Spielberg lays the smack down on De Bont

I never knew how little work a fella had to do to get producer's credit, until now:

This is a quote from the London Telegraph (found at www.telegraph.co.uk but ya gotta register):

"Minority Report was originally brought to Spielberg by Cruise, who discovered an early adaptation of the story while filming Eyes Wide Shut. Although the project had been around for at least a decade, and at one time was to have been produced and directed by Jan de Bont (director of Speed) Spielberg made it his own and brought in his own screenwriter to develop it.

To Spielberg's irritation, the credits still list de Bont as one of the producers. "Jan never saw the movie," he says, "never visited the set and never did any work on it at all. He simply had it in his deal that he was the producer. This is the whole thing about Hollywood deal-making - if somebody has a deal to be a producer, he doesn't have to show up, he just gets his name on the screen."

That's showbiz, I guess...

I've been wondering about this ever since I saw his name in the credits on the trailer. It just didn't make sense that you could crap out The Haunting, then just squeeze in producing an intelligent and well-made sci-fi drama, before getting stuck into Tomb Raider 2.

Trust me, people get producer's credit for everything.

In fact I will venture to say that Spielberg mainly got Exec. Producer credit for MIB2 because he was simply lending his name. Granted he may have visited the set but I think he had little to no say at all. Here, for you future filmmakers, is yet another reason to hate (but in front love) producers. They want credit for nothing. Granted not all are like this and there are many who are actually giving you the money for your film but they do get royalities for nothing. It is simply a wild world the film business. It doesn't work like any other industry and any other kind of business. Cept the brown nosing.
