Blue Screen - Digital Effects Programs

The video I'm working on calls for a Nitrous Oxide induced hallucination sequence. We COULD do it without blue screen, but having that capability would be simpler and more effective. I'm not sure if Adobe After Effects can do this - if it does, I'm gonna have to get a hold of that(probably on Grokster, unfortunately). If there are any other better, or more appropriate programs I should use, and anything else I should know about this effect, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know.

Okay, I downloaded After Effects and have goofed around with it a bit, but cannot find a way to do bluescreening yet.

I went online and found some tutorial sites, and there was lots of good information there, but no bluescreening.

Could anyone help me or point me to a site that can?

blue and green screening is refered to as keying. The keys for keying is under the effects pull down. I learned how to do it from a book. Trish and Chris Meyer write the best tutorial books you can find on After Effects. I would strongly suggest you buy "Creating Motion Graphics With After Effects" by them. It is invaluable and you will learn how to do so much with the program to make your movies look better. It is $50, but it is well worth the money. If you want to use After Effects to make movies in the future (and you should) get this book.

For now, here is a web site I found with a quick how-to for keying

http://www.darkskies.info/key.html

And make sure nothing the actor/actors are wearing matches the blue or green in any way or it will cause problems.

to add to what Starving Dogs said-

lighting is crucial when you are photographing the blue screen element. make sure that the entirety of the blue screen is lit in a uniform fashion. when you get into after effects, you'll have trouble if you have to key six different shades of blue. its also easier if you're shooting something in which you can crop around the actor so that there is less to be keyed.

another helpful tool is adjust> brightness and contrast. it'll help you get that more uniform blue to key. after keying it, and compositing both blue screen and background elements, use the brightness/contrast adjuster again to blend the lighting of the two elements.

if you can download the CineLook plug-in, you'll give your digital video a nice film stock gleam.
