Some Advice

Does anyone know anything about, or have any experience with foriegn distribution? Is it possible to get your low budget horror film straight to video in places like Japan or Germany? How hard is this to do? I know you usually sell your american distribution rights for seven years, but that really leaves the rest of the world to explore distribution possibilities. Any horror producers or directors please help me out here. Or maybe direct me to somebody who might know what to tell me.

The only advice I can give you is:

NEVER HIRE A DANCER (EXOTIC OR OTHERWISE, BUT ESPECIALLY BALLET) FOR ANYTHING, ESPECIALLY A MAIN ROLE.

NEVER.

Haha. Shit. I'm currently looking for an actress for one of the main characters, and she has a nude scene. It's actually a pretty good role, and she survives most of the film. I'm finding it pretty hard to cast though. Every other role was a breeze. I'm almost at that point where I'm about to just go ahead and cast a dancer, but the problem is the character is actually well written, and she's in alot of scenes. Maybe I jinxed myself. The search continues though...and the shooting date draws near. Somtimes being a producer can be a real hassle.

This is just from my own experience here, but I have only two words for you:

BODY DOUBLE

Do NOT allow a dancer to play the entire film unless she has the chops to do so. It will wreck a whole lot more than her scenes. I would advise you to just shoot her nude scenes in cutaway, cut to the double, then back. It's not worth the hassle, especially since you need her to ACT for most of the film.

Or if you actually get a good actress who agrees to the nudity, shoot the nude scenes first. Then you won't be giving her a chance to back out later, after you've spent money shooting her in other scenes.

Lloyd Kaufman of Troma learned this the hard way.

As for foreign distribution, there are events where distributors get together and you can pitch your movies to them. Unfortunately, I've never had reason to attend anything like this, so I don't no more. You might want to try the message boards over at www.indieclub.com

Actually, I think Kaufman talked about foreign distribution in his book, too. Why do you think Troma goes to Cannes every year?

Thank you sir. I am definitly heeding your advice when it comes to shooting the nude scenes first. Release forms will be included as well. I read the Loyd Kaufman book a long time ago, before I even considered producing seriously. Maybe I should revisit it. The indie club site is down.

I just came from posting messages over at Indieclub. The trick is you have to sign up for a membership (free) before you can post on their message boards.
