The only things that disliked were the inclusion of Macy Gray (only for the fact that it will fuck up the film in 5-10 years), the silly "New Yorkers on the bridge" scene (Forced, improbable, and corny), and the pumpkin bomb that was apparently borrowed from the Aliens in 'Mars Attacks!' (Seriously, what the FUCK was that?). Aside from that, it was damn near flawless.

A question, and this occurred to me during the movie but only thought to ask now, were does PP get the good tights from? He's not that good a tailor. Nit picky as heck but just wanted other's takes.

I was wondering that too.

Watched this again last night, and I enjoyed it even more than the first viewing. This movie was made by someone with so much love for both Spidey and cinema, and that really comes through. Here's some of the references to other Raimi films I've found--
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Norman talks to himself in the mirror: Evil Dead II, Ash talks to himself in the mirror.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">"Maybe we could have some lunch some evening": in Crimewave, Vic says the same line.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">The Green Goblin's rooftop discussion uses the words "fail" and "fall" in succession: this is a joke from The Hudsucker Proxy, in which Tim Robbins kept getting the words confused.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Spider-Man sulks atop a gargoyle: Darkman did the same thing.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Norman sits at the conference table and lists reasons why Oscorp is doing great: this is just like the beginning of Hudsucker.
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Peter Parker's transformation montage: has the same images of neurons and the same visual layout as the Darkman-gets-angry montage. It even ends with a shot of Peter's eye, which is just like another scene in Darkman.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I'm sure I'm forgetting some others too. There are a dozen other things that happen that really remind me of other Raimi films, but I can't tell if they're deliberate references, or if it's that the same kinds of things often happen in both, because comics were a major influence for him.

Smashing heads through the window (Stooges, Darkman, EDII).

The CAR.

And the scene where Spidey stops those villains at S-Mart (not true, but wouldn't that have rocked?)

Okay, so I've been thinking, and the more I think about it, the more I like this movie. It's been two weeks since I saw it, and right now it's about an 87/89 percent for me.

My intial reaction to the movie was that it was bad because it wasn't what I was expecting. Now that I look at it, I realize that my expectations of it sprung from my reading of comic books. I'm a big DC Vertigo guy, and I like my comics dark and grisly. I guess my intial reaction was because of the ending. If the ending stopped right when Parker says "I'm Spider-Man", I would have loved it right off the bat. The two minute flying sequence right after it totally ruins the mood. Through out the whole thing, it was very true to my vison of what spider-man should be, but that last sequence is trying too hard to end it on an inspirational note. I feel it's trying to be SUPERMAN then, and it's not. It's SPIDER-MAN.

Reading some of these posts, I can see that some of my favorite scenes: the score, the scene on the bridge, are the ones people here didn't seem to like. I don't know. I really enjoyed it. I think maybe I'll have to see it again. Peadce.

Spiderman is on my list for saturday, along with AOTC.

My movie weekend is now complete.

Now, give me TTT and Star Trek and I'll take my finger off the button.

Sorry, it's not SPIDER-MAN without Gwen Stacy. She was the real love of his life.

It's the double post from hell!

The romantic aspect was the one thing that bored me in Spidey. Dunst just seemed totally dull as MJ, and was totally unlike the character I know. It just seemed like an afterthought. But otherwise, very fucking cool.

I understand the sentiment, but I kind of lump the lack of Gwen Stacy in the same category as "why isn't Rogue invulnerable and able to fly in X-Men?", to wit:

To introduce Gwen Stacy and have them fall in love would have made the film an unwieldy lenght, involving backstory that folded out over years in the comics and easily adding ~1 hr to an already-long film.

When translating 30+ yrs (or 50+, in the case of Batman), some concessions and compromises with said continuity unfortunately need to be made. I think this was done in the service of the film, and while probably hugely disappointing to hardcore Spidey fans, it is a reasonable alteration, IMO.

Yes I understand Bringing GWEN would open a can of worms, I just feel she was important, and MJ by herself is rather dull. As for the double post It was a mistake that I tried to correct, but every time I tried, I came out the same way so live with it. Spider-man without Gwen would be like Superman without Lois Lane to me anyway. It kind of sucks, but I was really into the comic and really liked the character. She added alot to the comic and I feel would add a lot to the movies. Mary Jane is rather dull.Just a personal opinion.

Interesting thread to read through with the reboot coming.
