Directors to Actors and vice versa

If your a Director, how do u get the most from your actors?
If your an actor, which way do u respond to best, the softly softly approach or the 'hands on' vociferous kind?

Me when im directing i tend to treat each actor differently.
If they are fairly experienced then i tend to watch them do a scene as they want to try it, then if i want a different angle to it i'll ask them to try it my way.
But some young inexperienced actors need a bit more of a firmer hand.
When im acting i dont mind if the director getys vocal, as long as i feel they know what they are doing.
Hows everyone else feel?

I think as a director, you do best if you are firm with what you want but at the same time leave room open to interpretation. So if there are some things you really need the actors to do you stick to it but let them decide on some other things. As an actor I have often found that my directors got the best results out of me when they praised me a bit but still kept me focused so I wouldnt get carried away. In general the best thing to go for is a light touch, dont be too firm and dont be a pushover.

Ahh i must revive this in light of the recent dicussion about this. This is exactly why you should taking acting lessons as a director. It helps you see what you can get out of an actor, and really puts you in their place. Lemme see if i can find it in my book here, i just read about this a little while ago...Here we go, it helps you evaluate an actors skills. This is why they use casting directors. Someone who knows what to look for in an actor. Although the director has final cut on all actors, casting directors or someone who knows acting, can help evaluate an actors performance. Pretty good reason to at least know something about acting. Really helps you get a feel for people performance.

I also find that if you beat your actors early on that the threat of physical violence makes them give you what you want much easier down the line. Fear does a lot to get them to toe the line.

Argento fan Sean?

Cuz thats very much his style. I kind like Starving Dogs approach. Think a swift kick in the ass will do the trick?
