What makes a good thread?

Well, as the board erupts into a melee over newbies and oldies and pointless threads, I guess I was interested in asking YOU what your idea of a good thread is...

For me a good thread should do one or more of these things:

A) Be original.

B) Encourage discussion. And not the endless posting of non-sequiters that passes for comedy sometimes.

C) Be funny.

Actually, I think ALL threads should include (B).

Hahaha, it appears none of you know! UNSURPRISING! wink

We're all busy watching Nick's thread to see what twist the drama takes next.

You're right about encouraging discussion. To do this, I think a thread needs to have a topic. Something the people posting in it discuss. If a thread is just one word exclamations or hundreds of posts back and forth with no real reason, I don't think it's a good thread.

Humor is good, but not required. In an ideal thread, there are thoughtful posts (with paragraphs in them, hopefully), and these posts, in addition to offering an opinion, have a couple humorous bits.

I gotta level with you - I hate long posts. If I see more than a couple of paragraphs, more than a few lines of text, I skip to the next post.

What makes a good thread? Images of Takeshi Kitano shooting himself in the head, that's what.

Oh, I agree, I find epic posts tedious a lot of the time. I just mean a few easy-on-the-eyes paragraphs versus a single off-topic sentence or a rambling monster paragraph. Those are the ones I skip. Especially when the giant paragraph actually contains maybe three sentences (punctuation-wise). So maybe good grammar is another thing that helps a good thread.

My threads...

My threads are always good. Well, they are to me anyway.

But yes, a good thread has to at least encourage discussion. Whether its funny, debates, or whatever...

I agree with Dev's criteria. All three make for really good posts. This crap with what I ate for dinner and the last word threads (which REGRETFULLY I had a hand in) are just dumb. Now a little dumb is good but a lot of dumb is bad.

I agree that most threads should encourage discussion. That is the first thing i think about before posting a new topic of my own -- will people talk about it.

Also, threads with pictures of naked ladies make me smile.

Well, as I'm usually one of the ones who ends up writing wordy posts, I've finally figured out why nobody knows me!

But seriously, if somebody has something genuine to say, I'm all for it. Preferably something with a little wit - or some good bathroom humor (as long as it's tasteful wink ). And more than a little intelligence.

The ones I end to skip over are the peeps who seem to feel they aren't getting their point across, so they keep posting the same thing over and over again. Perhaps they think that if they can just rearange the same words into the proper codex, someone will give them the exact response they are looking for...

I think its a combination:

1-Funny/Witty
2-Longevity
3-Inspire discussion
4-Contain the words "I" "love" and "prala"
4b. In that order.
