Rommel
I'm not German nor a Nazi, I just find Erwin Rommel a particularly fascinating person. And he was one hell of a soldier.

Amen; he was hardly some Nazi toady either - he gained respect from the allies who went against him both for his battlefield prowess AND gentlemanly conduct (made sure his prisoners were treated well, etc). One of the great modern generals, and from what I've read, ranks up there with the greats through history. |
My grandfather was fighting in N. Africa and was actually captured by Rommel just before Rommel had to leave. Rommel made sure they were all treated well while in his presence. Of course, as soon as they (the P.O.W.'s) got out of his hands and were put on the train to Berlin, the story was different.
Anyway, Chavez, you are exactly right. A brilliant tactician and compassionate man, Rommel in no way believed in what the Nazi's were doing closer to home (if he even knew). He got a raw deal at the end, but went out like a true soldier.
Sorry for the rant, but now you all know where my fascination w/ WWII comes from...my grandfather. Who turned 81 on 3/3, by the way.
