Also there is a film in the New Arrival section of AZNFilms.com (can't spell the name. O-something)

Seems like their staff liked it and sounds interesting.

Quick question on SM and PG, does the SE have subs on anything, anyone know?

Also, I'm looking for one more newer korean flick to add, any suggestions?

And K, replied.
Not sure about SSMAPHG, but it's a Euro PAL edition, so it should have the goods subbed in English as well, I think.

As for other Korean DVDs,

Nowhere to Hide may be to your liking, but if you wait for a week or so longer, look what's in store in the coming weeks:

Resurrection of the Little Match Girl
The Way Home
Lover's Concerto
Yesterday (Korean Sci-Fi)

i likes Fulltime Killer also...it is just a different kind of movie than The Mission, in terms of style and action...The Mission is more of an ensemble piece, with all five guys being their own cool-as-ice character, while Fulltime Killer is mainly about the #2 guy going after the #1 guy with a girl in the middle of it, roughly just the three main characters...

as a side note, the only thing i really didn't like in Fulltime Killer as well as other movies in this same vein, was that the final face off always comes down to who has the most bullets...i would like to see a movie where the two top guys actually use their brains, try to out-think the other, rather than just shoot the shit out of everything...dunno, i like that too though...

since we're asking, i was thinking about buying Musa or Buchinmoo, which would you recommend? also what is that Sharkskin Man movie about...kinda hard to tell if it was good or not from their description...

i also got my orders from dddhouse and dvdasian.com today...yoohoo..

Speaking of Korean films, I was quite disappointed with Dream Of A Warrior, a case where the trailer looked better than the movie.

electrichead, MUSA, definitely.

Zalasta, you shoulda come to us first. My condolences.

Tony, if you haven't seen Kids Return yet, you're in for a treat. Kitano's best, as far as I'm concerned.
I haven't seen a lot of Kitano at all, Violent Cop, Hana-Bi, and Brother are all I have seen of his. So, I'm really looking forward to it.

Thinking about picking up Getting Any, how is that one?

Anyway added My Boss My Hero and My Wife is a Gangster to my cart, word on those?

I still haven't watched this yet. I know, I'm ashamed. It's my #2 disc to watch this weekend, after Kitano's Hana-bi SE

KIKUJIRO

Must see. Heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time.

Getting Any was a riot, but it helps if you're familiar with Kitano's Japanese TV comedy roots.

My Boss My Hero is good, a typical formula comedy ala Hiding Out, but has some meaty critical views on Korea's politics and educational institution. And that female teacher is a TOTAL babe.

My Wife is a Gangster, another formula action-comedy. Light as a feather, and you'll probably forget about it as soon as you pop the disc out, but pretty darn entertaining for the duration.

I have Hana Bi on tape since March 2001 (taped it when it aired on French TV). Haven't even watched it. I'm ashamed too. And I second the love for Kikujiro. Beautiful film. I saw it during the Cannes Festival and just kept on whistling the main theme of the movie for hours afterwards.
My secret shame. Apart from Johnny Mnemonic and Battle Royale, I still haven't watched any "proper" Takeshi Kitano.
Actually, Mnemonic was the first movie in which I ever saw Kitano, about a year before I'd see Sonatine. Go rent them now Adam, you won't regret it.

Alright get this.

Watched Guns and Talks. Awesome movie and I loved the humor. Defintely quite the character driven film.

Watched The Mission. Was underwhelmed. I enjoyed Fulltime Killer not far more then this but it was defintely a better movie then this one. Coulda been longer and defintely could of used a bit more in the way of character progression. And more action. Didn't give enough to show how badarse these guys really were.

I don't know. Perhaps I was expecting something else but I didn't get it here.

Oh well I guess. Still many other movies to watch.

And I love this thing ever since I saw it as someone's avatar. I like the disregard(or actual regard?) for the camera. Makes it apart of the movie.

Comments on my latest AZN order before I do it, anything that sucks in this order? I know this is the place to ask.

Sharkskin Man & Peach Hip Girl: SE $49.99
i loved this flick. an obvious Tarantino response, but not as flagrant (or painful) as Score. this SE version is the Japanese version i have though, and all the extras are in unsubbed Japanese. so unless you're learning the language you're better off grabbing the cheaper version.

and i loved My Wife is a Gangster. sorta fluffy but still violent.

I already ordered the SE, oh well, I do know a little Japanese and the packaging is cooler.

Alright just watched No Blood No Tears and I love the dang thing.

Wasn't blown away (well actually several of the fights were shot in a great way) but it was defintely a solid story with enough quirkiness to make me get involved.

Wish the two lead women were involved in more scenes working together but no biggie. Had some great cinematography and a nice flow. Did feel long but not in a bad way. The director was able to get quite a bit of story into that film and I was impressed.

Overall a good film that makes any other girls with 'tude look pretty tame.

It gets my recommendation.

Did you watch any of the Miike films?
Ugh.

Finished Audition an hour ago.

Ugh.

Disturbing and...... disturbing.

I noticed something after I finished. 7 or 8 years ago I think I could have breezed through a movie like that, no problem.

Now that I'm older and have a wife and kids I find that films that I could have watched without blinking an eye now seem to bother me more. Make sense?

Anyway, Audition was a unique experience, and I'm intrigued enough by it to seek out other Miike films. For better or worse.

And how do I get one of those wires she uses? I have a couple of cats to get rid of....

Heh.

Interesting to see you....made it through.

Miike's films only go...uh....downhill from there as you must have read those links earlier in the thread.

You can see why I am not going to be watching his films. Don't think I can stomach it and find a meaning at the same time.

Cheers!
Maybe that's what bothered me about it. The seeming normalcy (for the most part) that it displays for the first hour and fifteen minutes, then the sudden spiral into horror that it takes.

Maybe if I see one of his that starts off gruesomely then I can get used to it easier.

Glad you like Guns Chris, the "love" scene was a classic wasn't it?

I also liked how the narrator suddenly had a forgetful moment in the middle of the story, very interesting.

Got Oasis Se this weekend, and showed Visitor Q to both Big Black and Waco. He he he.

Khitch, BTW, is one of the coolest motherfuckers ever.
I saw Kitano's Kid's Return last night, and thought it was great but also contained some meandering stuff. Then again, that could have been a deliberate intention of the piece, evidenced by that last exhange in the movie between our two heroes, after their respective rise and falls.

"Masaru, are we finished now?"

"Idiot, we haven't even begun yet."

A cavalcade of Kitano-isms, the Yakuzas, the coming-of-age story, his obsession with boxing, the standup manzai comedy routines, etc.

Score once again by Joe Hisaishi, this time a bit more zippy and electronica-flavored. Very cool, a good buy. The big screen debut for then newcomer Masanobu Ando, the orange-haired nutzo Kiriyama from Battle Royale. He looks 16 here.

For me the great Kitano is:
Fireworks
Kikujiro
Sonantine
Scene at the Sea
Brother

Followed by:
Violent Cop
Getting Any
Boiling Point
Kids Return

I'd probably put Kids Return as his weakest. But I love the man so I still like it.
Blunt, I hope you enjoy FTK.

And the first time I saw Kitano was in Nagisa Oshima's excellent Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence co-starring David Bowie, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Tom Conti, where Beat played a Japanese WW2 POW camp guard. Great flick, needs to come out on Region 1 soon.

Call and CT, I'm sorry to hear that you guys were let down by your choices.

The Mission is not your typical "HK" flavored action-fest where people are shooting endlessly while defying gravity, and that's what I love about it. The efficiency and the calculated logic in the action scenes. Plus as Dre mentioned, everything you need to know about the group and their dynamics are hinted at, and not too blatantly obvious and forcefed, so you're not 100% sure where the truth and allegiances lie.

Audition is the reason I will never watch another Fatal Attraction/The Crush/Sleeping With the Enemy, etc. type flick ever again. Nothing can touch this. Just beautiful in its own twisted, sad way.
On the contrary! I was shaken AND impressed by Audition.

I found it horribly disturbing, but in a good way.

I was interested enough in Miike's style and talent to continue searching out his other titles.

I'll just go in with a wary eye....
Enjoyed Fulltime Killer a good deal. Really liked the narrative structure, good action scenes, fun overacting by Andy Lau, but it didn't impress me as much as The Mission did. And seeing Simon Yam playing dumb by constantly tilting his head left and right got on my nerves after a while. But Kelly Lin is yummy.

Kids Return is my fave Kitano, mainly because it's his most personal. He shot it right after his accident, and I certainly feel that he put a lot of himself in the characters.

Not so much disappointed with my choice Khitch, just with the movie. I will take a look at it again sometime or another and concentrate some more on it. I watched it quite late at night and maybe need a fresher viewing.

I find it interesting though how much I am enjoying the flicks that come with a more "eh" review from folks. I though NBNT was wonderful though I did want the older chick to kick more butt then she did. God knows I wanted her to kick the butt of the guy from G&N so bad.

I didn't find the movie too QT-esque nor Guy Ritche-like but more its own style. I am beginning to notice that most people cannot make a proper distinction between what was or is between what is coming. The movie was defintely its own style with a lot of homage type scenes. But the narrative structure belonged to the director alone. Including the way it was shot. I think the most refreshing thing about Korean films in general is that they are refreshinging. They are new films taking the film process in new directions and it looks to be succeding. I found it quite interesting of note to find that the Korean short film industry is doing incredibly well. Compared to ours which is non existant I think you find more creativity being breed in such a manner.

Guns and Talks is a good example. It is such a movie that decides to go outside the cinema box and break some rules of traditional narative structure. The scene with the naration being interupted by a loss of words. The melodramatic love scene by the younger brother with the two other assassins "crying'. That was brilliant. Because if that had been taken seriously then the movie would have lost a whole lot of credibility in my eye.

For some reason Korean cinema has taken things that are off the wall yet kept them in line enough that the audience doesn't treat it like say a HK film. Walking into the police station was done well considering they answered the question of the audience in "how'd he ever get out of that police station" Answer: "Whenever I tell this story no one ever believes it"

Had time to really think on it and I can really say Korea has some immensely good things going on for cinema. It's like watching a new wave take its place among the mainstream. These films really do have things going for them. Now if damn Americans would get over subtitles they may realize what they are missing.

Another thing that is interesting is that, I could be wrong here, is that with the advent of their own film school over there in S Korea they really have a purer cinematic background then say over here and the directors from Asia who came here to learn due to the fact they don't have the baggage of watching so many American films and the same way they all have been made. Very little has changed in American cinema over the many years and only recently have things been changing. Forgive me if I am giving a free ride to Korea (they have bad movies just like everyone else) but after thinking over the differences and wondering why people like Tony and I are attracted to these films (as one day future directors) I realize they are a refreshing change. I dunno. Maybe I am looking far too much into it. But of course as a person who wants to be a director, the greatness is in the details.
