Why do people start threads to announce they are new?

We know you are new because:

a) we've never seen your name before, and

b) we can read your post total.

I'm not trying to be an ass, but it seems silly. Just join in conversations, people will welcome you, and we can all live in one happy family.

99% of the time, the people who start the "I'm new here" threads often disappear within a week, never to be seen a again.

What exactly do you get out of it other than marking yourself as fresh meat?

I think it's a formality type thing. Just to get to know people and learn your way around.

Hell, it can't be any worse than the "I have nothing better to do than start another thread" threads in the Chewer Forum lately.

I suck, You suck, We all suck, What are you wearing, What should you be wearing, I just got laid, Make better posts, and those hilarious threads that take the name of another, serious, thread and put a comic spin on them!

Ha ha ha ha ha!

I'd rather read a sincere post by a "Newbie" than another idiotic one by a "cherished" resident.

i did that when i started making posts, and i lasted longer than 2 weeks.
(2 wweeeeeekkssss 2 weekkkkss-total recall)
it doesn't bother me, i understand it, and if they don't last longer than a few more posts, no big deal. it's not like it's mean to introduce yourself. it's all in fun.

Damn. I guess people are touchy lately. I sincerely want to know why people feel they must announce their entrance. I never did. The majority of people who register on these boards never did. What's so special about the 2% of you who feel the need to let everyone know who you are?

As for CHUD being intimidating, Hell life is intimidating. Does that mean I should walk into the supermarket and announce my arriveal? No. If I don't where something is, I ask someone. I honestly don't get it.

Edited for spelling and to reiterate that I'm not knocking anyone. Curiousity killed the cat. Now i know the feeling.

Why do we new poster make threads introducing ourselves?

I really do not have a problem with "Newbie" threads. They really do not hurt anything, and actually gives Chewers some insight into the new people posting. Actually, I like the newbie threads alot, because I find people interesting.

Alternatively, we could go with a plan where non-newbies start threads to introduce themselves.

"Hello, I'm... well, you know, and I like... hell, you already know what I like. And what I don't like. Peace out."

On an unrelated note, what is the deal with "Peace out?" What does it mean? Where does it come from? Is everyone on the internet *really* a renegade fat nude hippy on the run from 1967? Inquiring minds want to know.

"Peace out" has its origins in hip hop, not those smelly hippies. I believe it derives from "Peace, I'm outta here", which literally means "Take care everyone, I'm going!"
