Writing situations

How kind of stuff do you guys have going on when your in the middle of writing. Being the beginning writer that I am, I'm feeling kind of torn. I think listening to music can be good for inspirational purposes, but can also be distracting. I think TV is way to distracting but I have one in the same room as my computer so it's hard to keep it off. I also like writing with somone else in the room (I get so lonely). But then I end up just talking to much and not getting anything done.

So what do you guys do?

Thats the thing, for me, i have to set aside time to write.
I will have music on in the b.g, it will be low and will also be dictated by what im writing at the time, so normally Maiden or any metal for horror.
IMO if you want to write u have to rid yourself of anything that you know will be a distraction.
If you get lonely then write for say 15-30 mins then go and have a coffee and a chinwag for 15mins.

My wife and I write together, so it's like a constant dialogue. I doubt I'd be able to do it any other way. But if it helps, I find that in my regular job I get alot more done if I'm listening to music. If I don't have the music to focus me, I end up posting on CHUD every 5 minutes, and not getting a damn thing done.

listening to music... nothing i know too well, though, otherwise i sing along... unless it's a score from a film or classical.

I use music if I can. Spurs me on more than distracts. No TV, though. That's too much. No food. Maybe snacks, candy, a drink (prefer to be drinking, though).

Action - Fast rock, sometimes trance
Tender moments - Radiohead, Kristofer Astrom and the like
Horror - maybe Led Zepplin, usually a score (House on Haunted Hill, the Alien saga, The Evil Dead trilogy, etc)

Usually just go by the moment, dude.

I force myself into my bedroom and listen to music. Usually softer stuff like Lord of the Rings soundtrack or Danny Elfman stuff. But then again I also listen to Metallica and Slayer when I write, so go figure.

I also read a few magazines before I sit down and write so I stir up different ideas in my story. For example, I had a character who was nothing more than a supporting character. He didn't really do a whole lot for the story, but at the same time I wanted to keep him in it, so after reading I got the idea to give him a disability like fear of water, so he stunk like shit all of the time because he refused to take showers. Nothing to really drive the story, but it made for a rememberalbe character.

I am not much of a writer but whenever I make an attempt its important that there are no distractions around and no excuse for me to get up and do something else. I have to have a glass of water beside me and my pencils have to be sharpened and my room has to be clean and I have to have extra pens and there can't be any music or TV or anything that could distract me. I think I might have a short attention span, or I am just extremely undisciplined and fidgety and unwilling to sit through writers block. Anyways, for me to get any writing done I have to be alone and bored with no way of entertaining myself. Damn TV, destroyed my ability to...uhhhh...

There ALWAYS has to be music. Whether it be on the TV, or from the comp, music needs to be there.

The right kind of music can always be inspirational.

For me it all depends on the type of scene I’m trying to write. But if I find myself torn with the music and with personal company present, then I will at some time during the day grab pencil and paper and walk to the park.

There’s nothing like the fresh open air that feeds your brain with thought provoking energy. …

Right now I am writing with PT Anderson's commentary from Boogie Nights playing softly in the background. I used to smoke or drink while I was writing but I quit smoking and have almost quit drinking.

I was listening to the Christopher McQuarrie commentary on Way of The Gun the other day and he said something very interesting. He said when he was writing the script all he listened to was neo-classical music, he said it was very hypnotic.

This got me thinking that maybe I should try that. I never thought about it but the kind of music I listen to when I write could be very distracting. And all my scenes seem to be written for various Velvet Underground songs.

So does anyone know some good Neo-classical stuff?

I can't wait for spring break so I can write! (I don't think anyone has ever uttered those words...ever.

I am making two little movies over spring break. Nothing special mostly just for the fun of doing them. Any movie I make is usually just for the fun of it or practice with the camera and stuff. We just think of a good plot and improv the lines. Since I got a boyfriend who has iMovie my films have improved quite a bit though. Anyways back on topic, my next film is going to be the first that has scripted parts, not all of it but there will be some important conversations that will be scripted. I find that writing late at night when I am extremely tired really helps, I come up with wierd stuff and it ends up making sense in the morning.

Cool stuff Gurl. Maybe you could try to post them on here when there done.

I think your movies will fall in the 1% of movies beng filmed over spring break that won't have boobies...or will they?

I will be taking my camera to Vegas with me over Spring Break. I guess that puts me in the other 99%. wink

I usually sit in my quiet and cluttered computer room with only the sounds of humming computers and the gentle swishing og the ceiling fan. I get easily distracted.

I usually write with music playing. Usually music with no lyrics because they distract me. And I do it late at night, like after midnight.

But I am very very easily distracted. For example right now, instead of writing, I am posting to a message board about things that distract me from writing.

I don't think there will be any boobies in my movies. Sorry. I don't know if I could post any of my films, I am not sure if I am not sure I have the knowledge or equipment, besides even if I could they are just really experimental, nothing that is actually fit to be seen by the public.

Music, I need music. Lyrics don't bother me unless I don't know them then I have to memorize them and I get distracted but as long as I know the lyrics they're fine. Classical is great or a soundtrack like Last Temptation of Christ or something similarly peaceful.

Public places are good too like the cafe in Borders Books. Sometimes watching people or real-life situations can be inspiring to me.

I love listening to music when I'm writing, it can be almost anything in terms of tone, but it ALWAYS has to be the same pieces of music, in their correct sequence. On my last screenplay, it was Joe Jackson's Night and Day II followed by the Pink Floyd Echoes collection. The current script is still establishing a pattern for itself, but it's leaning towards Beck's Sea Change and Julee Cruise's The Voice of Love.

I'm going to be writing multiple scripts soon, and I think I'd like to do it like Cameron did it when he was writing his version of Rambo, Aliens and The Terminator all at once, just have a different playlist to slap on to get you in the frame of mind for each piece. That seems a very logical way to go.

That was one of the funniest damn things I've ever read!

I'm not one of those pricks. I take a seat and kick back for an hour or so but I generally buy a book or magazine or something when I leave.

When that comic comes out let me know man!!!

I think it's much different here in Chi-Town. People don't do it to be cool. It's just a different setting and it's pretty relaxing. Plus it's a great place to meet people and especially women.

Why not do an indie rip-off of Clerks set in a book store cafe?

utter and complete silence...

Not true! I just farted!

You would be escorted out pretty damned quickly.
If you attempted to shoot a movie inside a retail establishment, you and your equipment would be escorted out the door rather quickly.

I'm sure in california guys with cameras are a dime a dozen. I think if you tried here in Chi-Town you'd probably get permission easily. Not that you want to come to Chicago I'm just saying!
