A PS2 or Xbox for playing DVDs.

Up-yours movie web site man! (There is a winky up there for you people who think I would actually be insulting our webmaster)

Mine:

My comp: 18 inch viewable monitor

PowerDvd

5.1 Dolby Digital THX certified Altec Lansing ADA 995(wattage unknown)

Actually the sound system itself is incredible...bass....wow!

Then for the 36 inch Mitsubishi I have a pretty basic 5.1 JVC Home Theater system.

Decent sound with DTS but the woofers sucks muchos @$$

A note on the speakers: They are TINY little things! When I saw them at the Sony Store, I thought they would sound like crap. But the salesman assured me that they were a hundred watts apiece (center is 120), and that they would produce a nice, rich sound. He was right! Just beautiful.

All in all, this is a pretty inexpensive system - the TV was around $1300, the receiver $270, the player (at the time) $250, and the speakers $150. I put this whole system together piece by piece, over a period of about a year. The sound system shakes the house, and the TV puts out really pretty pictures. Definitely recommended for those on a budget.

I lose:

27 in Sony WEGA

Sony TiVO

Panasonic DVD player (extremely average in all respects, has no zoom or other fun features, but does the job)

Aiwa A/V receiver (300 or 350 Watt, I think. DTS/5.1 decoder built in. I don't like it very much, for mostly ergonomic and aesthetic reasons.)

Denon 5-CD canger (this thing's well over 12 years old and needs replacement soon)

2 PSB 300 speakers (I LOVE PSB Speakers, but they don't make this model anymore. They put out a lot of punch and clarity for their size, and I just really, really like the sound they produce. With a little creative wife-fu, I will eventually finish out my system with all PSB stuff!)

Yep. Two speakers only. The receiver does a downmix to two channels, but it still causes dialogue (or other random tracks) to fade to the back of the mix sometimes. I need a center channel badly.

Pioneer Elite 5-disc Progressive-scan DVD player - DV-C36

Mitsubishi Platinum-series 46" Widescreen projection HDTV - WT-46809

Sony HiFi Digital Cinema Receiver - STR-DE985/B

DB Dynamics Yellow cone Center and Front Tower Speakers with passive 10" subs in each. - can't remember the model numbers

Sony Front channel tower speakers acting as rear surround speakers

Sony Playstation 2 with component video and optical audio

My DVD List - This is lacking about 20 that I haven't inventoried yet. (I'm lazy)

Everything's hooked up with Monster brand cables except the rear speakers. The TV and PS2 are audio linked with fibre optic. The DVD, PS2 and TV are all hooked up via component cables for video.

All in all, not a bad setup since my living room is extremely dark anyway (it's wood-paneled walls and a large rock fireplace). Though, not as big as I need for optimal viewing and sound acoustics, it still sounds and looks amazing when a good movie's playing, not to mention football.

The only thing I need now is a decent sub. I haven't bought one yet because up until April of this year I was living in an apartment, and it would have been wasted.

Anyone ever in Tulsa, let me know, I'm always willing to host people for a couple of movies.

---- UPDATED 08/09/03

I now added an XBox connected via component cables and optical audio.

Also finally bought an Infinity Entra 2 Subwoofer. 12" Active Sub, connected with Monster active port cables.

One Coax adapter

What I may lack in quality I make up for in quantity. My wife and I have extremly different viewing tastes so I have two setups.

Upstairs

35' Toshiba TV
Pioneer DVD (forget the model number)
Pioneer VSX-D850S Receiver - 110 watts per channel. Dolby 6.1 (has a rear center channel)
KLH Speaker system
Pioneer Laserdisc Player

Downstairs

27' Magnavox TV (well overdue for a replacement)
Pioneer receiver - my old one from upstairs. Does do 100 watts per channel but only Dolby 2.0
Pioneer DV-440 DVD Player
Another old Pioneer Laserdisc player

And since I just finished remodeling the basement I built the speaker system into the ceiling and walls.

Sony WEGA 36"TV
Sony DA555ES Receiver
B&W 602 S2 fronts
CC6 S2 center
601 S2 surround
Velodyne CT-150 15" subwoofer
Monster Cable & wire for all the hook ups.

I highly recommend the Velodyne if you like action movies. It was the best sub I auditioned under $1000 in my opinion.

Wow. I held off posting in this thread for fear my set-up would be dwarfed by a parade of plasma screens and precision placed cinema-quality speakers.

TV: 32" JVC Widescreen with NICAM Stereo
DVD: JVC XV515 (All Region) with DTS
Speakers: Altec Lansing XA3051 5.1 100 Watts surround (although I need to adjust the placement of the rear speakers for maximum effect - I have a weird shaped lounge)

And Buttercup - I don't know what the fuck any of that means, I just copied it off the box. Sounds impressive though.

Oh yeah, and in my den I've got a bog-standard TV with PS2, GameCube and Dreamcast, plus a sub-woofer and additional stereo speakers. But I've only used the PS2 to watch DVDs twice.

My speakers would be placed perfectly were it not for the fact that my room has six freakin corners.

* RoCo "Invisible" light-wire (not impressive, but...)
* Universal 882 plugged in on the USB port, (DESPITE what you think, it works just as good!)

Neighbors don't mind... they just MOVED out instead. Seriously, I couldn't even watch something loud like... Armageddon without getting a note on my car!

The entire system (except the Playstation) was assembled from mid-label parts, done as a custom job by a local electronics store, paid for entirely by winnings in a "Superbowl Challenge" last year. Walked in the store, looked around. Entered contest. Walked out and three weeks later. BAM! Delivery guys lugging it up the steps to my apt.!

Well I have a total of 5 component sources (6 soon - PC). I have electronic switching between DVD and HDTV through my Integra receiver (50Mhz).

For the video games, I ripped apart a manual A/V switcher and used that. As its mechanical bandwidth is moot. Any signal degradation I can deal with as video games are aliased all to hell anyways. But, I can tell no difference between my setup and plugging the source directly to the TV.

The videogame center is pretty cool, I built it myself and fits perfectly the consoles. The top of the table has a hole where the GC is. Nifty. I'll try to take a pic sometime.
