Working With Friends

Ok so im gonna kinda play the deivls advocate here.
When ur getting everything prepped for ur latest movie and due to budget u r restricted in who u can employ most will use their friends.

My question is has anyone had a problem with this, have they thought you were too bossy or were they lacking in focus to get the job done (costing money and time)?
Have youkept someone in your movie even though they really sucked at acting just because they were your friend?

But thats still better than not getting ur movie made me old china.

I personally like working with friends, i think as long as you lay some ground rules it should run pretty smoothly.

"Don't Worry..." was all shot using friends. The next one will be as well. You should have fun doing your own stuff and having friends around to share in the experience makes it more fun. Yes, there should be some rules, but having fun with it is the main reason to do your own stuff, otherwise it is too much like work.

Having only made a few no-budget student films I know what you are talking about. This has happened to me once so far. I had a friend who offered to be in my student film but after the first day I really did not want him to be in my short. I kept him in though because it would just cost too much to throw away the first days worth of film and get someone else to star and then go out an buy more film.

I know, it can be hard because when u say ur going to make a movie the world and his wife suddenly emerge and offer their services.
This is nice but sometimes u have the 'wedding guest' problem where u only have a certain amount of parts and too many friends to fill them.
Granted this is a better position to be in than not having enough but it can cause a strain if u have some good mates who cant act for shit.

And Bill thats absolutely it, if it aint fun then whats the point.
I enjoy working with friends because of all the reasons u stated, and its a nice feeling when u sit down as a group, even for the rushes, to see how its turning out.
Wouldnt mind working with Chris Lee though. wink
