I HATE RELIGION

Thread Starter
The reason christianity takes most of the flack has nothing to do with concerns over what is PC. It has to do with it being the dominant religion in most western countries. It is what we see almost every day and have to deal with. As the dominant group christians tend to have a great deal of influence in society, so when faith leads to abusive or harmful influences, such as trying to force ideas of morality onto everyone else, it attracts a lot of criticism.

I have no problem poking fun at other groups like Raeleans, but due to their small size and lack of influence they usually do not attract as much attention.

While I can agree some atheists may be dogmatic, I do not see atheism itself as being dogmatic.

Are there any countries other than the US where Christianity is quite as prevalent? My understanding is that it is not quite as powerful in Europe as it once was. I guess I'm thinking primarilly of Protestant Christianity as I know that the Catholic Church still has a pretty broad reach (but I've heard even that is waning).

I will not say I hate religion.

I will say I have no respect for an organized belief system that feels the need to spend Sunday mornings terrifying little kids with talk of them dying and going to Hell instead of letting them just be little kids.

I have no respect for people who claim they are devout Whatevers and can't tell me as much about their religion as a non-believing atheist.

I have no respect for people who come to their beliefs not through contemplation and serious thought, but simply because it was what they were told was right and believed it without question.

I have no respect for an organized religion that tells me I can rape and pillage and murder and still go to Heaven on my deathbed as long as I repent and really mean it, but that Gandhi and Buddha are doomed to Hell.

I have no respect for any religion that uses its abilities not to comfort and guide but to bully and dictate, to set itself up as the sole arbiter of what is good and right, and instead of being content that they will be rewarded if they are correct, feel the need to make sure everyone thinks the same way they do.

But I don't hate religion.

Well, I have a few Greek friends and the Eastern Orthodox church plays a HUGE part in Greek social life; and the Roman Catholic Church holds tremendous sway throughout South America and Mexico. Plus I guess there are some strong pockets of belief in Africa.

This is all just gleaned from a reasonably well-informed person who doesn't really give Catholicism/Christianity's reach much thought, other than the fact that God or no God, organized religion is just another power structure which keeps those in power in power and helps to keep the poor poor.

Because there's seven freakin' channels devoted to it on my cable service?
Well, once it becomes organized, it basically loses all of its personal aspects.
Because it makes tons of money for people who don't practice what they preach?

I don't hate religion. I have a severe dislike for organized religions that try to define my freedoms even if I don't believe in things they accept as absolute truth.

The current level of influence held by religious people over our political system, and the lengths they will go to in order to maintain or increase that influence, scares me.

Organized religion is one of the main reasons I doubt.

Catholicism, in addition to some truly horrible events in my life, killed off my faith.

BINGO.

Plus, Christians have, as someone said in Devin's mail thread, a persecution complex. Many are absolutely certain that the world is out to get them, that they're the tiny minority holding out against the barbarian hordes. It's annoying, because to any outsider, it's really obvious that this could not be further from the truth.

Equally annoying is the tendency of Christians to evangelize.

Why does this thread even exist?

Kinda with Slater on this, perhaps I too am Slaterian? But, aren't we just providing a kind of circle jerk for our dislike for organized religion in this thread?

You are going to severely scar Scott's psyche if you keep asking questions like this.

Beer-Dieism is shaky as it is.

First of all it's BeerDie-ology, which is more of a philosophy than a religion (unless the IRS asks). And secondly if my faith gets shaky I go to my local bar/temple adn rid my spirit of harmful body-deltoids. They absolutely HATE alcohol.
You might want to keep your deltoids though.

That whole muscular system and all.

Same thing happened to my mother. She became a Christian just over a year ago, though.

I have lots of issues with the catholic church. Actually, I have issues wth pretty much everybody, though some are much more serious than others. I have come to a place, though, where my relationship with Christ is not really effected by those who claim to be His spokespeople.

If he hates religion, why does Bunny Dracula worship at the alter of his 'clever' words?

Nope, it's Christ's fault:

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Matt 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[1] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Jesus not Paul.

Atheism (it's like a religion in it's dogmatism)
I've tried telling atheists that they are religious in their beliefs if you look at the actual definition of the word, but I am met with even more hatrd and vitriol for daring to call them "religious".

It's simply a language problem...mostly.

See, now if you'd just call them "dogmatic", you'd eliminate the problem. I SWEAR you thrive on such confrontations, K. wink
