i know it's old - but the hell with it - what are your opinions?
It doesn't translate as well on the small screen, but I liked it in the theaters.

I agree with Ghost...I'm hoping Neverwhere will beat it. Probably not, but one can dream.

Monty Python And The Holy Grail is classic!

I actually didn't enjoy Fear and Loathing all that much. I've tried a couple of times, but I can quite get a hold of it. I have a hard time relating to it... if you know what I mean!
I just laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed, then grimaced, then laughed again and laughed and laughed...

i'll have to agree with DJEVIL - it was funny and scary at the same time. if u have ever been really drunk u can relate eventhough when they were messed up it wasn't just alcohol. i never read the book but i think that I got a good idea of who Hunter S Thompson was. I think Depp did an excellent acting job as usual.

as for baron van munch - outstanding flick along with time bandits but i really did enjoy 12 monkeys.
Depp was great in it. I just didn't like the film on the whole. Oh well....What about 12 Monkeys? Now there was a fan-freaking-tastic film! Loved that one.
I think Brad Pitt's better than people give him credit for.

12 Monkeys, Fight Club and Seven are some of my favorite movies. It's kinda hard not to like him.

yea - i agree - i think brad pitt has talent - he's picked some duds - but he has personality - ever since TRUE ROMANCE - he's not the GREATEST actor - but he doesn't deserve all the bashing he gets cause he's a pretty boy

freeman, pitt & spacey - what more could ya want?
norton & pitt - what more could ya ask for?

FINCHER IS THE FUCKING MAN!

hope he does spidey!

What are you idiots talking about? Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas sucked ass. There was no reason to enjoy this film. You are all going to die with your crack pipes. Why praise a film that basicly glorifies drug use? I see no reason to even allow this film to be seen. I did not like it, enjoy it, nor condone it.
Well, then...thanks Sal -- now I've got to see it!

sal, u r the MORON, if you didn't see that the movie DID NOT GLORIFY drug use. I know after the movie was over I didn't want to go out and do some ether, coke, and heroin. If you didn't notice they were acting like jerks the whole movie and went thru mood swings like any crazed drug fiend. You OBVIOUSLY missed the point. Go watch POKEMON - that might be more on your level of understanding.

Sal, why are ya here? Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful for every person that comes on this board (more carriers for the CHUD virus). However, every time you say something, it's usually shooting everybody down. For the most part, we all share the same mind (what, being hooked up via brainpipes to the motherbrain that is Nick).

I understand the necessity for free speech, but it wouldn't hurt to say something positive about SOMETHING. So say something POSITVE, DAMMIT!

'The Chud Virus'...hmmm...well, that explains that new itch, and, I suppose, the oozing.

No wonder I can't get my dog to lick me anymore.

Fear and Loathing was a pleasant surprise for me. I actually skipped the theatrical release and was sad I did. I hate drugs and most glorifying of them onscreen but Hunter Thompson, William Burroughs and their ilk did indeed carve out bold footholds in fiction and it's interesting to watch.

It certainly does not make you a crackhead for watching or even filming it.

I've never tried any drug unless a doctor forced me to use it to prevent gangrene and here I am enjoying the film.

That logic is like saying I go out and shoot down Tie-Fighters because I saw Star Wars or go have sex with gorgeous women because I saw a Bond film...

Wait...

I WISH YOU WERE RIGHT!

Anyhow...

(Also, I think Trainspotting is brilliant).

I am a big fan of this movie so I figured I would revive an old thread and see what other feedback we get. I seriously loved this movie, it was creative and funny, it had some truly great lines (we can't stop here, this is bat country!) and it gave me a glimpse of a more exciting world than I can ever hope to enter. It was like a fun, crazy nightmare I didn't want to wake up from.

I don't think it matters whether you advocate drug use or not when you watch this. I don't think it is exactly for or against the wild life. It showed a lot of the good stuff but it also showed many negative effects too so I believe it evens out. I think this was more a film about pushing the boundaries of life. Of challenging what others consider good or normal and choosing your own path. Of course it's not for everybody, but this is one of my favorite films and it has warped me to the point of no return. And remember, you can turn your back on a normal person, but never turn your back on a drug, especially not one thats waving a razor sharp hunting blade in your eye.

I love this movie. It's a fantastic, delirious piece of work that operates on more levels than many will give it credit for. It has quite a bit different feel to it than the book does, but that's to be expected. I'm just glad that Gilliam got the job.

Oh, and anybody who thinks that Fear & Loathing is a pro-drug movie needs to listen to Terry Gilliam's dvd commentary.
I love this movie, as well. The interaction between Depp and Del Toro is amazing.
Drug movies are a big turn-off to me as well... but the sheer magnitude of drug use in the movie (and book) turns it all into a cosmic-sized joke... And Gilliam nailed Hunter Thompson... fucking nailed him. For proof, see Where The Buffalo Roam (even with Bill Murray's dead-on Thompson mimicry, the direction could not handle Thompson's frenetic prose).

This is a great film.

One of the films that really conveys what it's like to be really fucked up on Acid! (Minus the whole Lizard bar)

Del-Toro is all over the place in this movie and he shines. Nothing can be said about Col. Depp that hasnt already been said.

Notice how he drinks a beer while talking to Busy's cop and you could do that back in those days.

I loved Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Its so great in a completely weird way. Ive watched the Criterion DVD like 6 times now.

Drug movies are fine with me. I like em. This one however never sat well with me. Yeah its Gilliam and it looks great. Yeah Depp is an amazing impressionist and Benicio is my favorite actor so its acted great.

What has always irritated me is the attitude, which we can also find in our parents and people from the 60s and 70s. Its the way people act like drugs are very bad now......unless you did them in the 70s when there were "important issues" and we can fondly reminisce about "experimentation" and the good old days. Its the vibe Depp's Hunter Thompson gives off that his drug use was somehow more productive and or justified than people today. News flash, people get high for the same reasons they always have so drop the pretensions.

Awesome film. Fucking hilarious/scary performances by Del Toro and Depp.

DUKE (V/O)
How long could we maintain, I
wondered. How long before one of
us starts raving and jabbering at
this boy? What will he think then?
This same lonely desert was the
last known home of the Manson family.

The HITCHHIKER's eyes notice a thin line of blood trickling
down GONZO's neck.

DUKE (V/O)
Would he make that grim connection
when my attorney starts screaming
about bats and huge manta rays
coming down on the car?

DUKE's mouth moves intermittently - sometimes in sync with
the words, sometimes not.

DUKE (V/O)
If so - well, we'll just have to
cut his head off and bury him
somewhere. Because it goes without
saying that we can't turn him loose.
He'd report us at once to some kind
of outback Nazi law enforcement
agency, and they'll run us down
like dogs...

DUKE
(out loud to himself)
Jesus! Did I say that?

DUKE (V/O)
Or just think it? Was I talking?
Did they hear me?

GONZO
(reassuringly to HITCHHIKER)
It's okay. He's admiring the shape
of your skull.

It's late and I'm bored. Here is my alltime favorite moment next to the lizards.

this movie is watchable, it more a bunch of short movies strung together. Some worked some did not. Another good scene was the police drug seminar.
