My meager collection is here. My birthday is on the 14th and I anticipate getting money to increase said collection. What are some must buys for any movie buff?

Dude...No collection is complete (or worth a damn) without the Criterion Brazil set.

Obviously it depends on whether or not you like the movie, but here some good DVDs:

Any of the Kevin Smith flicks
Boogie Nights
Fight Club
Edward Scissorhands
Pulp Fiction
Jackie Brown
Seven
The Ultimate Toy Box

Well you seem to be into animation, so I really wouldn't know of too many must haves in that department.
But, 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' might be a good one. Along with say 'Tron' for its early computer animation work. 'Beauty and the Beast' is another well featured animation disc.

Other than that, there are lots of good discs. Especially in Criterion, but by your owning the 'Seven Samurai' you probably already know that. It just depends on your which movies you like. Seven and Fight Club have great 2-disc sets(although the FC set is hard to find). Same with 'Boogie Nights' and 'Magnolia'. The 3-disc 'Black Hawk Down' DVD is loaded with good stuff. T2 - xtreme edition is another good disc if only for the Cameron commentary. True Romance 2-disc set is good too.

Ok before I start listing every movie I can think of, I would say stick mostly to buying the movies you want. Most of them will have good features regardless.

Man, hangovers suck. Thankfully, a nice pickme up of vodka and cranberry has brought me some clarity.

What is presently on my list:
·Spider Man
·Blades I/II
·Ice Age
·Monster’s Inc.
·Star Wars Episode 2 : Attack of the Clones
·Dog Soldiers
·Eight Legged Freaks
·The Sum of All Fears
·Any James Bond or John Wayne Westerns on DVD

If there are any particular editions of these movies that you recommend this would also help.

I suggest picking up the Ghostbusters Special Edition DVD.
Because you don't have it.
And that's a shame.

Well, since as far as I know there are only one version for all the movies you listed, just go the ones you want at the best price. James Bond Movies, Dog Soldiers, and Blade should all be less than $15 at Circuit City or Best Buy. Most JW films will be too. The other films will be about $20, so you won't get as many.

Balm for the soul:

Babette's Feast (you will LOVE this)
The Apostle (Robert Duvall)
The Passion of Joan of Arc
Criterion's Carl Th. Dreyer Collection (or, via VHS, Ordet alone-- Ordet's the one to definitely have)

Capteucalyptus, you would like Antz , I think. My niece has my dvd right now, so I don't have the director in mind, but it is a good animated movie for adults and children. The main characters' voices include Woody Allen, Jennifer Lopez, Sylvester Stallone, and some others I can't think of right now. What happens, briefly, is that social misfit Woody Allen's ant changes the underlying social order of the ant colony with the help of some friends. I thought it was very creative.
