So what do you do, exactly?

I've seen some similar threads, but never one that just asked the question. So Chewers, how do you pay the rent? What gets the food on the table, the roof over your head? The DVDs on the shelf? (Not necessarily in that order, of course...)

I myself do a whole lot of software development using Java. Currently, I adapt normal web sites to insure that the disabled can properly use them. Money's not as good, but my karma is roaring back after the last couple of years...

I don't work right now (other than doing free websire updating for Fetal & Sci-fighter) but I am currently filling out apps for a simple job to bring a little extra $$ in.

My boyfriend supports us and he is a Senior RMA Specialist.

I am a cyber hermit. I watch the world pass by through digital eyes as strangers pay my rent. Err I mean I leech off my parents since my divorce left me broker than M.C. Hammer after his career ended.

I found out tomorrow if I will be asking people if they want mexi-nuggets with their orders.....

Ahem, sorry. Just watched Sexy Beast.

I support Royal Dutch Shell, along with Bobbin and Timmy. Hell, on the weekends, we're half of the tech support in the Americas. Just six of us against the world.
Well, ok, six of us on the front lines, anyways. But the calls do literally come from all over the world. I hear more bloody accents from Europe, Asia, and Australia (and Cajun) than I do American, I tell you. Sure, you learn tech skills in this job, but what you really take away from it is the ability to translate any accent, anywhere.

I design the posters and brochures that they put up in stores and restaurants telling you:
don't steal... don't do drugs... don't sexually harass your coworker... don't lift heavy shit.
You know...the stuff you throw away?
It exists to cover the company's ass in case of lawsuits.

I monitor servers worldwide for a major chemical company. That's why my butt is on CHUD all day. It is BO-ring and I have two PC's. One to monitor and one to surf!! Pays OK and I can also do a bit of writing.

i'm a freelance digital artist- compositing, rotoscoping, and general visual effects for commercials, industrials, independent and occasionally, student films. meanwhile, i'm stll stuck in college.

I am a tariff author for a major telecommunications firm. All that means is that I write the legal documents that set rates, services, promotional offers, etc.

I also serve as a liason between the telco and the state PUCs (Public Utility Commissions) for the states of Vermont and New Jersey.

It sounds important, but believe me, they pay me entirely too much to do entirely too little.

I write and edit magazines. Currently working on a new PlayStation 2 magazine, a kids activity comic based on Brit TV classic Bagpuss and the UK edition of Starlog's Fantasy Worlds special (with hot new content from some familiar CHUD faces).

Well here is some good news (or bad news depending on how you view it). I finally landed a job. The bad part is I will be working for Taco Hell. The free soda and discount is a trade off for a job in the food industry. I will just be happy when the pay checks start rolling in.

I work at Gamestop, and while I can't say I love it right now (starting out I only get like, 5-10 hours a week) but it's cool to get a 20% discount and 4-day take-home of any new game....

I've been a bum living off of unemployment and a bit of money from freelance webmonkeying for a few months.

Previous to that, I was a webmonkey/copywriter for the interactive dept. of an ad agency.

I'm trying for a writing job now... perhaps tech writing, as that would = mo' money.

Work study in the Anthropology/Sociology Dept at the University of Toledo. It's not a job, It's an excuse to prolong adolescence.

At some point I'll get the degree, Move on to the masters, get the Ph.D. and eventually get tenured at a second rate college, teaching Anthropology to people who couldn't give a rats ass about the evils that follow in the wake of capitalism. I'm planing on fighting the good fight, which means I'll be living off the money that I receive from selling my plasma.

I am unemployed and hoping to God that i get a job soon. If any Chewers can hook another Chewer up with a job in Austin, TX let me know. I am former reporter.

I tried to get on the set of the Texas Chainsaw remake, but the publicity guy was too slow getting back to me. I was gonna give CHUD the scoop, but alas.

anyway, i am looking for a writing gig. Ah, who the hell am i kidding, i am looking for anything that will pay some bills.

so, i spend my days looking for work and doing some writing on my own.

It's so cool that they do it at all, let alone have dedicated teachers for it wink

Casey...you're in Austin. Good luck. You're surrounded by lots of people in the exact same boat. (At least it's a beautiful boat)
Could be worse...you could be in film.
Still...Dallas and Houston have lower bills than Austin, just aren't as nice. Stay away from San Antonio, if you can help it.
