwhelmed, and I'm interested in seeing it again.

The Landau scene was great, but the rest of the movie was just so godawful...

It's actually a flesh-colored Q-Tip...

It's borderline ... it's not YET on video, and it's not in RELEASE any longer. But that's feeling like the right thread...
