AICN, Facer, and movie sites in general

This seems like as good a place as any to post this.
A Talkback at AICN had an interesting post from the self-righteous AICN scourge TheFacer. It alledged that Harry ran an article casually listing DVD's he's been watching recently was a disguised promotion for said DVD's. Facer claimed most of the discs mentioned just came down in price or were rereleased today. I don't know if that's true or not, but if it is, it's some food for thought.
Anyway, AICN's server was (typically) overloaded and I couldn't get on to discuss. But I thought maybe you guys would like to.
My take- Facer is a self-important blowhard that needs to reevaluate his priorities in life, but the psycho-stalker is on to something. Harry's site is considered the most widely known and influential of it's kind. I harbor no ill will towards Harry, but the guy's a buffoon. I don't doubt that many of his "reviews" are shaded by free "pwesents" and compliments from Hollywood players, whether he's aware of it or not. I'm sure the guy also considers himself some kind of gonzo journalist, taking pride in his inability to write coherently.
The problem I have is this is the guy who is representative of film sites on the web. Sites like CHUD and FilmThreat are both infinitely better in terms of content and style (not to mention journalistic integrity), and yet Hollywood seems to bow to the whims of the internet equivalent of Simpsons' Comic Store Guy.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. What are yours?

I really hope this thread is closed before it gets crazy.

This is a relatively important subject. Surely we can engage in a spirited discussion without any craziness...right? Right? (spoken as brick hurls towards head)

We need LESS threads about that fuckfire.

Someone should close this. I don't wanna be reminded of this guy any longer than I need to.

It's cool to see you guys getting some respect, but it must be weird to be analyzed and dissected like this as well. Congrats on the ink!

You just had to resurrect one of my douchiest threads, didn't you.
No matter. Star Chamber will be closing it any minute now.

Good on Devin, Ryan and Cinematical for getting tapped as spokesmen.

Gah, I just googled within the site for a "movie sites" thread. Sorry.

The comments on the article are shaping up nicely:

I have to completely disagree with this article. I have spent the better part of four years trying to get studio recognition for our Popcorn N Roses site network, with almost no inroads. There are always catch-22's along the way that we have no way to comply with. We've been lucky enough to hook up with dozens of indie filmmakers, and quite a few actors and actresses along the way, and more recently a few publicists from individual movies or performer, but getting the studios to recognize the work we've been doing has been absolutely impossible. We don't break the rules, we play whatever games they want us to play, we offer them our stats for both websites and podcasts, and they get rebuffed as though our work tirelessly promoting the entertainment industry means nothing. Every one of the majors has rejected our applications to be part of their publicity and press groups; hell, we can't even get the film critic groups to acknowledge us.

I have an idea why they can't get the majors to help them out...

That page is screaming at my eyes.

They should have spelled it "Real Moviez for REEL people." I think the z would have pushed popcorn n' roses over the top.

So who's going to be the first to photoshop Devin's head onto Bambi?

It takes only a quick glance at CHUD to see the dream is now a reality. The site, like hundreds of other niche-oriented filmgoer sites that have cropped up the past few years, is packed with Faraci's largely fawning accounts of studio-enabled visits to the sets of such movies as "The Hangover," "Land of the Lost" and "Watchmen" and one-on-one interviews with stars and filmmakers including Daniel Craig and Judd Apatow.
Sounds like they're hinting at something there.

As far as the reliability of 'geek sites', most of them are bloody gore-hound sites, promoting torture against women, etc....including your Aint It Cool, CHUD crap...sick-
Where's my torture against women?!?

It's consistent with the point of the article, that studios are leveraging access to movies for sites whose content suggests they would be inclined to (honestly) support the film. Unfortunately that particular sentence can be read as implying payola.

Which we know isn't true, but someone unfamiliar with CHUD could possibly come away thinking the site has evolved into a studio shill.

Man, I'd completely forgotten how fascistic STAR CHAMBER was. It was dying out when I started lurking, but those anonymous, emotionless, posts were kind of terrifying at the time.

It's sad that Chud is getting roped in with other websites in regards to shilling because Devin is probably the biggest advocate of journalist ethics on the web.

I'm pretty sure I was part of STAR CHAMBER briefly. Wow, that was a LONG time ago..

Except for the links and the occasional IGN scoop, I think CHUD is the only site I get movie news from. Everyone's got their own agenda, but there tends to be less fuckheads per capita on CHUD, so that's why I stuck with this one.

ETA: I'm not as dedicated a geek as I once was. Kind of makes me sad. Stupid grown-up stuff.

To me, CHUD has always been the most awesomely blue-collar of movie websites. Not nerdy, not snobby, just in love with film.

It's like CHUD gets home from a hard day's work and immediately fixes the broken washer/car/fence/kid. With that done, he cracks a raw egg into a pint of cheap beer, sits in the recliner, and answers EVERY fucking question on Jeopardy!. Wheel of Fortune, too. AndThe Price is Right on vacation and sick days.

That's how I see CHUD, and it's why I'm happy to be here.
