Progressive Scan DVD Players

Thread Starter
I'm getting ready to jump to a progressive scan player with good cables. I have a 55" Mitsubish Medallion series widescreen TV. Does anyone have any recommendations?

What should I look for? What should I avoid?

Pioneer Elite Series.

Check these models, and don't spend under $400: <a href="http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/Pioneer/CDA/HomeProducts/HomeAlbum/0,1420,50~5020~5020200,00.html" target="_blank">DV-C36 or DV-45A</a>

I personally have the DV-C36, which is a 5-disc, and it kicks major ass. Mine cost me about $450 at Ultimate Electronics, on sale. They didn't have the 45A, so I couldn't compare actual retail cost.

Adopt me.

Seriously, the Toshiba SD3750 is a great, inexpensive ($180 or less) progressive scan DVD player with optical and coax digital audio (analog too), component, composit and s-video outputs. It plays mp3 (but not very well), DVD-R, CD-R, CD-RW and VCD too.

The only problem I have with it is that it isn't very attractive to look at. But it's definately a good buy.

I'd also recommend spending extra on the component cables, Monster being my choice. You'll notice a difference on a screen that big.

Panasonic's new line. Plus they have a DVD recorder out now.

They're slim and super sexy. Yeah baby! wink

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I was planning to spend around $200. I'm just curious as to why Kid Ego would advise not to spend less than $400. Can you give me further explanation.

Maybe there is something I don't understand about the different players.

Do progressive scan DVD players work with just any TV, or do you need to be in the HD capable realm?

I ask because I was looking at the Toshiba 32AF42 after reading another thread in this forum and noticed in an online review: "Being an analog set, the 32AF42 will not display progressive-scan DVD or HDTV, but it will still produce a good analog picture with standard-TV- and component-video-equipped DVD players."

So what are the requirements for getting the most out of a progressive scan DVD player?

You need HDTV to get the effect of a progressive scan television. I'm not sure why exactly, but that's what I've read.
