Why do people post about their post totals in the Shameless Self Promotion forum?

Are they shamelessly self promoting all the free time on their hands? I would imagine that stuff would go in here.

They must be proud of their measly accomplishments. Sad, really.

I just thought that self promotion was for your website or your product. In my head boasting about your post total is a Chewer thing.

Also, definitions of accomplishment may vary widely.

If you channelled all this energy into DVD reviews and whatnot, Dev...

Well, the Chewers forum is relatively new. Shameless was the place to promote yourself prior to its existence.

Yeah, and they really need to stop advertising their shitty books, too.

That's right. They're shitty in my store, but not in any other store.

The whole shilling for Barnes and Noble is really a joke -- a riff on the shilling that happens in this place. If you buy a book at one of our competitors, it really doesn't matter to me. It's like someone who works flipping burgers saying on the boards "Eat at McDonalds." Yep, that $2.00 burger purchase is going to go right in that person's pocket.

Read. That's all I care about.

It's good for you.

Why do you even care? You should follow my "shining example" and not click on threads that don't interest you.

Settle down, Blofeld. I was making fun of myself--and my shilling for *my* shitty book/website--not you. No insult intended.

Support your local library....

Yes. They need people moving about the books. Helps circulate the stench.

The homeless have to read tooooooooooooo
I've noticed the cleaner homeless hang out at Barnes and Noble. Or maybe it's the unwashed book nerds. I can't tell. I just know it ruins the book hunting fun when I get a whiff of the BO. We have a Borders opening up in a couple weeks, so hopefully that will disperse the crowd a bit.

Here's a funny tale: Working at the shop, and there's a customer who NEEDS a book for a class, have to have it read, etc. We don't have it in stock. The next closest five stores (after calling each of them) don't have it in stock. We could order, but by the time it arrived from the warehouse, it'd be too late.

What do you do?

Me? I call the competitors. Let's locate the book for the customer -- maybe we lose THAT sale (which we wouldn't have gotten anyway), but we gain loyalty. Maybe just a little. It's called Customer Service (if you work in retail, you might want to look it up.... it's rare).

I called Borders. The phone rang. And rang.

And rang.

Finally, someone picked up. "Hello," they said.

"Yes, this is Matt calling from Barnes and Noble ... I have a customer here who needs a book that we don't have in stock. Would you check your shelves to see if you have it?"

"Um..." hesitates the man on the other end of the line. "I can't really help you."

"This is Borders, right?"

"Yes. But I'm a customer."

Ah that's a good one.

Something I would do in the end myself.

Blo, my best friend hangs out at his local B&N and one day the phone kept ringing for five minutes. Finally he got up, answered it, and even helped the guy out.

Hope your B&N isn't like that. wink

No. You don't do the sales volume we do with that kind of "service." We almost meet Will's annual income.

Who here doesn't love massive book chains?

Blo, Blo, Blo...

As a former manager of a used bookstore, who has done the same thing in the same situation, I would first have checked the used bookstores in the area on www.abebooks.com or www.bookfinder.com, sorting by state. Have the guy drive to Vail if he needs the book that badly!

You personally are making that Barnes and Noble great.

I wish we had 'net access, or I might have searched.

I refer people to www.alibris.com all the time. I'll make note of those URLs as well.

Yet still donesn't match his wife then huh?

And I gotta give Will a call here. Seems that things are going well with the TV show since he hasn't been around much.
