When 'The Core' breaks 80 million ...

I will give up all movies for 3 months in protest. No theater, no dvd, no cable. Not even vhs. This is important because I have 3 sets of passes to theaters right now. I could see three movies free, but I won't if that movie breaks $80 million. It's time to take a stand.
That's not a bad idea. I couldn't last 3 months, though. Withdrawal symptoms and stuff.

I debated about setting the limit at 100 million for that reason.
Have you seen the flick? Nick said it's good.

I have not seen it. This is irrational hate based on the premise and that god-awful trailer. And while I respect Nick's opinion, I don't always agree with him. This looks like a waste of good talent, ID4 style waste of scarce resources. I'm not going to see it to find out if it's bad either. I won't subject myself to that.

Hey if bringing down the house can make 83,400,000$$$. "The Core" is probably going to make more than 120 million.

That's what prompted me to make this sacrifice. Too much drek. It's too late for me to protest Bringing Down the House, and I didn't think it would do so well.

At least the weather is getting nicer. I can spend some time outside during my 3 month hiatus from movies.
Why all the "Core" hatred? There are so many more deserving movies out there right now...coughDreamcatchercough.

Dreamcather won't make any money. No need to protest a blah movie that makes blah bank. I'm protesting what looks to be a horrible movie that might make way too much money.

I just re-read The Core discussion, and I like Jon Rogers. I'm still not going to see this. Disaster movies suck, and even the positive thoughts were saying things like 'best disaster movie in a while'. Now, personally, this thing could be 50 times better than Twister, and I'd still call it crap.

1) I don't respect disaster movies
2) advertising looks awful
3) no positive reviews caused me to change my mind
4) the negative reviews seem to reinforce my decision
5) 80 million - 3 months of no movies for me.
I think I would die if I didnt watch a movie for 3 months,.

It's going to be hard for me, too. I love movies. I own about 125 dvds. Phone booth is finally opening here. There are movies I really want to see. I hope The Core doesn't make 80 million. I don't want to give up movies.
This may well be one of the stupidest things I've ever read on these boards.
I for one am looking forward to seeing "The Core"
Dave Davis just posted my exact thoughts. You're gonna stop seeing movies to protest what other people like?
I have to agree that this is also one of the most stupid things I have ever read.

Now this isn't meant as a personal attack, but really, it's just dumb. I thought you were joking at first, as I read on however it was fairly clearly you were not.

What possible effect do you hope to have by doing this? As far as I can see this is what is known as "cutting off your nose to spite your face". So you don't see movies for 3 months. The only person this will matter to is you. I'm not sure Hollywood is going to miss your input to their pockets or going to change the movies they make to suit you. And why should they?

You may not like disaster movies but there are many who do, what right have you to not want Hollywood to cater for their movie tastes? About as much right as they have to demand an end to movies you like - none.

At the end of the day, if you do this or not doesn't matter to me. But I felt the need to post anyway just to say how dumb an idea it is

I'm going to stop seeing movies (for a while) because the quality of the product is shitty. If Nike started producing nothing but crap, I'd stop buying Nikes. If I suddenly didn't like anything that Coke produced, I'd stop buying Coke products. This is similar.

For some reason, this movie stirs up some intense, irrational (unusual for me) bile in my stomach. I don't mind if you don't understand or agree, and I don't think one geek giving up movies for a finite amount of time will have any impact really. But I'm going to do it (if the movie passes the magic number). I'll keep you all posted on my progress.

If "The Core" breaks 80 million I'm not going to eat pizza on May 15th. Just got to do my part.

Not really. If you don't like Nike does it mean you stop buying running shoes? if you don't like coke does it mean you stop drinking soft drinks?
Probably not, you just avoid those "brands". In the same respect as if I don't like a certain genre I stop watching it and watch another instead. Not stop watching movies entirely.
It would make more sense if you didn't go see "The Core" and instead went to three lesser known movies that you felt needed the support. "Spirited Away" is coming back to theaters. Go see that a bunch of times. It's the most effective way to get your point across.

You may be onto something there. After further reflection, I realized that I'm just disappointed about the quality of the movies that seem to be making tons of money these days. It's not this movie in particular, or even the genre, but this is the movie that really brought the issue to a head for me. Like maybe if you get sick of every running shoe you take up swimming for a while. (Not a great analogy, but I wanted to continue it from above.) I never pretended this was rational mind you. You can verify that in the posts above.

That's a very good point. But it requires more time and more money. I hope to use the time I would normally spend watching movies doing productive things. (like playing video games or dusting my vhs collection)

You should vow to research movies more, instead. The crap has ALWAYS been in Hollywood. People have always flocked to shit films.

The Core won't make a lot of money, trust me. That said, your boycott (stress the BOY) will only hurt you.

I'm surprised how much shit this has stirred up. I really didn't think it was a big deal. There has always been crap, and I often skip it. This time I wanted to do a little more. Insulting my manhood is uncalled for, and frankly I expected more from you, Nick. I don't need anyone's approval, I didn't expect a long line of people to line up and say 'me, too', and I don't think this is going to change the world.

I'm going to take some time off if this trend (shitty movies making loads of money) continues. I have decided to define that by whether a movie makes 80 million dollars. If you like the movie, more power to you. I didn't mean to offend. I'm going to follow through with this though. I'm curious to see if I can make it 3 months without movies. Maybe I'll get lucky and this won't make too much money so the whole thing will be moot.

We've covered that already.
It needed to be reiterated.
No one is insulting you. We just don't get why you are doing this.

If you want to take 3 months away from movies, do it. Why does it have to be tied to whether The Core makes money? It just doesn't make any sense.
*Double post*

Plus, you haven't even seen 'The Core' (have you?), so it makes even less sense.

I'm about to step out for a while, so I won't be able to post anything else for a couple of hours.

It doesn't have to be tied to The Core, but that's the film that pushed me over the edge. I have seen the trailer several times, and was amazed that it looked so bad every time. I started thinking about other similar movies and how they make tons of money. Then I was thinking about Bringing Down the House making tons of money. It's a travesty.

I'm disappointed in the quality of movies that are being produced, and the number of people who are going anyway. I'm going to take some time off and see if my perspective changes. Maybe after 3 months of nothing, I'll be able to enjoy more movies than I can now. Maybe I just need some time to come to grips with becoming a movie snob who hates stuff just because it's mainstream big-budget hollywood crap.

I tied it to the box office for The Core. That's not rational, but this is the movie that really pushed me over the edge. Like Lumberg in Office Space, it has become the focal point for all that is soul-less and evil.

Oh, and some of those posts were insulting, though yours wasn't, Diva.

edited for a typo.

I wasn't insulting your manhood, nor your spot on Guy Pearce's arm. Just your of cutting off your nose to spite your face mentality.

I thought "stress the BOY" was a pretty clear insult. Mild, but insulting none-the-less.

Of course, since I've spent all day explaining and defending myself, I may be a little punchy.

edited because I rememberd Nick's quote wrong. I changed "emphasis on BOY" to "stress the BOY"

The stress the boy thing was about immaturity, not small penis. Why is everything about manhood with guys? I'm fine with mine, don't need to worry about the size every 6 minutes. Relax, kiddo, stress the DDO.
Well the movies will certainly miss you, won't they?

Start a petition while you're at it...
Has anyone seen "The Blockbuster Imperative" on Trio this month? I caught the tail end of it. The screenwriter for xXx said something to the effect "If you don't want crap movies... stop seeing crap." Which I thought was rather insulting, He essentially said, I'll write crap cause I know you'll see it.
The quote isn't exact, and again I stress I caught the tail end of it.
Fight the good fight I say...but watch the good stuff while you do it.

Aghora, that's the closest thing to support I've gotten here. Thanks.

Oh, and I wasn't offended by BOY because I'm insecure about the size of my penis. I was just shocked that I was being called names. Although now that I stepped away for a while, I think I probably overreacted anyway.

I'm heading out again. More on this when I return, I'm sure.
Aghora's not supporting you. He/she is telling you to watch good flicks, or try to, not ban seeing them altogether. Your logic does not make sense, is pretty much what everyone is saying in this thread.

Godspeed.

This is sorta like when Rath talked trash (a LOT of trash) about The Royal Tenenbaums and how it looked stupid and he would never see it. And then, he did and it's now his favorite film of all time, I think.

Making bold declarations like this on the internet gets you nowhere. Boy, have I learned that...

I'm kinda surprise that this thread has not been closed by the fascist SC for being labeled as a waste of space thread.

Of course I’m just kidding and I’d like to state for the record that I love SC, and that I have no books, nor have I ever seen one.
Poor guy... stick to your guns, man! Rule number one when dealing with your perogative is that it's completely your decision and you don't have to answer to anyone for it until your fist hits their nose. If you want to boycott movies, go for it all the way, man! It probably doesn't make sense, but if that's what your resolve is, don't doubt it for a moment. In fact, if you need encouragement, just post your mind right in here and I'll cheer for you.

Actually, that was worse, 'coz it was THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS...

Where was this stump when "Armageddon" was released?

That deserved a protest. Yeesh.

"The Core" looks like good old-fashion fun. An era of when they knew how to make disaster movies entertaining. I shall get nostalgic of why George Kennedy is nowhere to be seen.

For the record: I'm going to do this if the movie passes 80 million. And I didn't say that Aghora was supporting me, but that it was the closest thing I had gotten to support.

Maybe this is all due to my lack of perspective about the movie. If that's the case my new perspective after 3 months off might make me change my mind.

I appreciate you all trying to straighten me out, and I promise that if I don't make it for 3 months, it will be due to something good, like Phone Booth. or Memento. or Fight Club. It will not be The Hunted, The Core, or Bringing Down the House.

Oh, shit I hadn't thought about porn. That doesn't count, right?
