I was in 3 school plays in high school adn desperately wanted to do some acting in college but never did. I love performing and as a result have decided to audition for a local theater's production of Wait Until Dark. No doubt I will get a "bit part" if I get one at all, but do those of you that have "trod the boards" have any advice for me that may up my odds? I already plan on checking out a copy of the script and reading through it to find a character/characters that interest me.

Important to know what form your audition is in: contrasting monologues? Cold readings?

Cold readings.

From their website:

Audition Details

We do not require prepared monologues, headshots or experience. [snip]Auditions generally include a cold reading from the play, so determine ahead of time which roles interest you. The Little Theatre encourages non-traditional casting. All interested persons are urged to audition. Good Luck!

Then know the script. Be familiar with the story-telling, and have a sense of character traits.

But in cold readings, the most important aspect is in linking to the other performer. Acting is in the give-and-take between characters. You can't be good if there isn't any room for the other person in your work -- so, if all you're doing is fumbling about with your eyes on the page, you aren't even taking a swing at the ball. Get lost. Flub the lines -- that doesn't matter. Connect. Connect. Connect.

I have nothing meaningful to add, but there's always this: Don't date the casting director and then cut her feet off with piano wire because your ballet teacher burned your thighs with metal rods.

Yes, do as Blofeld says.

If you happen to be auditioning on stage with the director sitting in the audience, make sure he can hear you. I was heavily into Drama in high school also, and in every production, there were usually 1 or 2 performers that didn't project their voice properly.

To expand slightly on Blo's advice, directors always clamor for "energy, energy, energy". If you've given yourself enough prep time, knowing the script shouldn't be much of a problem, so that'll let you focus on being quick on your feet when doing the cold readings.

There's nothing more irritating than acting with someone that's supposed to interrupt you mid-sentence, and you sorta have to stammer until the other actor catches up to the script.

I hope you kick ass. I also have that longing to get back into it after a fun high school experience. There's no natural high quite like performing to a live crowd.
