Spider-Man Discussion

Okay. I've caught the HBO making of and the MTV movie special all within a good ten hours of each other. My anticipation is beginning to wave slightly, after from what I've heard of the crap Aerosmith song, the autopilot Danny Elfman score, and the green goblin costume. What makes it wave here, however is the presence of MaGuire yelling "wheee!" in some of the footage. It makes me wonder....

Rest assured, I'm not setting myself up to hate this film. It's still on my "most anticipated" summer movie list and the giant Spider-Man currently scaling the Loew's 42nd street theater here in NYC is great and gets me massively pumped up about the film.

So, has anyone seen it yet? Basically Nick or anyone else like that who would be in a position to. And has anyone else caught these preview thingies on television and what are your thoughts? Fire away.

OK, just a little request to anyone who posts anywhere on this board about Spidey. Please put spoiler warnings. It's not out til June here, so I'm gonna have to avoid a few topics, but if anyone throws out a post on it in and around, please put a warning. Thanks.

Am catching it midnight tomorrow if the girlfriend manages the tricky 'book the ticket' bit. If all goes well, maybe I'll spin a little non-sticky tale.

If it does get sticky, though, rest assured it musta made me real happy.

I was kinda vaguely interested in this flick because it was Sam Raimi...I'm not a Spidey fan. I don't DISLIKE the guy, I just never really got into him. The initial trailers didn't help, what with AniSpidey looking a little rough in the quirky grace department, much like a few of the AniBlades in BladeII. The latter didn't really bother me cause it was only a seconds or two here & there, but Spiderman's gonna be chocked full of them.
The recent TV spots, however, have changed that. They're polished, especially that last shot of him hanging out on a pole.
And while I've always liked Dunst, it wasn't from an eyecandy factor. As a redhead, though...she's breath taking. That is the PERFECT shade for her hair to offset her eyes and face. PER-FECT.
I'm there Thurs at Midnight.

I'm sort of shocked that this day is almost here. Been a long time coming, a lot of anticipation, a lot of time logged discussing its possibilities. I had a chance to see the film about three weeks ago, but it was a last minute invite and somehow something in my life outweighed seeing Spider-man which sort of blew my mind. No other chances came up since then so I'll be checking it out Friday afternoon. Can't wait to see the reaction.

Yes, it's hard to believe that my two decade wait to see my favorite superhero on the big screen has finally come to an end. That it seems to have been, generally, worth the wait makes the moment even sweeter. Here are two of the first old school media reviews I've read: one from The Hollywood Reporter and a very brief review from Newsweek.

I know what you mean, Yando. In the video game of the movie, which uses the actual voices of the actors, there is a scene where he does indeed yell "Wheeee!", which was kinda jarring at first, especially from Toby McGuire. But, in the game at least, it actually works pretty well.

Here's hoping for the best for all us movie fans. I'm ready to go webslinging now!

Latest to rave: the-difficult-to-please-without-$10-and-a-bottle-of-Champale Mike D'Angelo of Time Out New York says SPIDER-MAN is the best film of the year so far. Better than Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN, TIME OUT, or METROPOLIS, to name a few.

The review is the second one on the page, right below his write-up for the latest Kiarostami flick.

I'll let you know what I thought of it tomorrow eve.
I am looking more and more forward to this as the days go by. And I'm not even a comic book fan. It just looks pretty damn cool.
Ok..I've got the tickets. 11.40pm tonight - that's about 8 hours from now. Impressions will follow soon after.

I've got a question: Are most theaters doing the special Thursday 12:00 midnight viewing a la Star Wars? I need to know because if so I'm going Thursday night with a few friends of mine...
Just call your favorite theather and ask, it's kinda hard for us to know what is happening in your theather.
All right, Nunziata... time to spill it. The time hath come. Oh yes, the time hath come indeed.
I just talked to Nick.

I'm not going to completely spoil what he's going to say, but suffice it to say.....

THIS FILM IS(Yes, I'm throwing my cautious optimism to the wind) GOING TO ROCK.

Nick will be on much later with details.
It's on
Is it the best comic book movie ever?

YES.

My review by 10am tomorrow.
Whoa.
I can only assume Nick hasn't seen the JLA live action pilot.
Or Cormans take on FF.

God, I think I have boots of both of those flicks somewhere, need to watch 'em before Spider-man.
I'd like to thank Columbia for backpedalling on the initially planned May 8th release when Lucas announced worldwide release for AOTC because they felt that Spider-Man wasn't big enough to withstand the Star Wars onslaught, thus forcing most of Europe to wait until June to see the damn movie. Here's a clue for them: not only Americans read comics, you know, they are also published in the rest of the world. Thanks for nothin. I'm gonna go cry now.
Oh, and another quick teaser...

Our bitching was in vain. The Green Goblin fucking ROCKS!
"The best comic book movie ever".

Sadly, that doesn't necessarily mean much given all of the previous dreck that's been made ... including all four Batman films. Finding the right balance between story, character, action, and effects has proven to be quite difficult with comic book films in the last twenty years. However, it sounds like you'll be giving Spider-Man a rave review and that's great news. But was it better than your last rave, Sum of All Fears?

This summer is definitely going to be a strong one. And bring on The Hulk, Daredevil, and X-Men 2 next year.
Okay, I've had my pants shat in for the night. Thank you Nick. I'm off to bed.
Better change those pants first.
I didn't say it was the best movie, just the best comic movie. Honestly, while they exist in different worlds I have to give "Sum" the edge.

Dunno about that best comic book movie business, especially in a world with Superman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Tank Girl.

But since I actually look forward to this more at this current point than a certain prequel, I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

I am however rooting for the return of The Geek God Raimi...

Great review Nick, I can't wait for the film.

And it's so funny to see good old Vern Schillinger himself in costume.

It's going to be VERY hard for us hapless UK folk to avoid spoilers for the next MONTH AND A FUCKING HALF isn't it? I still can't believe that not only have they made a Spider-Man movie, but they've apparently made a brilliant Spider-Man movie...

June 14th...so far away...

How much does cryogenic freezing cost?

Saw it last night. What I got out of it was that Raimi loves Spider-man and that he absolutely nails it. The movie not Spidey.

For a movie about a superhero, it's entirely human. For a movie about Spidey, it's all about Peter Parker. It's an intimate movie despite its genre trappings and is about 5 times cooler than Nick's goggles. Raimi's trademarks are up there nicely integrated with everything else and you'll be surprised how much of the origin story from the comic is kept.

One thing that surprised me was how sneaky all the trailers were. You'd think sometimes they probably showed too much. Well, while the scenes in the movie didn't play differently from the trailer, they certainly put a spin on it in the movie. And a particular scene had a little more tension to it because of the trailer.

If there are any faillings, it would be on a purely technical level. The effects were not uniformally good. They were not bad but the quality varies. If the kept the effects quality of the last 2 minutes of the movie throughout, this would be close to perfect. Still, this is a very minor blip on my cock radar.

Definitely shares the pedestal with Supes. Supes was more epic but Spidey is personal. It's your call how you'd like your superhero to be.

Let me start by saying that I feel like I have waited my whole life for this movie(I'm 35), which may not be too far off. Given the track record of comics to film I was skeptical early on, even though I was completely psyched that it was actually going to be attempted.

Could anyone possibly understand what a Spiderman movie should be about, and have the guts and clearance to actually make it right?

Well I just had the chance to see the film and the answer is YES, Sam Raimi gets it. If I was to sit back, close my eyes and try to envision how I would make the film it would match very closely what Raimi has done.

From start to finish this film feels like a comic book.

The pacing of the action is as if you are moving panel to panel with great anticipation.

The angles in which the action scenes are shot are reminiscent of the art work fans of the comic know and love.

The dialogue flows between the characters like a great read.

Every member of the cast nails their character.

So many aspects of this film are so dead on that I damn near cried. As a matter of fact there was a time early in the film when Spiderman is zipping through the city that I actually closed my eyes for a moment and just listened because I knew that what was on screen matched the the vision in my head.

I am so happy that those involved with the film resisted the urge to try and make it more than it is or glitz it up to create greater mass appeal.

Though I'm sure that there will be those that debate how good this film is for me it is as close to perfect as I could have possibly hoped for.

Team Django Operative Robby Butler has score me tickets to the midnight screening on the morrow in Westwood.

The rest of the team and I shall go Friday with MDj and I going on Saturday.

So it looks like I'll be seeing it three times this weekend no matter what...

How is the theatre in Westwood anyways?

Just was there a few ago (had dinner at the California Pizza Kitchen) and saw the theatre and wondered if it was any good. Love that area period though as it doesn't seem as trashy as certain other areas in LA

You'd think so. But apparently not in Houston, unless they're not advertising them on the web. Will have to go check tomorrow in person.

Depends on which theater it Westwood it is. Robby B. said, but his cell was breaking up and I couldn't make it out.

If it was the Mann National, I haven't been there nor have I been to the AMC Century 14 or Mann's Culver Plaza. If it's at the Avco Center, the theater was cool and the experience was a blast.

We say X-Men there at the midnight show opening day. Tyler Mane was there, tore my ticket, and smacked me on the back of the head for cracking on the film. Then they had a big floorshow where he tossed prizes out into the audience.

It was a lot of fun. And seeing has how Spidey is Marvel's BIG GUN...shit should be even cooler...
