Lack of Response on Chud Stories

Thread Starter
I just sent this to Nick. I'm posting it so that all of you know what's going on. I need you guys/gals to all know that I don't usually post on the boards a lot, since I don't usually have very much to say. Anyway, here's what I sent:

Hello Nick:

I'm in a bit of a quandary here, and am not sure how to do this, so I am going to be blunt and illogical, in the hopes that something can be done that will help everyone.

Chud Stories is going to die a slow painful death if something is not done, and done soon.

When I volunteered to be an editor, I thought the job would entail going over stories, helping to make improvements if I found a place for them, sending the finished product to you or your proxy, and seeing people's work up and published. Then, the Lumiere project started, and I thought you were happy with it starting (even if the name wasn't your first choice).

After sending you the first 1/2 dozen or so stories, you told me that you needed them re-formatted. I sent you several formats, and haven't heard anything back. I suggested that you add a couple of sections to the site, so that we could have a place for the Lumiere project, and a place to index articles. You said you would, and haven't.

I now have about 20-30 stories that have been edited and are waiting for a good time to send them to you. But I don't want to send them, because of the original 1/2 dozen, you have posted exactly one. I check the site every single day, and you have added no sections, even though you said you would. I now have 6 - yes 6 different editor/publisher types that would be more than happy to put together the occasional article to help the site out, from the publishing angle. I've figured out another 5 different exercises that the people who are writing would probably love to play with - some of them even more challenging than the 500 word story challenge. I've started aiming at people like Warren Ellis and Laurel Hamilton, trying to angle interviews out of them. But, I don't want to continue because nothing will ever be posted at this rate. Why should I bother? If it isn't going to go up, what is the point of the exercise?

Now then, Creature Corner has Johnny Butane. He gets stuff up, makes things happen, and does it all under your approval. Fetal has Shelby, to make sure that everything gets put up that is supposed to. Both of these people have proxies that can work with them, and I know that they have back up scenarios to make sure that things go up and the sites are maintained.

Right now, Chud Stories has you. Just you. But you have about a bazillion other things going on, and apparently, you either don't really care about the site, or are too busy to do what needs to be done. I'm betting on the latter, as you aren't the type of person to do something you don't care about.

So: How does Chud Stories get a Johnny Butane or Shelby? That way, you are still being the one in charge, since it's your site. But we can get a slightly faster response time, so the writers don't lose heart.

Help. Please.

Claudia T. Smith

I know that a bunch of you probably think I've been slacking off, but I haven't. I've been editing as best as I can, and really have been trying to figure out what I can do to make this the best writing site out there.

Now then, many of you have offered to help in whatever way you can. Thank you. But, I can't accept any help until I have confirmation that we aren't going to die a stagnant death, because it isn't fair to you, the user.

I'm still working on the stories, as I figure that if I do a good job from the edit point, you may be able to use the stories in some other way later. Once they are finished, though, I don't know what to do.

Anyway, there you guys go.

Hastur, I for one have never thought you've simply slacked off. You've done a good job posting and keeping us up to date with what's going on. Hopefully your e-mail will get some kind of response one way or another.

One small question...do yall still accept non-Lumiere stories? Plus, are the stories that were sent in right before Lumiere began still going to be posted? Thanks.
To answer your second question...we still plan to, yes. We plan on publishing everything. The problem is strickly on the presses, so to speak.

Just heard from Butane...he doesn't know what's going on, either, and isn't involved with Creature Features at present, so wasn't involved with the 4 horror stories Nick recently posted. (Just a followup to my previous ramblings)

Claudia, I'm in love with you. You're the best.

Dave put a handful of stories up the other day, and I said how swamped I've been and that I'd be hitting the site as soon as possible.

I'd prefer private emails stay that way, but c'est la vie...

Bottom line: the stories will go up. What an "editor" will do on the site remains to be seen. I have big plans for CHUDSTORIES, but they are not first on the agenda...

...but the site's my baby, and it will be tended to.

Alright, then change it's diaper.

Really starting to stink around here......

Private attempts to contact you were returned with silence, Nick. We're talking months, not just recently.

By the time you tend to it, you'll lose most of your good writers. At the very least, you'll have them not caring anywhere near as much, which ain't good for content.

BackSpace was MY baby on Sci-Fighter, you collapsed it into a site that you've summarily ignored because you don't have time for these big plans you never tell us about. Yes, Sci-Fighter is an apendage on CHUD, so it's your site, but we were running and maintaining independently, and it was working. Now, there's nothing but mails in my inbox from authors wondering what happened to their stories, and because you won't talk to us, we have no fucking idea what to tell them.

Nick, you keep telling us you care deeply about your fans and the Chewers, you warn us not to piss on the boards, and then you piss on us & piss us off, the very people who support you and you claim to care about.
Who the hell do you think you're getting the stories from for your site? The very people you're pissing off.
You may have big plans for the site, and I realize money-making venues come first or there will be no MAIN site or anything else, but you DON'T start something, let people run with it, and then choke the everliving shit out them through negligence and lack of communication.
ESPECIALLY if what you need from people are creativity.
Other people besides us have tried to help on this site, Nick, and you've told them you lack the time to accept their help. If you can't afford the time to help them lighten your load, how the fuck are you supposed to have time to even remotely give respect to the people who provide the content for the site?
You've already lost mine. Look at my member number, Nick. This is a guy who's been one of your staunchest supporters who's not a member of your inner circle, who you've gone out of your way to bring back when I gave up on the boards, who's promoted the hell out of your site, yadda yadda. And your attitude has caused me to lose any respect for you I had left. It's been a year long process, to be sure, but when it extends beyond the me to the folks I was trying to help, some of which are here because I told them about this place...I'm just sick of it, Nick.

Oh, and "What an "editor" will do on the site remains to be seen."...how does this jive with the conversation we had when you refered to Hastur as "She's in charge."?

It's really hard to piss me off. Until now, the only one on the boards who has done that was Will, and that was due to a misunderstanding that spun wildly out of control.
You're gone far, far past Will. Will just offended me. You've...fuck, you let me and everyone else down. Sorry, man, you may not think it was important, but we did. And you don't care that we did. We get a snibbet of a line saying you've been busy. Well, see above...don't start something you can't tend to. We don't deserve to be ignored, Nick. We fucking don't.

You have no idea how wrong you are. Thanks for showing your ass to me, though.

There is a reason to all of this. As far as email go, I don't remember anything recent other than Claudia's. Also, I don't see you IMing me much.

Anyway, I've gotten ONE story sent to me in the proper format. LAST CALL. It went up quick. The rest are not in the proper format.

Michael, my number is 770-777-4895. Call me tonight and we'll straighten this out. I'll be busy doing all of the important stuff I do that's of no particular significance in the meantime.

What format was the one that worked? Where is it? Maybe I'm blind, but I didn't see it. I'm probably blind.

As for an editor: an editor edits. That's what we do. We look for things like sentence structure and word choice. We note things like continuity in a story so that the guy is wearing the same shirt from scene to scene. We look at the ebb and flow of a story. An editor tries to make a story a little - well better is the wrong word, because the story is what it is. Maybe stronger. Editors edit so the punch in the story hits you two inches behind your eyes, rather than a quarter inch in front of your nose.

This speaks volumes for a story I was going to send to chudstories.

Now I may re-consider my efforts and publish them elsewhere.
Of course it took six months to get a response back from the last story I published.

Read the good news thread.

And know this: My own primary rule is that I will NEVER change a story without permission. I know that many editors do, but not me. Ask anyone who has been sending them in. I refuse to do anything to actually change a story.

On the other hand, spelling, watching for grammatical errors (within context), small continuity, etc. are things that I will tell the author I saw. For example, if the main character has a red shirt in the first paragraph, and a blue one in the second, and the story doesn't seem to make that a "valid" change, then I will let the author know what I found. I won't change it unless they want me to, but I will let them know what I found.

That would be one of the gentlemen previously mentioned who was supposed to be posting on BackSpace on the Sci-Fighter.
Unfortunately, since he didn't say which story it was, I'm not sure which one to not post, now that we're moving forward.
Said story wasn't really cyberpunk, so it was the last one that was supposed to go up, as a bridge to the next set of stories. Since only 2 of 5 cyberpunk stories actually went up before everything came to a halt, it was one of the ones mentioned above (in a rant, before I actually managed to get ahold of Nick in Real Life, Real Time) of having told people the story was going up, twice, and nothing happened (once due the sudden appearance of CHUD Stories, once due to a sudden, grinding halt on the site.)

"Moving Forward" has more Devo-ish connotations over here. Middle management over here tends to be scared of Devo, so they use phrases like "I want to dialogue with you," instead.

If you guys have a problem, or a story is MIA from here on...

Do not post in this thread your gripes.

In fact, this forum is for discussion of CHUDSTORIES. Any concenrs or queries should be handled via email.

nick@chud.com
dave@chud.com

Email us and things will get fixed or you'll find out what the holdup.

Only if you're not one.

Actually, Trogger, your story should be resent to Nick (and sent to Dave for the first time) tonight, unless Hastur has after-work plans I don't know about or objects for some strange reason. She's already been sent a letter requesting the 3 stories that didn't make it be resent (yes, I live with her, but sinus infections suck & I don't trust myself at present to remember to tell her as soon as she gets home).
In other words, you don't have to send Nick an email, unless you want to of course.

As for Devo...remember the song "Whip It?"
