Digital video VS. Hi Definition video

Does anyone know where I can get more information on Digital video cameras compared to Hi-def video cameras?

I am planning to buy a camera so I can start making small/short films, but I want to know overall the highs and lows of both mediums.

Is there a particular issue of Indie Slate or a web site that gives this info. It's not so much that I want speciic models compared, but digital cameras and hi-def video cameras in general.

Also, I'll take any advice from anyone who has seriously experemented with both mediums.

High-Def cameras have about...I think it's six times the resolution of regular DV cameras. That's why they can be used for shooting major-budget movies, while regular DV isn't considered good enough quality.

And if you want to buy, a really high-end DV camera might cost you around four grand. The high-def should run right around two hundred thousand.

I'm not sure where there's a resource for that sort of info but I do know a little from film shool and just experience.

What's your budget like? I'm going to assume that Hi-Def is out of the question unless you rob a bank or something. You've gotta look at how many CCDs there are in the camera. CCDs are small chips where color information passes through from the lens to the camera itself. Basically, the more CCDs, the better.

I bought a Sony MiniDV Handycam w/ 1 CCD about a year ago and it retailed for over a grand but found it on the net for under 850 bucks. Resolution and clarity is obviously superior to analog but color is still kinda drab. It still looks a bit home-movieish. I use 3 CCD cameras at work and color reproduction is vastly improved but you're looking at about 3 to 4 grand.

IMO, stick with either Sony or Canon regardless of whether you go with the lower end camcorders or the higher end ones. For beginners, I do recommend the cheaper Sony 1 CCD camcorders. If you got the cash though, go with the Canon XL-1S.

Hope that helps.
